The article you posted about the magnetic field vibrating the water molecule to keep it from freezing has me thinking, if the mag field can vibrate the water then surely it can vibrate the ice, maybe it is a piezoelectric effect.

Maybe the frequency of the earth's mag field is in resonance with the water-ice molecule.

Suppose a thunderstorm is a big resonant capacitor, the mag field and altitude cool the water to ice crystals that resonate with the field, they resonate and produce energy that is absorbed by the water within the cloud until the charge builds to high then you get a release in the form of lightning.

Im stating nothing as fact, just thinking out loud.

As you can see in the second pic when combined they form the Smith coil.

Professor Pang Xiao-Feng and Deng Bo studied the properties of water, and their changes under the action of a magnetic field were gathered by the spectrum techniques of infrared, Raman, visible, ultraviolet and X-ray lights, which may give an insight into molecular and atomic structures of water. It was found that some properties of water were changed, and a lot of new and strange phenomena were discovered after magnetization. Magnetized water really has magnetism, which has been verified by a peak shift of X-ray diffraction of magnetized water +Fe3O4 hybrid relative to that of pure water + Fe3O4 hybrid, that is, a saturation and memory effect. The study is being reported in the November 2008 issue of Science in China Series G- Physics, Mechanics & Astronomy because of its significant values in science and extensive applications in industry, agriculture and medicine.

A DC electric field will tend to induce ice nucleation at a lower degree of supercooling, and there is evidence to show that an AC electric field delays the onset of ice nucleation. Industrial research has shown that a magnetic field can be used to delay nucleation and to induce small, unclustered ice. Smaller ice crystals are essential in the preservation of the structure or bioavailability of frozen materials, particularly biological or food products. On the other hand, larger ice crystals facilitate faster freeze drying because it results in less vapor mass transfer resistance. The end part of this review introduces another application of magnetic field in the form of magnetocaloric freezers. This technology is a potential alternative to heat pump drying for commercial freezing and refrigeration.

Here's a Smith coil I made sometime back, I havent put this one in ice yet but I will soon and will post pics.
This coil is in series in other words there are three complete left hand winds that are connected in series and three right hand winds, the winds are alternated.
I will also connect the winds in parallel and freeze just to see if there is a difference.

Seems Iv ran out of storage space, will have to find another way.

Very interesting articles the one on superconductors and the alinement of the oxygen atom really caught my eye. H2O with a little more O formed in an electric and a magnetic field.
I'll rebuild my cell soon, my cryogenic lab is my wife's freezer , she and I had a talk I think I have her talked into letting me move the freezer to my shop after school starts, we'll see

I want to run high voltage through my cell as the ice is forming but I cant do that where the freezer is now, safety first.

I have and old car that Im going to pull the distributor from and build a high voltage rotary spark gap.

So much to do and so little time

I think that inside a cloud when it reaches a certain concentration of ice crystals (under the influence of earth magnetic field of course )there is a tiny imbalance that occurs which start small then accelerates reshaping the neighboring crystals until it reaches critical mass, as an illustration see post http://www.energeticforum.com/148369-post85.html

this imbalance may be due to :

if you think about whats happening with the ice its spinning and bobbing (Static Charge, water can act as a capacitor ), so the field is being pulsed, well not the field but the ice, I would think it wouldn't matter.

there may be a slight vacuum due the higher altitude

there may be an interaction with the ozone layer- needs more reasearch (see link provided by petar113507 : Superconductors Go Fractal - Science News )

there may be an interaction with the inner van allen belts (see Process for Altering the Energy Content of Dipolar Substances http://www.energeticforum.com/145953-post70.html )
