    One capacitor for one circuit. So if I combine two stingo I use two capacitor, if I combine three I use three capacitor, and so on.

    Sorry for the confusion. I use two method for recovery:
    - single diode for max output but at the risk of battery turning into capacitor
    - FWBR version for better battery charge

    The above recovery method apply to any other circuit too, not just stingo. So I usually refer new stingo modification only on the main part, not the recovery. Sorry.

    that the single diode leading to positive of the charge battery, is all that you use? I may have misunderstood you. Many times you have mentioned "I recommend charging with a FWBR". Yet I have never seen one in any of your circuits.

    Also, is the above circuit your more recent, and used... or ?

    You can connect like 7imix mentioned.

    I don't use that kind of FWBR because:
    - I scrap some FWBR component from broken PSU and it block worse than normal black diode. Previous experiment show worse efficiency too.
    - with DC blocking capacitor, the output is about half then if we block only the one from source positive.

    Remove the diode and the charge battery. Place a small dc blocking capacitor where the charge battery was hooked up and connect the other side of the capacitor to the bridge rectifier ~. Connect the other side of the rectifier ~ to where the diode was hooked up.

    Across the top and bottom of the coil is where the high voltage backspike can be seen in a stingo circuit.

    I have seen so many different Stingo circuits, I am utterly confused.

    I have gone through the thread and deduced that the one I wired was much more complicated, and so I have landed on this one:

    Ok, thanks. In that way FWBR version of stingo charge the battery alternately with negative charge right after coil shutted off, and then briefly after that with postive charge. This only theory but I found the battery do behave differently from when I use single diode only.

    I don't use that circuit because it is less efficient and FWBR stingo is good enough. Too many transistor to replace if I mess up too lol. I use it as motor driver now, with bellow configuration to make the motor spin twice faster and consume half of the previous:

    I get good result from normal FWBR version for gel, nicad, nimh and even zinc carbon. I think the difference between using FWBR vs single diode is more important than positive vs negative charge.
    Regarding positive and negative charging what I read is that postive charging is with caps while negative is direct with diodes. I assume that freq wave is the different too.
    That circuit is interesting should try that.

    I think your nicad has become low in capacity, or you use too much power.

    How many is your circuit current consumption? Capacitor would not reduce output power. You need to increase the potentiometer connected to PNP (TIP32C) base.

    For reference, two nicad that measured to has standing voltage of 2.7V usually reach 3.5V when charging. I sometimes let it reach 4V.

    I think reaching 15V is ok. It indicate either:
    - your circuit has low output power but you battery has low capacity
    - your battery is good and your circuit has high output power.


    Measure the output with amp meter in series with the nicad. Make sure it is around battery capacity divided by 20.

    When the battery get hotter than 40 degree or hotter than high fever, stop charging.

    I'm trying to restore some old 14.4v nicad batteries for my cordless drill. I've got a stingo up and running, but the nicad voltage (starting charge 12 volts) shoots past 15 volts within seconds of being hooked up. I tried decreasing the capacitance to limit current some by using .1 uF cap, but the voltage still charged past 15 volts really quickly.
