Why in the first place did they build that nuclear plant on an area with four tectonic plates. Ah, mankind is of the thinking they can beat, go beyond or fool nature. Pollution from fossil fuel emission is not enough, we have to have this. When will we ever learn?

Actually, the Fukushima nuclear facilities were built and upgraded well enough that they survived the 9.0 quake intact. The failure and explosions were caused by overheating due to the fact that the resultant tsunami flooded the area and disabled both grid power and diesel backup generators that ran the coolant pumps. With that fact in mind, and looking back in hindsight, it was extremely foolish to build the plants on a low lying coastal area wide open to a tsunami scenario, let alone building 5 of them at the same location. The reason they built them there, of course, is that no one wanted them elsewhere. The tragedy could have been averted, though, if engineers had forseen the possibility of a tsunami and taken steps to place the diesel back-up generators at an adequately elevated level such as above the roof top (the tsunami was 33 feet high), rather than at sea level where they were located. Makes you wonder how engineers could have the sophistication to design a nuclear powerplant facility, and not have enough common sense to ensure that back-up power would be viable no matter what situation arose. This wasn't the first recorded Japanese quake over 8.0, and certainly wasn't the first tsunami to strike Japan's coast.

You are right but the problem is firstly the design does not fail to a safe condition. Next they store used fuels in quantities that could go critical and last but not least is the fact that the waste is deadly for thousands of years and we cannot make any containment vessel that can last the time required for it to become safe.

The whole concept of nuclear (or nukiller as bush calls it) power is flawed; we are creating a problem for all future generations in the hope that they will be able to fix it. It’s irresponsible and immoral. It’s about time the fake greenies were informed on the real pollution problems.

If you are quick and clever enough, you CAN ride the tiger; thats not the problem.The problem is, eventually your going to want to get off!

Good analogy for nukiller power, in more ways than 1.Those that have read my posts will understand I am IN NO WAY defending 'them'.

Just thinking out loud. If they were going to fully disclose, it would be something like this;
In order to FULLY protect public health, following Fuctupashima, heres what we would have to do; Firstly, evacuate Japan, a country of 125 million people, and the 3rd largest economy in the world.We have to do this, because highly radioactive water is obviously leaking into the ground, as well as the ocean, where it is 'polluting' the ground water. Its in the air, it has been broadcast by the wind to the surface of the ground.

So, we evacuate the country, to someplace like western Canada, Wyoming and Montana.Need housing, with infrastructure; roads, sewer, water, energy and food distribution systems. Hospitals, grocery stores, etc. And, EMPLOYMENT. Have to move factories, Toyota, Sony, etc.

But wait, 'there's more'; need to modify our lifestyle, on a worldwide basis; all buildings must be sealed; no opening windows for 'fresh' air, anymore.Each entrance must have a double airlock, and any time someone goes outside, must be covered from head to foot, and must strip and shower before entering any building.

But wait, 'there's more'; IF we had already had such systems in place, prior to FS spewing all this highly radioactive fallout around the world, it would be one thing. Since we didn't, every building, after being 'sealed', will need to be gone thru with geiger counters and vacuum cleaners (or whatever) to remove any radioactive dust which has gotten in.

But wait, 'there's more'. If we told the 'sheeple' all of this, and they reacted by demanding all nukiller plants be immediately shut down, all 'westernised, developed countries' power grids are absolutely dependent on Nuc power.
Would have to go on rolling blackouts, with 4-6 or perhaps 6-8 hours of power, per 24 hrs.Think what that would do to the economy and lifestyle of the world? All the supply lines we depend on, are dependent on 'the grid'.
People would only have 1 choice; to get their own generators= increased demand for fossil fuel, more 'greenhouse gasses, etc.

So, the alternative to this totally unrealistic scenario is to accept that Japan is going to have a great increase in the # of Cancer deaths, for the foreseeable future. And, to a lesser degree, so is the rest of the world.While statistically, in 20 or 30 years, will be able to 'make the case' that these deaths are a result of FS, this will just be seen as an inevitable and 'acceptable risk/loss.

Just occured to me; wonder what the Insurance companies will do, regarding insuring people against cancer? If they will modify life insurance policies, for paying out for death from cancer, or limit the amount of coverage for treatment? Or, will they simply cover their losses with increased premiums?

Anyway, this is the calculation I think 'They' have made.I think 'they' were caught totally flat footed. They have no idea how to stop the plants from spewing out radiation, they feel they have no choice but to continue to pump water in, even tho its leaking out as highly radioactive.Basically, they never thought this could happen, and have no idea what to do with it, now.
No idea how to 'get off the tiger', either with FS, or with nukiller power as a whole.Thats what I think.

