Is he using high voltage low amps and low voltage high amps on one coil (two windings), before magnet is at TDC HV and then at TDC he switches the coil to LV ?

Hi folks, Hi gyula, I don't seem to recall much if any heat last time i used a setup like this with bolts, though I'll definitely check and let you know once I get these 4 other coils finished and the drive motor setup.
I know what you are saying about the eddy currents, though I think with all same magnet polarities out on a rotor, it is not as significant, since hysteresis is less because of that also.
Though sometimes I get the feeling that in typical motors, they use such a small amount of copper for the coils, that much of the heat actually comes from the coils being pushed into releasing more heat than magnetic field by using too many amps.
Joseph Newman explains this observation about copper pretty well, if you exceed a certain input threshold for a given amount of copper, all you get is a higher ratio of heat instead of a magnetic field.

Do your home works before you buy, there are thousands of theses on the market in all dimensions and current ratings. They are so cheap with speed controllers and every thing. All you really need is a PWM servo controller.
They can do speeds we do not need for our research. The motor are deigned to make a model Plane fly. They have enormous horse power and will pull large currents while doing this.
We do not need them to do that. I was able to throttle my motor back to 4500 RPM and pull 1.2 amps to do it. Sure it will pull 8 amps at 9000 RPM but they can be made to work very efficiently for our application.

If you buy the right one for you needs they can be very useful I am so surprised they have not been used before for OU.

some of the people modify them for electric scooters with hall sensors , and some are really big ones with huge amp draws , best is to get a controller for them..

I can see those bolts you use for fixing the coils in place on the stator and always wonder how much eddy current losses they may involve? Have you thought of that or have some info whether the bolts get warm when the rotor magnets pass by and cause induction in them?
Maybe this loss is not significant, I never used bolts as cores (I understand you are happy with them, solving securely the holding of the coils in place with them). If you wish to test this for eddy losses then you may wish to check the bolts temperature when all of them are in place and you use an outside prime mover for speeding up the rotor. Just run the rotor for a minute or two and do not load any of the coils, then stop the rotor and touch the bolt heads with your finger how warm they are if any. Hopefully they will not be warm...

Really thanks for that! It makes sense. The forest being a whole organism. Rod i found some shaft couplers that will do for me with the motor i found on ebay, i can't wait to try this, but i would still like to see your pictures if it's not too much trouble
