    Hi NickZ & all,
    Thanks for the links. I've seen cores listed and some do not adhere to the standard we see in this chart. I prefer seeing the "J" & "W" with the permeability ie "W=10,000" listed this way. Let's not forget the "H" @ 15,000. From what I've read the "H" isn't that popular to find and are costly. I'd still like to try one if it's 3X a "J". lol I wish I knew the permeability of many thing I've tried that have worked so well. Finding data on things like a Fuji transformer...pretty slim from what I've found looking. They still amaze me for their size vs output.

    Some places reference permeability using the "AL" number. Like AL is 6.3 permeability? I haven't seen a comparison that appears to be a standard although I'd expect one to exist. Maybe just some simple thing I've missed. If anyone finds or sees the calculation to get from one to the other, I, and I'm sure many would appreciate it.

    Hello Vaporizer.
    Hope you are feeling better.If you have the time can you please buy this coil from BG micro pictured below.When last I looked it was 1.95 each They are 3 inch OD.I have a few of them and they clean up nice I have two that I am testing JT's on but can only do voltage tests and I thought since you had a scope you could run some tests and tell me how they do if its not to much of a bother.Thanks.     im sure there may be an influential difference in doing this but from what i can tell it works the same.. i cant light a floro simply because i dont have enough turns on the recovery, but i can light about 5 neons bright in parallel maybe more.

    any ideas as to what the differences really are between this and a normal JT?

    you know if you dont want to have to take forever winding recoveries on toroids you can just wire a regular bedini SG circuit set to oscillate from 1.5v and give that the recovery winding which is a lot easier.

    im using regular steel as the core on this coil.

    I just checked BGmicro and found only five toroids, They categorize them as ferrite, but if I remember correctly, the T means it's iron core, not ferrite. Of the five, only one was suitable for JTs, the COL1074 at three for a buck (actually 99 cents), but that's not really a bargain. And the size is rather large for a JT, I stick with the 3/8"or 9mm, or the half inch O.D. cores.

    I got a bunch of 1 inch cores for 5 for a dollar from surplussales.com, and they're high permeability, which is good for a JT. I can wind a coil of a few turns of heavy wire and it's got plenty of inductance.

    I found that if I buy a few from a surplus sales, it's most likely they won't have any more of that type after they have sold out. And I often find that I can get parts cheaper from a distributor such as Mouser. I got the Fair-Rite 2673002402 cores from them for 12 cents apiece, and they work great for JTs.

    I didn't see any transistor bargains ar BGmicro, except for the house numbered 2222's at 1000 for $13, but their leads are all chopped off.

    Edit: I had read that , pulled my old BK scope out and the brightness control seems bad. I'm going to put a bridge rectifier on the core secondary and see what it reads. Thanks agn.

    Thanks for the link. Funny thing is, I am a picture person. I'm a graphic artist and I think in hieroglyphics not words. Some kind of right/left brain thing.
    Anyway here is my translation of what you guys said. Is it correct?

    As for efficiency I figured from my searching people have this thing nailed down pretty good. I just want to take good notes, I'm still learning.
