Examination of the a 1,600-year-old Roman chalice at the British Museum, known as the Lycurgus Cup reveals ancient Romans were familiar nanotechnology.

The scene on the cup depicts an episode from the myth of Lycurgus, a king of the Thracians (around 800 BC). A man of violent temper, he attacked Dionysos and one of his maenads, Ambrosia. Ambrosia called out to Mother Earth, who transformed her into a vine. She then coiled herself about the king, and held him captive.

The cup shows this moment when Lycurgus is entrapped by the branches of the vine, while Dionysos, a Pan and a satyr torment him for his evil behaviour.

It has been thought that the theme of this myth - the triumph of Dionysos over Lycurgus - might have been chosen to refer to a contemporary political event, the defeat of the emperor Licinius (reigned AD 308-24) by Constantine in AD 324.

The Lycurgus Cup exhibits a color-changing property that makes its glass take on different hues, depending on the light source. The changes of the colors have been a scientific mystery for a very long time.

Now, a new study from Finland suggests connections between emotions and body parts may be standard across cultures.

The researchers coaxed Finnish, Swedish and Taiwanese participants into feeling various emotions and then asked them to link their feelings to body parts. They connected anger to the head, chest, arms and hands; disgust to the head, hands and lower chest; pride to the upper body; and love to the whole body except the legs. As for anxiety, participants heavily linked it to the mid-chest.

"The most surprising thing was the consistency of the ratings, both across individuals and across all the tested language groups and cultures," said study lead author Lauri Nummenmaa, an assistant professor of cognitive neuroscience at Finland's Aalto University School of Science.

Since 1983 the Marine Archaeology Unit of the National Institute of Oceanography is engaged in the offshore exploration and excavation of the legendary city of Dwaraka in the coastal waters of Dwaraka in Gujarat. The strongest archaeological support comes from the structures discovered under the sea-bed off the coast of Dwaraka in Gujarat by the pioneering team led by Dr S.R. Rao, one of Bharat's most respected archaeologists. Dr. Rao has excavated a large number of Harappan sites including the port city of Lothal in Gujarat. For instance excavations in Bedsa (near Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh) have unearthed the remains of a temple of 300 BC in which Krishna (Vasudeva) and Balarama (Samkarshana) are identified from their flagstaff. Krishna's son Pradyumna, grandson, Aniruddha and another Yadava hero, Satyaki, have also been identified. A more recent historical record, dated 574 AD, occurs in what are called the Palitana plates of Samanta Simhaditya. This inscription ref ers to Dwaraka as the capital of the western coast of Saurashtra and states that Krishna lived here. The foundation of boulders on which the city's walls were erected proves that the land was reclaimed from the sea about 3,600 years ago. The epic has references to such reclamation activity at Dwaraka.

Scientists discovered that dogs across a variety of breeds align their body axis with the Earth's magnetic field (MF) when relieving themselves.

Where dogs first became man’s best friend

Amid the harsh, icy lands of ancient Europe, early man found himself an unexpected companion — the snarling, carnivorous wolf — which would eventually become his modern-day counterpart’s best furry friend.

New genetic analysis of 148 prehistoric and modern animals has revealed that our present-day pooches, from dingos to Saint Bernards, are most closely related to either ancient or modern European canines. The comprehensive study points to places like Germany and Switzerland as to where domestication of dogs likely began, and to free-roaming wolves evolving into the Rovers and Spots we know and love today.



The study was published online Thursday in the journal Science.

“The first dogs looked like wolves,” said study author and evolutionary biologist Robert K. Wayne of the University of California at Los Angeles. “It took some time before these proto-dogs started to look different.”

Archeologists dug up the oldest dog-like fossils dating back 36,000 years ago in Western Europe and Siberia, but it wasn’t certain if they truly were the bones of earlydogs or some other creature. Curiously, the latest genetic studies traced back the family tree of modern dogs and wolves to canine origins in the Middle East or East Asia — tens of thousands of years after those first fossils.

But all this was under the latest Dynasties; The famous Egyptologist and archaeologist Prof. Walter B. Emery describes the most distant ancestors of the Egyptians as being tall in stature and having large craniums, "reminiscent of Cro-Magnons".


While excavating tombs at Saqqara, where the earliest burials of nobles can be traced back to the First Dynasty, Emery discovered the remains of people who lived in the pre-dynastic epoch: Men with blond hair and fair complexions. Emery declared that this stock wasn't indigenous to Egypt but that they were revered by the Egyptians as a special class, an elite called the "Shemsu Hor" (Serpents of He of The Ari/Followers of Horus). He believed that the Egyptians considered them to be demigods, who originally had lived on an island homeland. Harry R. Hall, the Keeper of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum in the 1920s, said that the invaders who formed the early dynastic Egyptian type were "northern invaders," who formed an "aristocracy of northern (and possibly Nordic) origin," over the native Egyptians.

And their faces show this so-called Nordic look even several thousand years after their death. Researchers at the Vision Centre have demonstrated that even on days when the sun doesn't shine, bees can navigate to and from a honey source by reading the pattern of polarised light in the sky and then explain to other bees where to find it with their 'waggle dance'.

"It basically means the bees tell each other where the nectar is by converting their polarised 'light map' into dance movements," explains Professor Mandyam Srinivasan of the VC and Queensland Brain Institute.

There are several candidates for the Egyptian deity that the Mother Goddess turned Bee Goddess morphed into, including the Egyptian God Min, who was known as the ‘Master of the Wild Bees’. Min was a pre-dynastic Bee Master, dated to 3000 BC, or even earlier. Min is traditionally depicted dressed in feathers with Bee like antenna plumes and an erect penis, and his symbols include a white bull and an arrow. Although Min is in fact a strong candidate, upon closer inspection, it appears that the Egyptian Goddess Neith is in fact the deity that the Mother Goddess turned Bee Goddess morphed into, for Neith was a warrior goddess with fertility symbolism and virginal mother qualities; all attributes of the Mother Goddess – and the Queen Bee.

The Sphinx was known by the ancient Egyptians as Hun nb and most of us forget that it was the Greeks who named it Sphinx, a word believed to stem from the Greek verb σφιγγω, or sphiggo, meaning "to strangle". As this definition is somewhat ambiguous to our 21st century minds, we will examine what other ancient cultures knew the Sphinx as in hopes of gaining further insight.

For a start, the Sphinx was known as Abul-Hol in Arabic, which has been translated as ‘Father of Terror’. The Sabians called it Hwl, which equates to the Egyptian Hu. Furthermore, the stele in front of the Sphinx refers to Hor-em-Akhet-Khepri-Re-Atum and Atum-Hore-Akhet, with Thutmosis being described as the Protector of the Horakhti. Egyptologists have often translated Hor-em-Akhet and Horakhti as Horus of the Two Horizons, which harkens back to the two guardian gods Akeru. In short, these are the names of the Sphinx in the language of those whose monuments shared the plateau or who visited the site in antiquity.

But has that helped us understand the true identity of the Sphinx? Just possibly the answer involves another culture altogether – that of the Minoans.