Oh, and by the way, there ARE things you can do, to protect yourself. For those not in JAPAN, we're not in danger from radiation; we're in danger from radioactive fallout.Produce CAN be eaten, as long as you wash it thouroughly, first. And, there are things you can ingest; iodine, to protect your thyroid. Bentonite clay, and Cilantro, to protect against the other radioactive isotopes. There are protecols.Jim

This is something we can’t fix instantly but it is very possible to phase out nuclear power over a number of years.

Look at the different generating technologies we have. If all the money that has been earmarked for nuclear power was put into alternative energy field, we could solve the energy crisis. It would not be practical to replace all power plants with one source such as wind power but there are many different things we can do.

Photovoltaics are notoriously inefficient but everybody misses the point, once the panels are produced all the energy is free and virtually no maintenance is required. Many green energy sources are relatively low in power density so what we have to do is use that power efficiently. A good example of this is a solar cell with a Bedini type charger.

Sterling engines are 27 to 30% efficient although quite large if using low grade heat, They are about the same efficiency as a coal fired power plant, plus they are simple to maintain and very reliable and quiet. They do need to be put into production.

If every power line tower was replaced with a wind turbine how much power could be produced?

Tidal power is particularly good. In the small channel of water between the two islands where I live there is 600Mw of power in tidal flow, we could easily and cheaply harness 10% of that with no real environmental impact and relatively low cost when compared to a power plant of any kind. I did a study for a local group on this; by placing 10 of these units round the island we could produce 500Mw of power 100% of the time

In fact most of the alternative energy devices are similar to coal or oil in efficiency if used correctly, plus they do not pollute the earth with toxins.

Yes they are costly today but if they were mass produced the cost could be brought down dramatically.

The truth is, we do not need nuclear power and we need to phase it out, it’s expensive and highly dangerous.

I will quote Zbigniew Brzezinski 'never let a good crisis go to waste'. We need to publicize all the problems in Japan and put pressure on our governments to respond. End the wars, phase out nuclear power and develop the alternatives.

Wish I could share your optimism. On alternatives, lets not forget Methane!
I'm surprised I don't see one thread, in the energy forum, on methane digestion.Methane, when released into the aptnophere, is a 'greenhouse gas'.
Last year, the US produced more methane tha greenhouse gas from cars; it came from livestock operations.Tats a LOT of methane gas! There is 1 sewage treatment plant in LA; (not the only one, of coarse). It runs 10
1000hp 'diesel' engines, 24/7, off the methane gas produced by the sewage.
They use them to run pumps and stuff in the plant, but the main reason is it was the safest way they could come up with to dispose of the methane!How much electricity could you generate from that?
I've been tempted to run a hose about 200' up my sewer line, with a snorkel on the end. Run the other end of the hose thru a bubbler, with water and calcium carbonate, to remove the corrosive component, and to act as a 1 way valve, and run it into a generator.Wonder if it would run, and run 24/7, on the methane gas from the sewer system?
Anyway, I think the problem is more fundemental.People are wanting alternatives that allow us to go on as before.We have developed a centralised lifestyle which requires 'cheap, plentiful' energy to function.
And we are now confronting the hidden costs and liability of these 'cheap,plentiful' sources we have used to build/develop and maintain this lifestyle.Alternatives don't fit well in a centralised lifestyle.Actually, I think we are seeing, on many levels, the weaknesses/frailties in such a lifestyle.People congregating in big cities, living at the end of incredibly long, frail supply lines for their 'necessities';Food, Water, Public Safety, Medical care, Employment,Housing,Transportation and Energy.And we see, on a regular basis, these systems breaking down. And, we see the 'hidden' costs of such systems hidden no more.The whole region of the Gulf Coast will be paying the cost of petroleum for years to come.And, the people of japan, like the people of Chernobyl, will pay the price for Nuclear. And, so will all of us.
And I think most people will not want to cut back at all on their energy use, if thats what it takes to be 'nuclear free'.We like our big screen Tv's, and computers, etc.Anyway, I'm going to be watching to see what happens in the next 30 days, when the 'heroes' of FS start to die.But, I'm not optimistic.Jim

How to Detox Your Body of Depleted Uranium Residues, the Effects of Radiation, and Radioactive Contamination

It’s sad but true that there are thousands of scientific references and medical studies out there on the fact that radiation and radioactivity can harm you, yet despite millions of dollars spent by the government to study radiation, virtually nothing is available about a detoxification diet or nutritional supplements you might use if you are exposed to radioactive contamination.

