Yes, I'm new. Hi!

In a PMH, N and S currents running opposite directions around the path they have been set on(through the PMH)....round and round

So in thinking of the PMH without the cross bar connecting poles, instead I have magnets passing by NSNSNS. Sort of trapping those 'round and round' currents and making them bounce back and fourth in the U. If everything is timed properly that inital charge can't get out, like a regular PMH.

as i understood, you use a special reed switch that works only on the SOUTH pole ?

So i think that if i use a HALL sensor that works only on the S pole it will be OK


can you please post more pictures and a shematic ?

Anyway i will try every thing but your help will be very much appreciated

I don't believe Ed ever talked about using Reed switches... I'm pretty sure he just used alternating magnets, his un-powered PMH and magnet induced PMH switching coil fields to pull and push magnets and turn the wheel.

This is the machine I'm working on at least.

Well , I did not wind my coils they were robbed out of an old copier but if your winding your coils just make sure you get them pretty close to identical. As far as the reed switch goes I'm pretty sure its a standard reed (not hall) but the position of it worked best for me on top of the coil that was closest to the rotor. I don't know why but it was acting like a hall , maybe a scaler pole influence? Ill post more pics when I put it back together, I've also been getting it to run as a monopole but its not very stable and draws a lil more current.

yes a hall will work.. But a hall takes a voltage to open doesnt it? The Reed is just what we had available. The experiment was just to see if the PMH worked as a motor as John had asked.

I am on a hunt for magnets around town, but coming up short. Just to make sure, super pole magnets are the same as scalar magents right? Super pole N = NS-GLUE-SN and super pole S = SN-GLUE-NS.

GordyP made a small motor yesterday using the PMH as the driver. It is 4 alternating pole ceramics on basically a CD using a VCR bearing. Was just to test functionality. He found a small reed that fires only on the south poles like a Hall. it worked great. the pmh fired every other side, pulsing the opposing pole. So essentially it was only on half the time but had a pretty good amount of torque compared to other pulse motors we have made in the past. If we had another PMH out of phase it would have really spun. or another reed to reverse the polarities. Im sure he will post video as soon as he tidies it up. So this does work as a motor as long as you have a switch.

Also with just battery hooked up with no switch we could spin the rotor and it almost sustained spin. It would push opposing poles, then attract the incoming poles, make the complete revolution and push the opposing poles again.

I also get good results with insulated steel wires used for coil, the cheap kind like rebar tie wire but with nylon coat

has anyone tried alternating more PMH coils as field and armature coils with opto couplers for switching?.

I have been looking for a way to enamel welding mild steel wires, they come in 10 lb spools copper coated for $25, better/cheaper alternative for magnet wire. Found fast drying enamel from Sherman Williams but still need to set up a rig to apply coat evenly and quickly, may be a dipping type setup?

Hey all. I just got through reading Davis's manual of magnetism. It took all evening...i know i missed lots, but I believe its safe to say Ed had this book! And I'm pretty confident he done 95% of the experements in it. There is a machine on page 80 something that resembles his wheel. Has to do with an experiment that shows how magnets will rotate around a wire carrying current/vise versa. There is also lots of explanations of pmh's, and one that he calls a pole splitter. Maybe this is whats missing from ed's shop. This book really suprised me by all of the experiments in it, all having to do with magneto electricity. Ed's machine may be a magneto. Good book!!

It's not for a lack of trying.

I thought I would have a running 16 pole wheel by now, but everything went wrong and tomorrow I leave for a week holiday. So everything has to wait. At least I got a data bundle for my notebook and cell phone so I can keep in touch with the forum while camping in the African bushes, dodging lions.
Firstly I lost a magnet and could not finish the wheel. And now I just cannot get the bipolar switch PCB to develop properly. I have done it so many times before without problems but the devil is in this one!!
I tried it 5 times without success. Maybe the positive spray is old.
So I gave it up as a bad job and will continue when I come back.
Hopefully somebody will come up with good results in the the coming week.

It's coming along nicely

Hi All,

The build is coming along nicely. I have the slots cut out of the rotor for the magnets (I left enough room in the slots for the neos to go where they want to) and now I'm working on the frame and coil mounts.

@John B or Aaron,

It appears that John B is using a steel shaft. How much difference will it make if I use a brass threaded rod shaft? Especially when it comes to making the axial generator. Will this be a good or bad move do you think?

Why do you think it does this? Let's here your theory I'm all ears.

To me it looks like there is some pumping going on in the PMH. When N magnet is over say left side N of PMH. Its shifts the Left side PMH S feild out to attract the next N magnet. Just trying to vision the PMH feilds shifting back and forth interacting with the magnets. little N magnets spiraling to south side and little S magnets spiraling back to north side. Feild to me looks like it pumping.

Aaron. I should have wrote page numbers down. A few things stuck out. One was a pmh in a metal box, would shock the user twice when the keeper was pulled. A primary current and a stronger secondary current. I think this is important.. also magnetic amplifiers. I will have to read it all again tonight. There are lots of things tied to eds machine.
