Two killed as explosion destroys Brazilian Antarctic research facility | Herald Sun

AN explosion destroyed a Brazilian research base in Antarctica yesterday, killing two navy personnel and injuring a third, authorities said.

Brazilian Defense Minister Celso Amorim confirmed the deaths of non-commissioned officer Carlos Alberto Vieira Figueiredo and sergeant Roberto Lopes dos Santos, who had earlier been reported missing, AFP reported.

''In an act of heroism, they were precisely in the area of major risk in a bid to extinguish a fire and they did not succeed,'' Amorim said.

Navy sergeant Luciano Gomes Medeiros was also injured in the blast, which occurred after a fire in a room housing energy generators of the Comandante Ferraz research base located in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.

The fire is a deadly turn in what appears to be a string of dangerous accidents at the Brazilian base.

Also yesterday the Brazilian Navy confirmed that a re-supply barge carrying more than 2500 gallons of fuel recently sunk less than a mile from the base, The Wall Street Journal reported.

It is a Natural Process:

If you place an iron rod in a dark room and cause it to vibrate at first you'll only be able to tell it is vibrating by touching it.

Increasing the vibration to 32Hz will produce a loud and shrill sound and vibration can now be detected by both touch and hearing. Increase that vibration to 40Hz and you can no longer detect the vibration by touch or sound.

If you increase the vibration to 1.5MHz (HM 6 ) you cannot feel or hear the vibration but you can detect the vibration though the rise in temperature in the iron first warm and then the iron rod will glow red hot and can be detected by sight.
