    Good Evening,

    A 2N108 looks like this. I have built the circuits shown on JB's web pages on a PCB I had made but have only used 2N3906's as the 2N108's were quite expensive.

    I see a few of these links are repeats from post #2844,
    I left them in so they would all be together in one post.

    2N108's were a CBS division part number
    for a bipolar PNP germanium transistor that were
    commonly replacing tubes as the audio output stage
    of portable radios like this.

    The army used this tester to test them,
    the 2N108 is listed in the spec sheet...





    They are so old they were originally packaged with
    inline leads (Right pic below) until the newer style
    triad lead packaging was implemented later (Left pic).

    2N108 Semiconductor (Transistor, diode, IC) Cross reference

    Left = "Triad" (Newer) layout:
    1 = E
    2 = B
    3 = C

    Right = (Older) inline layout.

    Looking at that circuits I noticed that they used TTL chips driven from 5V and that last chip , the 74367, hex bus drivers with very fast rise and fall times in the region of 20 nano seconds. But then again they drive optocouplers with a rise time of about 1 micro sec if I am not mistaken and slow fall times.
    So I think that last chip was just used to give an extra output to also charge the cap that drove the TTL chips and to isolate them from the apparent scaler waves.
    Has anybody tried to build it exactly like in that hand drawing using other pnp transistors

    Yes, I confirmed this with JB. They were used in IBM high speed printers that were made in the late '60s and '70s. They were used to drive the hammers, each printer would have had 60-100 of them.

    And yes, they really are the size of a hockey puck.

    Thats when I started looking and i have been looking and trying to develop a search after those post came out.

    2n108 is not hockey puck but it is the only one I have not been able to find documentation on. The IBM 108's are still around. THe GT108's aren't but I have documentation on them.

    GE108 is short for germanium 108.

    I guess I should get hold of him maybe he'll give some more detail than was in the post.

    Somthing kinda Interesting..

    To step back a little. I have continued to try different things to make a Bill and Ray Scalar charger work. I have tried several older model Germanium transistors in hopes to duplicate some effect with no resolve.

    So I was gonna try to track down the parts list on the schematic and see if it made difference.
    To date the only part I have not been able to get is the 2n108 pnp Germanium transistors.
    I have googled, called, searched documents, looked for old radios and appliances that incorperated the 2n108s, with no success.
    These things have disappeared and just about any documentation on them as well.
    I have looked at other transistors that are "108's" like the BC108 npn. They were NPN so they are even close. I looked at modified variations of the 108 like the 1083a 1081 ect. They either do not work or are not matched in the material. Direct replacement parts do not work. So....

    The manufacturer of the 2n108 was CBS made alot of different transistors that were germanium so I found one that used the same case and germanium chip but it didn't work.

    So while searching google I ran accross this page..

    Not hard thing to find. In the article he discusses the use of the 2n108 and how the efficiency of the radio went up from the use of it compared to to tubes. But he doesn't actually have a radio with the transistors in it just schematic.
    I look for a radio. Contacted several antique networks to see if I could find one. No luck there.

    This is another page I found, no big trick, that shows images of old transistor but of course he is looking for an image of it.
    Mister Transistor's Historic Semiconductors About half way down the page.

    This page I found lists it and has the case and the manufacturer, thats I how I found out the mfg and case number. He also has the direct replacements.
    But nothing else.

    I have been trying to find the record of sale for CBS semiconductor a former subdivision of Columbia broadcasting, so I could further track do the assets. CBS themselves have declined to give the information. I guess like most corporations they don't keep track of the history or don't want to.
    But this is still ongoing.... as well as a couple of other leads I am following

    Now I have looked into other antique transistors that are not mentioned in any FE device and can find alot of info on most of them. A couple I just picked out of the blue cause they were about the same age. I could find all the documents I wanted.

    I finally went out on a real limb and discussed the manufacturing of them with several companies in china that claim to be able to build them if buy a bunch. Most of them had a hard time telling the truth but finally broke down and told me all they have is the specs and they replicate that. They don't have to actual semiconductor makeup. They would do it with germanium but they could do it cheaper with silicon.

    So anyway I would guess that the CBS 2n108 PNP TOP HAT can be added to the list of manufactured Free energy devices that later were found out and suppressed.

    I wonder where Bill and Ray got theirs.

    From looking at the scalar page that Bedini has posted. It looks like at the time he didn't build one. Of course on this thread he said somethings missing.
    On his page he asks...

    What the hell happened to Bill and Ray with this box?
    They had the last parts and some one else most likely wanted them... Maybe??

    In all the movie and talks from JB he say it dont work with a load connected and it is all for testing purpose.

    But in this movie you show that even with a load connected (the lamp) it will charge with 2 coils ?
    Now I suppose that maybe the 10 coiler wil charge better without a load or all the things JB say this becouse he is affraid that somebody is stopping him to sell this idea with the 10 coiler ?

    What bulp you use there ?
    Is it a 12v - 21W or a 12V - 12W lamp ?

    Why I ask is becouse I want to know how much load the 10 coiler can handle.
    if it is a 10W a coil the whole thing can give easy 100W. ?
    ( I hope it is a 21W lamp )

    it is a shame the whole 10 coiler kit cost this much.....
    I realy want to build this thing .............

    Jeff, do you sleep at all? But seriously, this is one great piece of work. I have so much catching up, setting my testing bench in my 18 wheeler cab - which should be fun. Just fired up your pulsinator to see if I didn't messed up anything. It works good, programmed with the last code you gave me. I finally found a source for used LAB's, pretty much any size. I'll try to select a few and plug to D-TS. Next I'll replicate Vissie's design - Thanks Vissie
    I just feel so dumb after being away from experiments. You guys went so far forward in such short time. Anyway, thanks for inspiration and sharing.

    Here's how the relays are configured, but I am in the middle of trying to market the actual swapper so I can't let this one out. Sorry.

    Great vid Bits!

    Thanks for the view of it running. I was originally critical of spending those kinds of funds for the ten-coiler but your work and documentation are starting to make me second guess that stance. Please keep us "in the loop" as you fine tune your setup. It looks great!
