Culture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Culture (Latin: cultura, lit. "cultivation")[1] is a modern concept based on a term first used in classical antiquity by the Roman orator, Cicero: "cultura animi". The term "culture" appeared first in its current sense in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, to connote a process of cultivation or improvement, as in agriculture or horticulture. In the 19th century, the term developed to refer first to the betterment or refinement of the individual, especially through education, and then to the fulfillment of national aspirations or ideals. In the mid-19th century, some scientists used the term "culture" to refer to a universal human capacity. For the German nonpositivist sociologist Georg Simmel, culture referred to "the cultivation of individuals through the agency of external forms which have been objectified in the course of history".[2]

In the 20th century, "culture" emerged as a central concept in anthropology, encompassing the range of human phenomena that cannot be attributed to genetic inheritance. Specifically, the term "culture" in American anthropology had two meanings: (1) the evolved human capacity to classify and represent experiences with symbols, and to act imaginatively and creatively; and (2) the distinct ways that people living in different parts of the world classified and represented their experiences, and acted creatively.[3] Hoebel describes culture as an integrated system of learned behavior patterns which are characteristic of the members of a society and which are not a result of biological inheritance.[4]

Distinctions are currently made between the physical artifacts created by a society, its so-called material culture and everything else,[5] the intangibles such as language, customs, etc. that are the main referent of the term "culture"

Seeing the forest through the trees

Imagine you are walking through a forest. All around you are trees of different species, age, size and height. It looks pretty random, right? Wrong.

In research funded by the National Science Foundation, Brian Enquist of the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona and his team have discovered a secret in the trees: Hidden among and within the architecture of the branches are fundamental rules that link the size, shape, age and in fact everything about a single tree to all the trees in a forest.

The ancients said "They Passed Over" (from one life to another), And so it was with the coming of spring, as God's Sun is "Resurrected" from the Death of Winter to His New Life (in spring).

In the ancient world, long before the Hebrews ever existed, the celebration of spring was called "The Pass Over." The Sun, which was dead in winter, has passed over to His new life in spring. This is the origin of the modern Pass Over celebration.

This is why Christians also celebrate "The Resurrection", or His return, in spring with a "Sun Rise service"... He kept His Promise, and has returned to us with the Promise of New Life... "HAPPY EASTER-PASSOVER!"

    Astrology

    by Rich Anders

Astrology is a very complex and demanding field and it takes a lot of knowledge, practice and experience to be able to make good use of its phenomenal potential. Therefore, it depends on the astrologer's skill, whether he/she can make use of this potential. For the novice it is deceptively simple to take aspects, which the sun, the moon and the planets form with specific locations of the horoscope and to use ready made texts out of a book to find out what they mean. The problem is that sometimes it works and it even can work quite well. But it is not this easy.

There are many books about astrology that prove that astrology works. So far, I have not seen a single one that explains w h y it works. After all, the distances between an earthling and the cosmic bodies, which are the determining factors of a horoscope, are immense. It makes sense that the sun and the moon influence life on earth because of their relative proximity and the radiation coming from them. It dos not make sense that, for instance, the planet Pluto, which is a small object at the outer limits of the solar system, should affect life on earth. And yet it can have profound effects on someone's life because this planet moves so slowly that its influence through a specific aspect is felt over several years.

Considering the vast distances separating this planet from the different cosmic bodies important for astrology it is obvious that the influence coming from "the stars" cannot be physical. While gravity is a constant factor, which could be taken into consideration electromagnetic influences coming from celestial bodies vary considerably in strength. Moreover, they follow no apparent pattern and, thus, are unpredictable. This automatically excludes them as possible influences in horoscopes, as these depend on predictability. The universe is a dual structure: primarily it is spiritual and secondly it is material. The material plane does not explain the influences "the stars" have on somebody's life. Therefore, the spiritual plane must provide the basis for the influences cosmic bodies have on life on earth.

