A team of American bioengineers are trying to create a perfect artificial bee eye, which could revolutionize technology, as it is meant to replace the lenses used in ultra-thin cameras, omni-directional surveillance devices or high-speed motion sensors, informs BBC Online.

As a bee eye has a very complex structure, with over 8,500 hexagonal built-in lenses, each unit being orientated in a slightly different direction, the final image will look like a miniature mosaic.

The scientists from Berkley and University of California say that, by creating an artificial eye, which looks like a dome, they could also discover the way insects create their own eyes, starting with just one cell.

"Even though insects start with just a single cell, they grow and create this beautiful optical system by themselves," said Professor Luke Lee, one of the bioengineers involved in the study.

"I wanted to understand how nature can create layer upon layer of perfectly ordered structures without expensive, fabrication technology," he said.

Insect eyes are, maybe, the most complex miniature structure, as it is made of thousands of minuscule lenses, every one of them guiding the light into a channel containing light-sensitive cells, and only after this long process, the image is produced by optical nerve cells.

The project was financed by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), United States military research group, as this new discovery could be used in security devices.

This symbol is placed over the entrance of a well known banking institution ( HEBREW GEMATRIA: Values from 20 - 29 ), founded in 1765. What I couldn't understand was why a bee hive would be placed over the entrance of a bank. At first I thought it was a way of saying ha, look at you worker bees feeding the privileged few... but they wouldn't do that, so I read up on it and I have to say I'm glad I did, so I thought I would share in case others are interested too.

The bee has been an important symbol to man from the very beginnings of human history, with it's ability to pollinate, the bee has been regarded as mystical and transformative ( or META ) as well as having the ability to regenerate.

Hello,

I totally just threw this together. I dont have too much knowledge with electronics but I like to try and figure things out and build my own. Please let me know what you guys think of it....ways to improve it?

Im currently running ableton (which i used to use for DJing) with analog, outputting a square wave with width modulation, rectifying it with a diode and using the signal to switch 2 mpsa06 transistors in parallel. Ive got 12 volts across the transistors which in turn switch 3 irf740a mosfets in parallel. The fets then switch my power supply of 13.8 volts (i need to get some rechargeable batteries) acrpss the motor.

It works great and allows for some interesting types of pulsing.

The bubbling tumult of the sun's surface regularly produces some pretty jaw-dropping sights, but it's rare that we get to see something like this -- and in motion to boot.

Last summer, an eruption on the sun's surface scored a solar weather hat trick, racking up all three of the major phenomenon scientists observe: a solar flare, a coronal mass ejection (CME), and coronal rain, "complex moving structures in association with changes in magnetic field lines that loop up into the sun's atmosphere," NASA explains. The solar flare in the video is not massive, by the sun's standards, but "moderately powerful," as NASA calls it. But what makes the show special is the coronal rain, charged plasma slowly dripping in fiery loops along the sun's magnetic fields.

NASA's (awesome) Solar Dynamics Observatory watched the whole event unfold, and the mission has now released the above video, showcasing those observations. Though the video seems to play as though in slow motion, it's actually quite sped up, covering a nearly 22-hour period from 12:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. EDT on July 19, 2012. The footage is made up of frames taken once every 12 seconds played at 30 frames per second, meaning that every second of video represents six minutes of real time.
