    Circuit update with caps

Here is the updated circuit with the two caps C8 and C9 which both go to ground.

    circuit

    Preamp

    Q1 BFR93
    C5 100nf
    C6 1nf
    C7 1nf
    R3 100
    R4 10K
    L3 10mh choke

    Power amp

    C1 100mf elec
    C2 100mf elec
    C3 100nf
    C4 100nf
    R1 1.8k
    R2 22k 10 turn
    L1 100mh choke
    L2 100mh choke
    K2 LM317 voltage regulator

On the positive to ground there should be another 100mf elec and 100nf cap in parallel, it is missing off the diagram.

The system of mounting is on a double sided PCB with the ground on the underside, all components should have their leads as short as possible.

C7 to power amp line should be strip line 50ohms or a very short piece of 50 ohm coax with shield connected to the ground plane (other side of board)

I have not looked at suppliers for the PFO 310A, only looked at data sheats, as a possibility

With a 12.5V supply it gives only 2W with a 40mW input. I really cannot see that it will work without a pre-amp.

I ordered some 85y12's today from here.
    Motorola SHW5151 UHF Amplifier Module 5W 700-900MHz,New - eBay (item 150207117776 end time Nov-02-10 08:58:03 PDT)
    The shipping cost is low.
They also got some very cheap VCO,s in their store so I ordered 2 of them.
    Z-COMM VCO 700MHz-1200MHz, V502BMS1, MINI-14H - eBay (item 160408020880 end time Oct-22-10 18:58:07 PDT)
    and
    Z-COMM VCO 104MHz-176MHz, V140MC01, MINI-14S - eBay (item 160408130880 end time Oct-23-10 06:16:04 PDT)
The VHF VCO only got a output of 4.5dBm though.
It's a start at least as there won't be much funds left after my Bedini conference trip!!
    Any of you guys coming?

Still questioning the 10mW input to 10W amp

10mw is plenty to drive these amps and others to 10-15w.
The frequency is linear with the control input voltage, you can use the table supplied by Mini Circuits on the data sheat and put a volt meter on the control line, its that simple.

We are now talking 135mhz and 810mhz so the sizes I gave for the antennas have now changed, I will recalculate and give you them at a later date.

If I can find a site with the toshiba amp I will post it.

    alterative to S-AV10L

Here is an alterative to the S-AV10L

    Hitachi PFO 310A

@10mw input it will give around 8.5watts on the output @ a frequency of 136mhz. The voltage divider resistance will have to be changed for the output drive, minor detail, the rest is the same

    parts list

    Mike or anyone else,

Any of the below sourced parts not the right ones for the job?
Only the ones with an * in front are the ones I'm concerned about
    if there are special considerations.

Need to find a more easily available replacement for: Toshiba S-AV10L amp

Now if someone could post a complete schematic tying them all together,
this took enough time for today. I saw the different amp circuits, etc...,
but if someone could put them all together in one solid schematic, that
    would be helpful to everyone.

Mini Circuits does give some guideline for pcb layout on plug in VCO models and I will also contact their technical advisers for help, But I think they will suggest the same as you did.