Here’s some of the information we do know from the only book in the world on the topic. Keep this information in the back of your mind as it may one day help save you or someone you know.

Most people are aware taking potassium iodide (KI) or potassium iodate (KIO3) tablets will help block your thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine should there ever be a dirty bomb explosion or nuclear power plant mishap such as the Three Mile Island incident. In 1999, another such accident happened in Tokaimura, Japan where several individuals died from radiation exposure in a fuel processing facility.

What people don’t recognize is that potassium iodide or iodate tablets only protect the thyroid gland and do not provide protection from any other radiation exposure, so taking them should not give you a false sense of security. It’s important to detox your body after radioactive exposure!

One question is, what do you do if KI or KIO3 tablets aren’t available during an emergency? Interestingly enough, according to research by Ken Miller, health physicist at the Hershey Medical Center, he found that an adult could get a blocking dose of stable iodine by painting 8 ml of a 2 percent tincture of Iodine on the abdomen or forearm approximately 2 hours prior to I-131 contamination. Potassium iodine tablets are best, but if they’re not available this is the next best thing.

An entirely different problem arises after you’ve been exposed to radioactive contamination because now you have to get rid of any radioactive particles you may have ingested through the air you breathed, water you drank, or food you ate. Some people suggest Epson salt, Clorox or clay baths to remove any residues on your skin and to leach out any heavy metals you may have absorbed, but the big worry is internal contamination. To gain some insights into what to do, we have to turn to the story of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

At the time of the atomic bombing, Tatsuichiro Akizuki, M.D. was Director of the Department of Internal Medicine at St. Francis’s Hospital in Nagasaki and he fed his staff and patients a strict diet of brown rice, miso and tamari soy soup, wakame, kombu and other seaweed, Hokkaido pumpkin, and sea salt. He also prohibited the consumption of sugar and sweets since they suppress the immune system.

By imposing this diet on his staff and patients, no one succumbed to radiation poisoning whereas the occupants of hospitals located much further away from the blast incident suffered severe radiation fatalities.

Much of this positive result has to do with the fact that the sea vegetables contain substances that bind radioactive particles and escort them out of the body. This is why seaweed sales usually skyrocket after radiation disasters, and why various seaweeds and algae are typically used to treat radiation victims.

In Chernobyl, for instance, spirulina was used to help save many children from radiation poisoning. By taking 5 grams of spirulina a day for 45 days, the Institute of Radiation Medicine in Minsk even proved that children on this protocol experienced enhanced immune systems, T-cell counts and reduced radioactivity. Israeli scientists have since treated Chernobyl children with doses of natural beta carotene from Dunaliella algae and proved that it helped normalize their blood chemistry. Chlorella algae, a known immune system builder and heavy metal detoxifier, has also shown radioprotective effects. Because they bind heavy metals, algae should therefore be consumed after exposure to any type of radioactive contamination.

In 1968 a group of Canadian researchers at McGill University of Montreal, headed by Dr. Stanley Skoryna, actually set out to devise a method to counteract the effects of nuclear fallout. The key finding from their studies was that sea vegetables contained a polysaccharide substance, called sodium alginate, which selectively bound radioactive strontium and eliminated it from the body.

Sodium alginate is found in many seaweeds, especially kelp, and since that time the Russians have been seriously researching the use of their own kelps from Vladivlostok, from which they have isolated the polysaccharide U-Fucoidan, which is another radioactive detoxifier. Because miso soup was so effective in helping prevent radiation sickness, the Japanese have also done research identifying the presence of an active ingredient called zybicolin, discovered in 1972, which acts as a binding agent to also detoxify and eliminate radioactive elements (such as strontium) and other pollutants from the body.

The kelps and algaes aren’t the only natural foods with radio-detoxifying effects. In terms of fluids to drink, black and green tea have shown “radioprotective effects” whether consumed either before or after exposure to radiation. This anti-radiation effect was observed in several Japanese studies, and studies from China also suggest that the ingredients in tea are radioactive antagonists.

In short, after any sort of radioactive exposure you want to be eating seaweeds and algaes along with almost any type of commercial heavy metal chelating formula to bind radioactive particles and help escort them out of the body. Whether you’re worried about depleted uranium, plutonium or other isotopes, this is the wise thing to do which can possibly help, and certainly won’t hurt. Many nutritional supplements have been developed for the purpose of detoxifying heavy metals, most of which contain the algaes and plant fibers and other binding substances.