Science calls it the realm of the quantum vacuum; some call it ether. It is better known as the realm of the spiritual energies. These are the energies attached to matter. To facilitate understanding let's call them spiritual energies. While matter exists in a four dimensional time/space structure in the realm of the spiritual energies there is neither time nor space and everything is interconnected. Most importantly, spiritual energies can be programmed.

Programming spiritual energies can be done in many ways. Education, teaching in schools, prayer, religious rituals, black or white magic and having positive or negative thoughts establish spiritual patterns, which make things happen in the material plane. But the most important programming of a person happens at birth.

Are biorhythms based on scientific research?

Biorhythms were discovered by two scientists working independently of one another. Dr. Hermann Swoboda, a professor of Psychology at the University of Vienna, and Dr. Wilhelm Fliess, a nose and throat specialist, recognized the existence of biorhythms in the early 1900s. Through extensive scientific research, the doctors reached nearly identical conclusions. Each doctor published his discoveries, establishing biorhythms as an area of scientific study. Today, researchers continue to evaluate biorhythms in hopes of determining how they affect the human condition.

What are the three biorhythmic cycles?

Humans have three repeating biorhythmic cycles:

    Background

The akashic records, - akasha is a Sanskrit word meaning "sky", "space" or "aether" and is described as containing all knowledge of human experience and all experiences as well as the history of the cosmos encoded or written in the very aether or fabric of all existence. The records or The Book of Life in the Bible (Psalm 69:28, Philippians 4:3, Revelation 3:5, 13:8, 17:8, 20:12, 20:15 and Revelation 21:27) are metaphorically on a non-physical plane described as a library; other analogies commonly found in discourse on the subject include a "universal supercomputer" and the "Mind of God". People who describe the records assert that they are constantly updated automatically and that they can be accessed through astral projection or under deep hypnosis. The concept was popularized in the theosophical a 19th century occult victorian orientalism movement founded by Madame H. P. Blavatsky writer of several books The Secret Doctrine which when studied you'll find the work is written in reverse, her first book is Isis Unveiled. According to the doctrine there is no end to all things merely a convergence or return to a light body of consciousness. Various views are held according to study because this is not a religion. It is derived from Hindu philosophy of Samkhya as well as ancient Tibetan scrolls and Buddhist writings. It is promulgated in the Samkhya philosophy that the Akashic records are automatically recorded in the elements of akasha one of the five types of elements visualized as existing in the elemental theory of Ancient India, called Mahabhuta which is not a religious book but colorfully historical stories across millions of years from a period of prehistory and pregenesis (a esoteric biblical dogma) period of a long dead advance civilizations due to war and other calamity.

In the Mahabharata mention is made of Chitragupta (lit. "hidden picture"). He is the son of Brahma and a minister of Dharma and his duty is to examine a list of the good and evil actions of men (the Agrasamdhani) after their death. "Nothing is lost of either piety or sin that is committed by creatures. On days of the full moon and the new moon, those acts are conveyed to the Sun where they rest. When a mortal goes into the region of the dead, the deity of the Sun bears witness to all his acts. He that is righteous acquires the fruits of his righteousness there." (Mahabharata, Anusasana Parva, Section 130, Ganguli trans.) The term akashic records is frequently used in New Age discourse. Refer also to Edgar Cayce wrote a book "The Law of One", Book 1 referred to as The Hall of Records.

Alchemy is generally defined as an art which aims to change impure metals into silver or gold. The goal of the Great Work of alchemy, called also the Art, is the "Philosopher's Stone". The Stone was viewed as a magical touchstone that could immediately perfect any substance or situation. The Philosopher's Stone has been associated with the Salt of the World, the Astral Body, the Elixir, and even Jesus Christ. The Elixir of the alchemists has essentially the same ability to perfect any substance. When applied to the human body, the Elixir cures diseases and restores youth.

