    Testing with my fan...

    I have been testing with a regulator that Lidmotor recommended, and I love it with the bedini fan!

    I have been running for 3 days 24/7 now primary battery started at 12.22, it is now at 12.06 V. I am drawing 10 V at 200 MA and I have charged up 4 9V batteries and 2 AA, and 2 AAA, and now charging a Race car battery of 9V.

    What I love about this is I charged the primary battery with solar cells and it should only take me a day or two with the 5 Watt cell to recharge the primary battery to 12.32V ( yes it does not put the battery to the full 14.0 v it can do, but... At least I don't need a regulator.

    Now something I have tried and works well is I put another fan next to the primary fan and it will put out 3.4 V, which is good for charging up AA batteries. So very nice indeed.

    I did try to modify another fan and it broke off on me even after heating it with an hair dryer... I guess you win and loose some.

    I have been tempted to get the 45 W solar cells, but I am thinking that earth batteries would be a much better investment as they are 24/7.

    Because of the hurricane I might be releasing it all earlier than anticipated. As far rewinding alot of people have rewound them and most of the magnetic structures are in an arrangement of cw,ccw,cw,ccw on the four post poles and use dual wires and try and get as many windings on it per pole, Def look back at previous post in this thread, we covered alot of detail in rewinding. Dont give up. As I said before i used pliers on a few of the stators and as careful as i was the laminates separated just a little bit, i squeezed them back together and it ran fine.

    I've managed to somehow ruin another fan with a big stroke of stupidity. unless the simple charger comes out soon, I'm going to try winding my own out of salvaged wire and stator base. At least I got both of the fans for free.

    the neon is merely a saftey device for the transistor, i have ran ne2's which start to fire at 60 volts and go all the way up to 120volts. The 220 volt would probably work as a protection gas tube but not light. Unless you put 24 to 36 volts into the fan (yes, ive popped 36 volts into my fan with a variable power supply, it does not hurt them, at least the ones i used).

    As far as measuring the output voltage it can only be done with a scope, its so fast. But you can put a volt meter on the charge battery and see where the charge voltage is going. Ive taken most all the batteries over voltage with no damage. But if you really want to analyze the output you have to put it in a scope and remember the voltage sometimes goes over 100 volts, so keep that mind when using your probe selection.

    Ps - The neons will not light when you have the charge battery on them.

    I currently do not have a scope but further back in the thread you will see some have posted their scope observations. So you can see there are quite a few large spikes with these fans. I am hoping to get a scope soon, as soon as i find one that is within the price range

    How I can make it work better?

    Hello Imhotep.
    I tried to duplicate your charger,but the best result I got is the fan running and 3V as output.As transistor I used a TIP31; IN4007 as diodes,a 2,2K carbon variable resistor;two 9V rechargeable batteries.The neon doesnt glow,probably because is rated 220V(it come come from a phasefinder screwdriver).The renmant is equal to your circuit.Please let me know how I can improve my device.

    when discharging caps always use a large watt resistor at 10-50 ohms maybe 10 or 15 watts (using the amp measuring section of your meter can vaporize the copper traces inside. you can try measuring a load and see the current draw ,if you get no reading you might have taken out the fuse or traces opened up . look at protection fuse if it is used in your meter . i sparked a cap to show the large and quick charging of a cap with this fan.) there should be a diode off the collector, that is the charge diode(anode goes to collector cathode goes to + of charge battery . the neon will come on when the charge battery is disconnected . if you get no neon indication when charge batt is disconnected,try adjusting potentiometer .

    Ok back to the forum someone mentioned using ATX power supplies as the source (). Read the instructions and built one out of the spare ones I had, also added the variable power regulator circuit.

    Third fan was a Jamicon JF 0825S. Had to melt a post into plastic. Alot quicker to setup (due to practice) Also noticed it was the same brand Imhotep had in one of the videos. This fan ran faster than the second one so will use that mainly. (Will do more tests to find out which one is more efficient).

    With the ATX power supply first thing was to charge up all my AAA, AA, 9V, 12V batteries I'd been using (Alkaline, NiMh, Lead). One AAA that read 0v and looked like it had leaked a bit got thrown.

    Also found a 50v 2200uF capacitor at the recycling center, (about 50mm L by 25mm). Not keen on getting zapped so I put that on the back burner till I charged up all the batteries.

    Couldn't stop looking at the 50v capacitor so very carefully set up so I could meter voltage and stuck on the circuit.

    Here's the results.

    In:

    21.4V 0.0275A 0.5885W <30 Seconds

    Out:

    47V 0.79A 37.13W <1 Second

    Not sure this is how to test a capacitor. I brought the capacitor up to 47v (rated 50v). Took less than 30 Secs. I put the Meter on 10 Amps, it flashed 0.79A briefly (< 1 Second). Tested Volts and it read 0.

    Questions?

    Very curious to see what the best way of testing efficiency is?
    Is it ok to add a Diode between the Collector and the Charging Battery +?


    Will do more testing over the coming months, this is very addictive.

    theremart got close to 100 volt pulses out of his fan ,i am not sure what freq. it was at ,each fan will have different outputs and as you change the input volts it will change the output spikes ,some i ran on pwr supp 24 -36 volts much bigger spikes .i changed from 9 volt zinc carbon to lithium piles to lead acid and some times to de-sulfate i ran numerous fans(3) at 36 volts to speed the process.most fans are very tolerant on changing the input voltage .also i rewound some with my own wire .