Basically, an anti-radiation diet should focus on the following foods:

· Miso soup
· Spirulina, chlorella and the algaes (kelp, etc.)
· Brassica vegetables and high beta carotene vegetables
· Beans and lentils
· Potassium, calcium and mineral rich foods
· High nucleotide content foods to assist in cellular repair including spirulina, chlorella, algae, yeast, sardines, liver, anchovies and mackerel
· Cod liver oil and olive oil
· Avoid sugars and sweets and wheat
· A good multivitamin/multimineral supplement

Yet another benefit of the sea vegetables rarely discussed is their high mineral content, which is a bonus in the case of radioactive exposure. Consuming natural iodine, such as in the seaweeds, helps prevent the uptake of iodine-131 while iron inhibits the absorption of plutonium-238 and plutonium-239. Vitamin B-12 inhibits cobalt-60 uptake (used in nuclear medicine), zinc inhibits zinc-65 uptake and sulfur is preventative for sulfur-35 (a product of nuclear reactors) incorporation by the body.

Since nuclear workers are potentially exposed to radioactive sulfur, this means that workers in the atomic power industry need a higher content of sulfur in their diet. MSM supplements provide a source of dietary sulfur, but thiol supplements such as cysteine, lipoic acid and glutathione serve double-duty in this area because they help detoxify the body and attack all sorts of other health problems as well.

The immune system is usually hit hard after radiation exposure, and a number of steps can be taken to help prevent opportunistic infections after a radioactive incident. Though the full dimensions of the protective mechanism is still unknown, Siberian ginseng is one form of ginseng that exerts a definite radioprotective effect and has been demonstrated to lessen the side effects of radiation. It was widely distributed by the Soviet Union to those exposed Chernobyl radiation and is commonly used to help cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

Consuming Reishi mushrooms is another proven way to bolster your immune system after radiation exposure and helps reduce the damage from radiation. It’s been used to decrease radiation sickness in animals and help them recover faster after potentially deadly exposure.

Panax ginseng has prevented hemorrhaging after radiation exposure, prevents bone marrow death and stimulates blood cell formation, so it’s another supplement to add to one’s protocol. In short, yeasts, beta glucans, bee pollen and various forms of ginseng have all been shown to bolster the immune system after radiation incidents. In terms of radiation burns, aloe vera has a proven ability to treat serious radiation burns and offers other radioprotective effects, and can easily be grown in your house.

The amino acid L-Glutamine can be used to help repair the intestine in case of the gastrointestinal syndrome usually suffered due to radiation exposure, and a variety of substances can help rebuild blood cells to prevent hematopoietic syndrome. Those particular foods include beet juice, liver extract, spleen extract, and shark alkyglycerols. Most oncologists don’t know that shark liver oil, with alkyglycerols, can help platelet counts rebound in days.

Depleted uranium is currently in the journalistic spotlight because US weapons are made from this material, and after being fired leave a legacy of depleted uranium dust in the environment, which anyone can absorb. Because the kidneys are usually the first organs to show chemical damage upon uranium exposure, military manuals suggest doses or infusions of sodium bicarbonate to help alkalinize the urine if this happens. This makes the uranyl ion less kidney-toxic and promotes excretion of the nontoxic uranium carbonate complex.

In areas contaminated by depleted uranium dusts, it therefore makes sense to switch to drinking slightly alkaline water and to favor a non-acidic diet to assist in this detoxification. Any of the heavy metal detoxifiers, such as miso soup, chlorella, spirulina and seaweeds, are also commonsense warranted.

Another thing you can do is use homeopathics for radiation exposure. People commonly argue over whether homeopathics work or not, but if you assume the position that they produce no results whatsoever then you must also assume that they certainly won’t hurt you, which means the only loss from using them is a few dollars. Frankly, there are countless cases and double-blind studies where homeopathic tinctures do provoke physical healing effects in the body. Therefore they are a viable adjunct treatment option. One homeopathic, in particular, is URANIUM NITRICUM (nitrate of uranium) which homeopaths suggest should be used in cases of depleted uranium exposure or uranium poisoning. Not just soldiers or civilians exposed to battlefield dusts, but uranium miners and radiation workers may find it quite useful.

While we’ve discussed just a few of the many supplements and protocols you can use to help detox the body of the lingering results of radioactive contamination, including the residues of depleted uranium, the last thing that might be of interest is that there is a plant that is a natural geiger counter. The spiderwort plant is so sensitive to changes in radiation levels (its petals change color upon exposure) that it’s often used as a natural radiation detector (dosimeter), just as they use canaries in mines as detectors of poisonous gas.
