The illusion-of-truth effect states that a person is more likely to believe a familiar statement than an unfamiliar one. In a 1977 experiment participants were asked to read 60 plausible statements every two weeks and to rate them based on their validity. A few of those statements (some of them true, others false) were presented more than once in different sessions. Results showed that participants were more likely to rate as true statements the ones they had previously heard (even if they didn't consciously remember having heard them), regardless of the actual validity of the statement.

As the illusion-of-truth effect occurs even without explicit knowledge, it is a direct result of implicit memory. For such true 'models of the universe' must not only display the inner form
and structure of this universe, but must also reveal man's relation to it and his
present and possible fates within it. In this sense, certain of the Gothic
cathedrals are complete models of the universe, whereas a modem

model completely omits man. The difference, of course, lies in the fact that

schools for the achievement of higher states of consciousness, and had the
advantage of experience gained in such schools; whereas the designers of the
planetarium are scientists and technicians, clever and
qualified enough in their field, but claiming no particular knowledge of the
potentialities of the human machine with which they have to work.
In fact, if we are in possession of certain keys for their interpretation, the most
astonishing thing about these ancient 'models of the universe' arising in widely
separated ages, continents and cultures, is precisely their similarity. So much so that a
good case might be made out for the idea that higher consciousness always reveals the
same truth, solely on the basis of a comparative study of certain existing models of the
universe which seem to derive therefrom - for example, the Cathedral of Chartres, the
Great Sphinx, the New Testament, the Divine Comedy, or certain cosmic diagrams left
by the 17th century alchemists, the designers of the Tarot pack, and the painters of
some Russian ikons and Tibetan banners.

One of the main characteristics of modem thought is a contradiction
between the way man regards the external world, outside himself, and the
way he regards the internal world, inside himself.
As regards the external world, he has never been more objective, more
convinced of the universal application of laws, expressable by formulae and
consistently measurable in their effects. In this field, any belief which throws
doubt on the principle of measurability, for example, any belief in
intelligence or consciousness belonging to beings greater in scale than man,
is in danger of being regarded as superstition.
As regards his internal world, on the other hand, man has rarely been more
subjective, more convinced of the special validity of his every whim,
imagination, hope and fear, and less willing to admit that his inner world is
subject to any laws whatsoever. The greater part of modem psychology, and
especially of psycho-analysis, has been based on this subjectivity. And in this
field, it is precisely the belief in laws and measurability - for example, belief
that much of human psychology is the result of the calculable interplay of
types, or belief that man's inner world is subject to laws similar to those
governing the astronomical or microscopic worlds - which is called
superstition.

Researchers are interested in exploring how sunlight, sleep and screens (like those on computers and TVs) may affect those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), says Dr. L. Eugene Arnold, a child psychiatrist and ADHD expert at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's Nisonger Center.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate degrees of inattentiveness, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Although ADHD is the most common neuropsychiatric/behavioral disorder of childhood and has been extensively studied in young children, it occurs in all age groups. An estimated 13 million men, women and children in the United States fit the diagnosis for ADHD or one of its subcategories, says Arnold, who is professor emeritus of psychiatry at The Ohio State University, where he was formerly director of the division of child and adolescent psychiatry and vice chair of psychiatry. Arnold collaborated with Dr. Martijn Arns of the Netherlands on a recent study published in Biological Psychiatry that sheds new light on the increasing rates of prevalence of ADHD. This study found that "sunny" regions with high solar intensity, such as the U.S. states of California, Arizona, and Colorado, and countries like Spain and Mexico, have lower prevalence of ADHD. An apparent protective effect of sunlight accounted for 34-57 percent of the variation in ADHD prevalence. The authors speculate that this may be related to sunlight's effects on preventing disturbance circadian rhythm or "biological clock."

The first shows are remembered as being started in 264BC and the last were 600 years later, in 404AD during the reign of Emperor Honorius (395-423AD). Their end was possibly triggered by the stoning to death of a Christian monk called Telemachus who dared stand against them. At this time there were more than 170 Amphitheatres scattered throughout the former empire's dominions.

After the fall of the last Roman emperor of the West (Romulus Augustulus), Rome was controlled by Romanised barbarians. One such ruler was Theodoric the Goth whose Latin secretary Cassiodorus recounts in 523AD the shows he attended at the Colosseum. These shows included wrestling matches and bloody fights with beasts - the ancient Venationes - which could well result in the death of the scantily armed human fighter, the "venator" or "bestiarius". By the end of that century the Colosseum was already covered in vegetation.

By the late middle ages we have fresh accounts of the Colosseum being used for other purposes, first as fortress of a local barony, then as a stage for religious ceremonies and processions until eventually theatrical shows of little religious content were held and finally abolished by the Pope. Similar fates attended the other amphitheatres.

It can therefore be said that the beginning and end of the Gladiatorial shows went hand in hand with the rise and fall of the Roman Empire.