Ancient Road: The Magic of Salt

    The Magic of Salt

Regarded as one of the most powerful cleansing and protective substances, salt has a long history in human magio-consciousness. Since time immemorial, humans have had need of salt and it has been such a prized substance it has often been used as a currency in ancient times. It also has a long magical history and has been recorded in mythology, folklore and old books of magic.

It is common knowledge that one use salt to protect a home or cleanse a ritual space. Many folks who come into Ancient Road know that salt is used but they do not know why. And in fact many of the so called books of "magic" and "Wicca" espouse the use of salt without a further word as to why. It is taken as a dogmatic "truth" and I suppose it is one of the better ones out there. However, when dealing with magic we must know why we are doing what we are doing. There must be links and correspondences and not just a willy nilly "it feels right to me" reasoning. That is the reason I chose to discuss salt in depth, one of the most used and common magical components to almost every ritual, so here is why it is used in magic.

First of all early man realized the benefits of salt in its antiseptic and preservative qualities. Here was a substance that could take infection out of a wound and preserve meat from rotting. Two things that were essential to life before antibiotics and refrigeration. Here was a substance that aided in the ease of life and helped mankind and therefore had magical properties. Homer called salt "divine" and Plato described it as a substance that was "dear to the Gods."

The Latin word "sal" is the root of the word "salt" and the art of understanding letters as holy unto themselves with a distinct etymology can be found in Latin (as in Hebrew) and is a lost art of occult understanding. Therefore, let us look at the magical etymology of s.a.l.

S: represents the joining of two circles; namely the sun and the moon and is therefore like the yin-yang a perfectly balanced symbol of the masculine and feminine energies.

A: (Alpha) is the beginning of all things. The first. A strong indication that Salt is a building block to all life on Earth.

L: is the Latin emblem for all the celestial glory in the heavens.

So we can see a strong link to a powerful occult etymology in the very word associated with salt. In fact salt is of the Earth and in Traditional Witchcraft is associated with the element of Earth often found on many a witch's altar. Earth is the foundational element where the witch stands and the use of salt in modern Witchcraft traces its roots to the Catholic Church (as do many of the modern rituals). We also know that both the aspurging water and the holy water in Catholic churches contain salt. So why then if salt is "of the Earth" and the Earth in Christian reasoning is a place infected with the infernal would such a substance be considered so holy and purifying?

The answer to this is again related to the virtues of salt and the use of salt again as a purifier against decay and as a healing agent. The presence of salt meant the absence of decay and evil. So what we have here really is an example of sympathetic magic used in the Catholic Church and because Traditional Witches practice dual faith observance many of the traditions from the church found their way into Witchcraft. The absence of salt is yet again revealed in the taboos of spilling salt. When Judas (who had an absence of goodness and integrity) overturned the salt cellar in the Paschal Supper this was said to have angered God and created a space for evil spirits to reside. The spilling of salt is related to this concept and therefore is related to Judas and is taboo.

In the "Three Books of Occult Philosophy" written and compiled by Agrippa in the early 16th century we find an important clue to the magical nature of salt. Agrippa writes " ...Consider, that everything moves, and turns itself to its like, and inclines that to itself with all its might, as well in property, viz. occult virtue, as in quality, viz. elementary virtue. Sometimes also in substance itself, as we see in salt, for whatsoever hath long stood in salt, becomes salt." And if you have ever brined a turkey or eaten salted pork you KNOW just how salty it has become. That is salt "saltifies" that which it touches preserving it forever as salt. In occult terms salt is a great neutralizer of energy and space. Salt also has a crystalline structure and crystals have long been used in many magical traditions to trap energy.

In Ozark folk lore it is believed that witches (who were evil as opposed to Cunning women) eat very little salt because "The Devil hates salt." It is also believed that animals who will not eat salt are bewitched. This again goes back to the belief that the absence of salt allows negative energy (and rotted disease) to be present. There was also the belief that if salt got too low in the cupboard or if you ran out of salt it would mean an entire year of poverty and privation. Again by allowing the protective agent (salt) to disappear meant you were "courting" the dark, decaying forces of the Devil.

