We are going to be using a razor scooter motor. I just got an MY1016 in the mail a day or so ago. It will be rewound as a pulse motor based on what we have learned. If you have that, and a few batteries, you have what you need to begin. But as I have said a couple times, this will NOT be a 3BGS, although we are using some of the principles we learned there.

      Hi Matt,

Thank you for sharing that schematic I can see how this would work now and cant wait to start on the project.

I see Ebay vendors are doing them for Ł30 -Ł40. They can come with a little gearbox. Should I take it that this is of no real value?

I shop around a LOT on eBay for these motors. I probably have over 20 of them in various stages of assembly. I can usually pick one up for between $25 and $30 with free shipping. Be careful because the shipping, if not free, will tack on $15 or$20 to the price of the motor.

          • The MY1016 part number seems to come as a 250w or a 350w version. Does this make much difference to us?

              • wrtner & altrez,

since we will be rewinding these, those motors should work.

                • I did a quick test this evening. I set up my battery's in the standard config with battery three at 6.7 volts. I used a 12v 20 watt light as the load. The two new batteries did drain a few volts but they charged battery 3 to 12.7v and at the same time my light got brighter and brighter its temp got over 250 degrees.

                  Not sure whats happening.

                  • Your setup

Try any kind of brushed DC motor in place of the light…The bigger the motor the better.

Well, at least you are seeing a little of what can happen with this kind of setup. When you put an off the shelf motor between two positives, the voltage goes into one side and out the other side comes that voltage as well as the generated voltage of the motor. So things get even MORE interesting. 12 volts in and about 14 volts out. Without switching those primaries will still drain, but you get a nice charge on battery 3 up to a point. Beyond that it is wasted.

                        • Harbour Freight has a 12V marine pump motor (item #9576) for $35. Does anyone have experiance with this product. Would it work for this experiment?

                            dmann,
I have no idea if that's a brushed DC motor in that thing or not. I will check tomorrow. I just happen to have one sitting on my shelf that I used as a load on battery 3 in some experiments I did a while back. It's too late to go looking in the basement for it tonight, but tomorrow I will check it out and post the info. I DO know it is much smaller than a Razor Scooter motor though. So it will be harder to work with, and you can't really attach a load to that motor without major modification, since it is built into the pump. I guess the pump becomes the load on the motor, but that means buckets and water and hoses. I did all that. Pain in the butt.

                            • Good Morning!

I wanted to post a few pics from last nights testing. It was pretty intresting, not sure what is going on yet.

I have my motor coming in today and also a 4 channel voltage DAQ coming in as well next week.

Do we need the motor controller?
