Les,
I would change the center coil to adjust that figure. This is not that critical 1.82 ohms may be a little to low for the switch. but I'm going to check that out, I will get back with you. I have some test circuits here. I'm just one guy here and getting a break at work at this time is questionable as to when. I will do my best.

In other words take your time I am still a ways off waiting for parts.
Also I just looked last week and Jameco had the 3120 halls now they are all gone...Wonder how that happened?

ooops! I just realized what you were saying John. You answered the question; I can just raise the resistance of the center coil, no need to waste your time testing.

I did the math on John Bs figures, and I also got a total resistance of 1.822 ohms. Please forgive me if I misinterpret your post John. I believe only one slave coil was added in the equation."Now if I add all the coils together for a total I get this." JB
4.2, 1/x = .2348
6.368 1/x = .1570

So if that were the case,
4.2, 1/x= .2348 main
6.368, 1/x= .1570 slave 1
6.368, 1/x= .1570 slave 2
= 1/.5488 = 1.822

DO IT WITH RESISTORS, DON'T BELIEVE ME, TEST YOURSELF.

Two resistors

4 ohms 1/X = .25
6 ohms 1/X = 1.6
add them together = 4.1, 1/X = 2.4 ohms

ANSWER IS 2.4 OHMS

Do it by putting two resistors together you will see.

Do it simple 100 ohms 1/X = .01
100 ohms 1/X = .01
add them together = .02 1/X = 50 ohms.

Again. 12 ohms 15 ohms 30 ohms

12 Ohms 1/X = .08
15 Ohms 1/X = .06
30 Ohms 1/X = .03

Add them together= .17 1/X = 5.8 Ohms

The hall I was using was a 24V SS443A:

The 15V Zener I am using is a 1N4744:

The hall triggers a MJE2955, which then fires the MJL21193/94 pair.

I will order the ATS137 as John B suggested, looks like they are the same one Rick sells. http://www.diodes.com/datasheets/ATS137.pdf

Can’t we power the hall off the first 12 volts of the battery supply?

In other words, you have 3 x 12 volt batteries to get to 36V – then just use the first 12v battery to power the hall. That way you know you always only have 12volts – no wasted energy in resistors or Zeners.

I know it works, we tested this w/ the basic SG, unless there is something else we are missing…

Yes we can and that's what I was doing initially and it did work OK. I would like however to have all the circuitry on one board and in a box, same as John B.

I tend to struggle with stuff I haven't done before, but it's the only way I learn. Even if I do blow a few components along the way. Everything I have learnt about John B's technology I have either read, seen on a DVD, or taken advice from people on forums on the Internet. I think I really learn when I let the smoke out of things.

I'm also very fortunate to work closely with a few people who know a lot more about this stuff than I do, even if they're on the other side of the world from me.

Why not just put three small caps across the 36v input, and only pull off of one will that work ?

I see what your saying yes I did forget Sorry for that.
yes it would be 1.88 ohms but that is ok as the switch will run fine I did check it today it seem to work fine. I also took the switch down to 1 Ohm and it did ok. Sorry for the mistake but it was late when I got done at work.
I will go back and correct that post as soon as I get time. Thanks for catching that.........

Some last questions to make sure I am reading everything correctly.

The circuit that Jeremy has in post # 198 pg.7 shows the two slave coils (#15 wire)connected to the two
# 15 strands of the master, in a parallel loop, not connected to the circuit. The two #18 wires off the Main coil go to the circuit in series.
Visser shows on post #666 pg. 23 similar two wires from the Main coil, with the slave coils in parallel connected to the circuit at the transistors, as well as John K’s post #828 pg.28 (v1.2.pdf) shows a power windings as control windings as one.
From Jeremy’s explanation of Mag Amps. and his little test coils it seems that the (#15 wires) just connect in a parallel loop. Maybe someone can clarify all this for me.
The other thing is the hall effect sensor. I have it set, as the ceramic magnet passes to TDC on the main coil, the hall magnet reaches the edge of the hall. I know that I will need to tweek this to get it right on. I just want to know if that is in the ball park. I set the timing wheel magnets to be centered between the rotor magnets, and gave an adjustment of the hall about 15% , so I should have plenty of play room.

Just hook up all the coils in parallel and get it running, then decide what you want to do with the two trigger wires. you should be safe doing that . make sure the devices have a been mounted to something like a heat sink plate. You might move a little off TDC like 1/2 the pole piece to start.

I did want to get back to you on the switch The MPS 8599 is good for low level circuits. But looking at the circuit I tried a MJE2955 TO220 package and it worked fine under all the tests. I would rather get everything working right now for you at this end of the world. Or use a BD 244

I aready see some things I would have changed in the winding of the coils, but
these will be a good starting place.

As soon as I get some ATS137 halls from Rick I'll be back in action, no one in Australia seems to stock them that I can find. I'll send through an order when I get home from work.