So now we can see albeit in a nutshell, how salt works magically and why it is important to the magician. By calling the power of Earth, Malkuth, the plane where we are in our physical bodies, corporeal nature is brought into a balanced neutrality so that you, the magician, may work from a familiar grounded starting point. Salt being heavy of Earth and a purifier is an almost impossible medium for spirits to work with and is vitally connected to us. This is why in Hoodoo (which traces its lineage to the Grimoric traditions of Europe, Jewish Kabbala and African Folk Magic) salt is the main ingredient in our Uncrossing baths. It is a spiritual "re-set" button and a medium that spirits cannot cope with. We are also participating in an ancient ritual use of salt to purify and preserve that our ancestors used. And in my experience one need not use fancy sea salt flown in from the bottom of the Dead Sea. Table salt works just as well.......

    oxytocin - Everything2.com

Oxytocin has been dubbed "the cuddle chemical" by zoologists who artificially raised the levels in goats and found that they exhibited the same behaviors as human mothers exhibit toward their newborn babies. Marijuana has been found to stimulate production of oxytocin, and some experts believe that smoking a little pot can be extremely beneficial to a flagging sex drive, particularly for women. Oxytocin is responsible for the uterine contractions that accompany menstruation and cause the expulsion of the uterine lining. As important as oxytocin is in the birth and menstrual process, its role in the non-procreative aspect of sex can't be overstated. Oxytocin is not simply released during orgasm, it seems to actually cause orgasm. At normal bodily levels, oxytocin encourages a mild underlying desire to kiss, nuzzle, and cuddle one's lover. Once the cuddling begins, oxytocin levels steadily rise, and the hormone stimulates the smooth muscles and sensitizes the nerves in erogenous zones such as the earlobes, the neck, and of course the genitals. As arousal builds and becomes more intense, production of oxytocin snowballs ( a Harmonic Cascade Effect ). Research suggests that oxytocin causes the nerves in the genitals to fire spontaneously, causing orgasm. Men's oxytocin levels have been found to quintuple during orgasm, but women's levels skyrocket. Women require more oxytocin to acheive orgasm, and the brain generously complies; because their brains are quite literally drenched in the chemical during peak sexual arousal, many women are able to achieve multiple and full body orgasms.

Sumo matches take place in a dohyō (土俵): a ring, 4.55 metres (14.9 ft) in diameter and 16.26 square metres (175.0 sq ft) in area, of rice-straw bales on top of a platform made of clay mixed with sand. A new dohyō is built for each tournament by the yobidashi. At the center are two white lines, the shikiri-sen, behind which the wrestlers position themselves at the start of the bout.[2] A roof resembling that of a Shinto shrine may be suspended over the dohyō.

Many ancient traditions have been preserved in sumo, and even today the sport includes many ritual elements, such as the use of salt purification, from the days when sumo was used in the Shinto religion.

World Mysteries - Alchemy and Philosopher's Stone

Alchemy is generally defined as an art which aims to change impure metals into silver or gold. The goal of the Great Work of alchemy, called also the Art, is the "Philosopher's Stone". The Stone was viewed as a magical touchstone that could immediately perfect any substance or situation. The Philosopher's Stone has been associated with the Salt of the World, the Astral Body, the Elixir, and even Jesus Christ. The Elixir of the alchemists has essentially the same ability to perfect any substance. When applied to the human body, the Elixir cures diseases and restores youth.

Human emotion: We report our feelings in 3-D

Like it or not and despite the surrounding debate of its merits, 3-D is the technology du jour for movie-making in Hollywood. It now turns out that even our brains use 3 dimensions to communicate emotions.

