    You are right that micro wave ovens are safe because they are shielded and people should not be affraid to use one, but used out of context they can be leathal.

    Well micro waves ARE dangerous, the level of danger depends on the power of that micro wave.

    Let me give you an example of the power of RF, I used to run UHF 440mhz at 100w and if by accident you stood in front of my Yagi antenna when I was transmitting you would certainly know about it, and after 24hrs even more, spots on your skin, hair loss, sensation of wanting a P**s just to name a few and that is only 100w at 440mhz, now what would happen at 800w at 2.4Ghz.

    Needless to say my antennas were high up out of halms way, and what is describe here in this thread is shielded as is a micro wave oven, apart from which when the frequency production reaches MW the power is very low "but still reacts" in a confined space. Mobile phones use wayup frequencies of Ghz at "micro" watts, but are becoming a big concern, and rightly so, how many people suffer megrain type problems when using a mobile phone all day long?

    Don't let people think it is safe and that nothing will happen, be responsible, if not then that is being STUPID and will cause injury to someone whom is going to copy you.

    Radiation can be a killer if not controlled

    You have just proved proof of concept but in a dagerous way, you could have killed yourself. I have warned all that this is a very rapid reaction, especially if you use the frequency split I gave.

    Harvey you are right, with the nitrogen blocks the hydrogen "hydrogenation of nitrogen", but using a microwave I don't think it would have avoided an explosion, you have to use low energy at THIS point.

    I think that's why you need the free nitrogen, so it will bond with the hydrogen and halt the exothermic combustion thereby storing the energy in the ammonia. I could be wrong, but I think it is necessary for a stable process.

    Good thread Mike. I have been experimenting with this using common household microwave antennas. Shielded of course. Found that standard freq provides the vapor or steam and a secondary triple freq provides the spilt. If only for 30 seconds. The secondary breaks. Not sure why yet. But yeah...we get separation.     I will respect that last message and will continue to read up on the books I have found. The arrl handbook seems to be an excellent source for understanding rf circuits. Hope to hear from you next year.
