Wow!! Looking good lasersaber - you never fail to raise an eyebrow!

Obviously there will be a lot of questions, so let me start the ball rolling....

How long do they stay at roughly that brightness?
Whats your start-up battery?
Could you get it working with any other CFL shape/power rating, or were these the only ones?
Whats your setup?

Take your time - i also have a wife and kids and job to juggle, so when you're ready!

On the flyback oscillator i can line up every CFL lamp i have in series (2 36W, 2 14W, 1 18W etc...) and it WILL work for a few mins without the battery (using the darlington pair tip31C) but nowhere near the brightness you are getting with that string of CFLs. Are they also in series on the output????

Dang Lasersaber . I see you are using two other coils on top of your e core .I cant get it to work with a cap at all . and all the transistors i tested will oscillate without anything connected to the base leg after you trigger it so putting something there is pointless in my case when going over 2 volts ? strange .best results i have had with the fuji mod light still . thanks for keeping me busy . I will probably die before i make your first one and surlely be gone trying to get your "latest" . you have won my heart and officially take the cake for an impossible feat done .


@ Mk1 . Hey ole Friend .Like to see your idea on paper as i got a roll of cotton covered wire and some floral wire and 30+pounds of copper #22 . what about a third wire say aluminium also .

while I'm still trying to figure out heads or tails of why your original build works so well, you are already advancing light years ahead. you deffinately know what is going on w/ this ckt.

Heres where i've got to with this curious thingamijig:

YouTube - 1AA (in phone charger) lights 36W CFL.

The CFL will blink for about 10 mins without the battery if left unmolested.

Same circuit as i left in the post above.

EDIT: just cant get the 2 36W CFLs to light right up - as soon as the flyback starts resonating (radio clicks faster and av plug LED lights near flyback) i know i'll get them both alight.....

the only way i get good output for my setup is when the flyback starts resonating. and thats the only way i get long ''ringing'' effect.

Hi . Well in the real use of a cfl wattage rating it's actually the heater Filiment wattage and nothing to do with the light it produces . We are just lighting them without creating the mercury vapor first with heat. So i don't think you can do a cop calculation on them even thought i have always cried wolf . They are just like us lighting up a hundred watts of luxon leds full bright from a few milliamps . How can you calculate that . One thing is for sure if technology would allow what we know and learned to be put to use it would put a hurt on battery suppliers and power companies . Imagine lighting up that department store with what we already have using no filiments at all . forget the rfi i say they already are baking us with the full spectrum Plus like you say the cfl running on standard Ac current is still oscillating . what they need is to shut the heater off after the bulb lites . Brilliant and simple solution but no they keep that bulb sucking filiment hot all the time .

Hi Albert, thanks for the points . I think I really need to actually build one to understand what's actually going on with these devices -- especially now lasersaber has improved the ringer to such a piont that probably everybody wants to give it a go (plus, as more information will be shared, successful replication would be more likely ). lanenal

I used 68pf in the old mods .I put the cap across the pot and then used the center and outside leg . I used it as a small tank circuit where the bias resistor was. it is a fact that each transformer is a little different even if they are the same version . Some have 6 to 8 turns on the primary on the outside of the little transformers . I have wound more wire around the outside of some of the older ones to increase the out volts .I am ok thanks for asking . each day i wake up in my own bed is a good day

I have tried the 68pf across the outer pot leads and didn't see any noticeable difference in draw/light. Does your tank circuit use a 10k pot? I usually put ~2nf across the bias resistor to reduce mA draw. Maybe I am missing something. All the fuji transformers I get have rock hard epoxy on the primary fixing it to the e-core making it near impossible to alter. Glad you're back fusionchip.

Great new video. Making good useable light is good direction to take this. I'm anxious to see the details on your special transformer.

I have been working on batteries and the Joule Ringer at the same time. The Electronicgoldmine flyback transformer works good but something about this basic circuit idea STILL puzzles me. I made a simple Joule Thief tank circuit to test some of the ideas on. Here is a video of it and just imagine replacing the cap/resistor arrangement with your coil. This should help some of the new people who are struggling with camera circuit and flybacks.
There is really nothing new about the circuit in this video but is was new to me. You should also enjoy looking at these batteries.

John, thank you for describing the Joule Thief circuit very clearly in your YouTube Video and post.

I am intrigued by the motor running from the carbon-magnesium battery. Such a nice build. I guess the coils and the reed-switch are all in series? Do the coils have a core, or are they just "air coils"?

This is the transformer most of us have been anxious to see !
In the meantime I was reading about saturation and reluctance and alot of
things alot of us would get discouraged by the complexity in transformer building so I want to congratulate you on the good work.

I can see that it is possible to get an E core wind it up and that the new transformer will not have the limitations with that of the small fuji transformer.

I have read that in simulation a zener diode acts as CFL but at much higher voltage if someone wanted to derive (back engineer) frequency and voltage for a particular CFL. However the Joule ringer is too exotic for standard simulators. The making and tuning is best follow lasersaber's methods.

Look forward to see more Joule Ringers and the progress. great job

Hiiya!

I was playing around with lasersabres circuit tonight and I don't have all the right parts, and when looking at his diagram in the video, given that it is more of a picture than a schematic, on the transister.. I take it the emitter is going to ground, and the other two... which is the base, and which is the collector? The C5720 and D2504 - are these from the disposable cams?

I couldn't get a MPaA06 to run this circuit, nor a 2222 but I had it (barely) going on C2320 out of an old power amp. My bifilar is a stock Bedini SSG wind, (450?)and my cap is 80v 15000 uF but it's about 20 years old.

I measured about 320v AC on my middle leg (on the side of the transformer that has four legs) and a 15 watt CFL tube lit up dimly, but when I disconnected the battery, she died in about 10 seconds. Mind you I was only running 6v. Did he run 9v?

I didn't have those diodes so I used a 10k variable resistor that seemed to work ok.



Then something went wrong, now I have nothing.

Do these little transformers die easy?

Still trying.

** About 20 minutes after this post I went through my junk circuits, and I actually found a D2504 - from a cam board, plugged it in and the 15 watt bulb went VERY bright (on 6v) then promptly died, and I don't know... maybe blew the transistor?! Wierd.


** Tried several transistors from the camboards themselves, and most worked, bulb lit up nice, but everytime, a few seconds later... poof, game over. Quite strange, I'm pretty sure it's wired right... maybe I've got the wrong cap? hmm i dunno. same end, everytime. Each time I start, I empty the cap first, disconnect the battery, replace the trans, then start over, and when I connect the battery it arcs and sticks a bit... and that's with an emptied cap...