    Read more at:
According to a new study published in Biological Psychiatry, the human report of emotion relies on three distinct systems: one system that directs attention to affective states ("I feel"), a second system that categorizes these states into words ("good", "bad", etc.); and a third system that relates the intensity of affective responses ("bad" or "awful"?). Emotions are central to the human experience. Whether we are feeling happy, sad, afraid, or angry, we are often asked to identify and report on these feelings. This happens when friends ask us how we are doing, when we talk about professional or personal relationships, when we meditate, and so on. In fact, the very commonness and ease of reporting what we are feeling can lead us to overlook just how important such reports are - and how devastating the impairment of this ability may be for individuals with clinical disorders ranging from major depression to schizophrenia to autism spectrum disorders.

Link between emotions, physical health universal, researcher says

Much research has demonstrated a link between individuals' emotional and physical health. For example, depression and stress have been tied to self-reports of increased pain, fatigue and disease, whereas positive emotions have been tied to decreases in those ailments.

    The origins of laughter

We know the benefits of laughter on health.
"Science provides few answers to these questions other than in psychology and neuroscience. From the perspective of anthropology, laughter and humour are often overlooked. However, it is a serious subject," says the recent graduate. According to his research, laughter and humour exist in all cultures and times. Laughter is associated with an alteration of muscle tone and changes in brain activation. Studies speak of a state of stimulation followed by a state of relaxation "a subjective state of well-being." But we can also laugh out of discomfort, what we call "nervous" laughter. A person can also be happy but almost never laugh. And sense of humour varies considerably from one individual to another. What then is the primary function of laughter and humour?

Soma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

SomaHaoma ( Close to HAMA ) (Avestan), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sauma-, was a Vedic ritual drink[1] of importance among the early Indo-Iranians, and the subsequent Vedic and greater Persian cultures. It is frequently mentioned in the Rigveda, whose Soma Mandala contains 114 hymns, many praising its energizing qualities. In the Avesta, Haoma has the entire and Yasna 9-11 dedicated to it.
    Vedic Soma

In the Vedas, the drink, and the plant refer to the same entity. Drinking Soma produces immortality (Amrita, Rigveda 8.48.3). Indra and Agni are portrayed as consuming Soma in copious quantities. The consumption of Soma by human beings is well attested in Vedic ritual.

To attain the Way of strategy as a warrior you must study fully other martial arts and not deviate even a little from the Way of the warrior. With your spirit settled, accumulate practice day by day, and hour by hour. Polish the twofold spirit heart and mind, and sharpen the twofold gaze perception and sight ( share , its good for practice "SING, SING, SING" BY BENNY GOODMAN - YouTube ) . When your spirit is not in the least clouded, when the clouds of bewilderment clear away, there is the true void

Midlife crisis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Midlife crisis is a term coined in 1965 by Elliott Jaques stating a time where adults come to realize their own mortality and how much time is left in their life.[1] A midlife crisis is experienced by many people during the midlife transition when they realize that life may be more than halfway over. Sometimes, a crisis can be triggered by transitions experienced in these years, such as andropause or menopause, the death of parents or other causes of grief, unemployment or underemployment, realizing that a job or career is hated but not knowing how else to earn an equivalent living, or children leaving home. People may reassess their achievements in terms of their dreams. The result may be a desire to make significant changes in core aspects of day-to-day life or situation, such as in career, work-life balance, marriage, romantic relationships, large expenditures, or physical appearance.

    Crisis vs stressors

Academic research since the 1980s rejects the notion of midlife crisis as a phase that most adults go through. In one study, fewer than 10% of people in the United States had psychological crises due to their age or aging.[2] Personality type and a history of psychological crisis are believed to predispose some people to this "traditional" midlife crisis.[3] People going through this suffer a variety of symptoms and exhibit a disparate range of behaviors.

It is important to understand the difference between a midlife crisis and a midlife stressor. Midlife is a time from 40-60 where a person is often evaluating their own life. However, many midlife stressors are often labeled as a midlife crisis. David Almadia states that day to day stressors are likely to add up and be thought of as a crisis but in reality it is simply an "overload".[4]
