  • Telluric Transmitter 1.999mc Beacon

    The picture shows Eric Dollard standing next to the transmitter, which is connected to two massive metal fuel tanks burried below. The other pic is of the TDS radios that will be transmitting at 1.999mc when they're modified for this application. The other picture is a modern radio and digital setup to transmit Eric's call sign and some other details. This is what is being used to get it on air or in the ground, whatever you prefer, for now until the TDS system is ready.

    Hakasays built the digital beacon system and helped to get the transmitter tuned - details are in the video that will be posted here - but will also be in the blog at emediapress.com.



    Connor Fisher will be helping Eric to modify the TDS radios.

    For a little under 5 watts, an earlier test, the signals were able to be picked up at well over 100 miles away. This is a more refined transmission and we'd like to see how many people can pick it up and how far. Post your results here.

    The digital beacon had problems so the transmitter has been down - it's also touchy depending on the weather because if the pole supports are wet, it drags the frequency down so that is something that needs to be addressed.

    I made a code wheel with my laser engraver but ultimately, it should be metal or plastic, but this will work for now. It will be hooked to a stepper motor (in all my spare time) and will rotate roughly at about 1 rotation every 90 seconds. I'll have an opto switch at the perimeter but the border is a bit too think and the switches aren't deep enough to reach the slots. I'll try to see if I can use the engraver to cut the circle a bit closer to the slots to give maybe 1mm border - otherwise, I'll use a separate IR LED and sensor and make their own holder so depth isn't an issue.

    The outline circle is not perfectly concentric I can see - will have to adjust that and make another if necessary. Still getting used to svg files in inkspace but that free program is way more capable than many paid programs.

    The sensor will trigger a transistor that will in turn control power to a relay to send the morse code into the transmitter. I should probably have some extra holes around the central hole to mount some kind of 3d printed collar around the shaft that locks onto the wheel from both sides. I'd like to have a smaller wheel but the dot slots would be way too small - they're already .03 inches as it is. The dash slots I tihnk are .07 inches wide. I should engrave the message on the face of that wheel as well just for identification. I should also have a curved arrow showing the direction it should spin - in this picture, the message starts at about 10-1030 and goes clockwise. The message is discussed in the video in the first post.

    A purely mechanical variation is better if it had a spring loaded metal contact that hit shots that were either like this or at 90 degrees more like a record, it would be more bulletproof but I only have so much time and this is about as bulletproof as it needs to be. It will be more reliable than a software programmable beacon that can glitch.

      This is very interesting; 5 watts can send a signal about 100 miles under a some conditions of workable platform unless it does not work under all other conditions
      100 miles? 5 watts ? in the early days of CB radio's that worked in all direction without any problems at times in the right weather conditions it was possible to transmit a
      signal about 2000 miles across the United states and talk to a person in a way far away place; using only 4 watts; going - 2000 miles humm?
      and the device could be held in ones hand; or drive it around in ones car.

      Well; as shown above; as a person standing in front of an prehistoric beast; Well T-rex as it were with the beast; using more watts and being much bigger and going less distance; ( Impressive ) to say the lest; future technology of radio transmissions; am I missing something; ? and what about the cost?
