    Fod3180

    To Anoop,

I have had good switching time and full on and off control using the FOD3180 driver chip.

    Hi again UFO,

I've tried what you have suggested: Varying both the gate to source resistance (100K pot) and also the trigger to gate resistance (500 ohm pot, 100 ohm pot). Does not seem to make an improvement.
I am driving a single FET with the coil disconnected and a simple load resistor in place of the coil, for this test. Am not using the heatsink as a bus bar for the Drain connection, but using the drain leg for this test.
Maybe my FET's are not upto specs (?) will try obtaining from different sources and test again.

Meanwhile can anybody suggest any common easily obtainable driver IC's to try? UFO, what do you feel the minimum switching times should be?

In the past I've tried using mechanical relays instead of transistors for faster switching - however the high currents would cause the contacts to stick(!)

    Thanks and regards,

    Anoop

The lower the value of that resistor the higher the switching OFF times...
But you also have a small issue in the Turning On time...needs to go faster...that also gets affected by the resistor that runs from the IC Trigger-Gate...

John, thanks for all the great circuits, and the explanations on driving FETs. I wonder if you could assist just a little more.
I am using two of your driver circuits - the two transistor E1 circuit and the 555 based E3 circuit. I have a function generator for providing my square wave input signal via an optocoupler. I am amplifying and cleaning the signal from the optocoupler before sending it into the driver circuit. Using a scope, I am observing that the switch-on time I am getting on my Mosfet seems good - around 200 Nanoseconds. However the switch-off speed is terrible - around 50 Microseconds. (the spec sheet states the mosfet rise and fall times as aprox 100Ns each way, inclusive of delay time).
I wonder if you could advise on the factors that affect the switch off speed and what I could try to improve this. (just as you explained how the capacitors were important for switch-on speed).
I've looked at the output signal from the driver and the waveform seems good, showing a very sharp on and off. I've also experimented with shorting the FET gate to ground (source), just to see how fast the fet switches off, and even then it still takes around 50 Microseconds. Have tried a couple of different FET's, but same result - (Fast switch on, slow switch off). Searching the net, but nothing yet! Hope you can help, thanks!

    Best wishes

    Hello dear,

    Who are you addressing? ...

I came to know that the problem is in the connection. I would like to suggest you to verify the connections
What connections?, what motors...no motors here... ?

if you have warranty you may take it back to the company so that free servicing can be obtained.
So, take it back to who?...LOL...to UFO?

Sorry but I believe you confused threads...is ok, but please delete message and I will delete mine...

    Thanks

i have a vreg and oscillator on a circuit board and i just need to put together the mosfet section and wind a coil.
its really the final configuration of the resistors you have used between the mosfet and oscilator sections that i'm trying to get.

edit: the overview one with annotations is what i'm after ideally but if you have the oscillator and pwm handy as well i'd be very greatful

    Dear kog,
could you be so kind and post the picture of your happy motor circuit,
which is shown on your video,
I searched the thread but could not find it.
I saw an interesting pattern on your oscilloscope and i would really like to replicate your exact setup.

Thank you all for your contributions.

I may be off the mark here but here is a research link Bruce sent out tonight and I just couldn't help but wonder what your opinion is of the patent. I'm not sure how relevant it is to your work, but if you or anyone else hasn't seen it before, you may find it interesting.

Priest Has Motor Run By 'Ion Energy'

    Antonio d'Angelo -- Inter-Atomic Ion Motor -- NY Times article & US Patent # 2021177

The attractive feature of the cosmic rays is their constancy. They shower down on us throughout the whole 24 hours, and if a power plant is developed to use their power it will not require devices for storing energy as would be necessary with devices using wind, tide or sunlight. All of my investigations seem to point to the conclusion that they are small particles, each carrying so small a charge that we are justified in calling them neutrons. They move with great velocity, exceeding that of light. More than 25 years ago I began my efforts to harness the cosmic rays and I can now state that I have succeeded in operating a motive device by means of them. I will tell you in the most general way, the cosmic ray ionizes the air, setting free many charged ions and electrons. These charges are captured in a condenser [capacitor] which is made to discharge through the circuit of the motor. I have hopes of building my motor on a large scale, but circumstances have not been favorable to carrying out my plan.

    Hello Soundiceuk!

    And thanks!

That Patent sure looks very interesting...D'Angelo shows very clear wiring and windings there, nice graphics for the "Age" of that Patent!...excellent Artist!...Italian of course...LOL

Machines have dual commutator assemblies at different configurations (similar to mines)...However, if you "follow" the wires they leave upper commutator and then "return"to Upper Commutators next element (Lap Symmetrical Wind)...as so it happens the same way at lower commutators...it is a very similar design to the very Old Dynamo-Motor Machines...
Unfortunately...they are still ruled by the Symmetry...

But can not deny the great Magnetic Patterns that would be created by those very different concepts in windings and overlapping between upper-lower crossed coils.

    Thanks for sharing it here!
