It would seem a safer option and easier to have them separate, but I'm not too keen on the idea of using relays and other physical switches if I'm honest. Maybe it's worth the experiment to find out.

    Then again I have a couple of 1.25-2.4kV DC laser power supplies here, and a 8kV AC neon sign transformer. This pulsed coils route is because at the moment I'm afraid to use them Probably more dangerous using the flyback though because I really have no idea what's coming out of it.

    Thanks for your comments, and for starting this thread because this and the SEC discussions have turned my attention back to what got me interested in all this "free energy" stuff in the first place From here I can start to pay more attention and understand what's going on in your videos hopefully, now that I have this tiny amount of first hand experience everything seems a bit easier to understand. I might hook up one of these spiral coils to the spark gap output now and see what happens If you see a strange object in orbit tonight you'll know why
    If you put an optocoupler or an optoisolator between the 555 output and whatever you are driving with the 555 you will avoid frying them.

    Do you have an oscilloscope?

    Physical relays are good for extreme power switching, but they waste a lot of energy and they limit the frequency of switching. I suggest using a rotary commutator if you want to try physical switches instead of transistors. Connect the shaft of a regular DC motor to the shaft of one from which you have removed the windings. Drive the regular DC motor normally to get the desired spin rate, and use the commutator from the second DC motor which has had the windings removed to make and break the circuit containing the primary.

    Hi dR, Very nice coils, good work. Don't get frustrated if you don't get a good output straight away, it took me quite a bit of tinkering to get a resonant condition. There are a few ways to pulse the coils, finding the best way for you and you're coils is the trick.

    I really like you're coils they are beuties. I've been really busy working lately and conditioning batteries. I hope to be back in the fray maybe next week.

    I like you're workmanship very craftsmen like.

    And finally, the flat spiral coils Which took many more hours than planned. I might have made more work for myself than I needed to because since the simple SEC experiments I figured things like a wooden base right next to the coil would affect it. So I thought better do it this way in the first place.

    Made using "Bendy MDF", which was not as easy to work with as I had hoped because if you're not careful the bits between the gaps come popping off...



    8 long and 8 short sections of Bendy MDF, and 40 support blocks per coil



    All glued in place



    Upgraded the construction by adding screws, with 29 grams of copper for both the 17 SWG primary and 24 SWG secondary wires. They are now also adapted to be possible to hang them on a wall, which will be especially useful if they don't work



    Wound in opposite directions...



    ... Eric Dollard style: 2 turns on top of each other before going to the next inside gap with a half turn at the end (wire still not attached to anything yet so it's still dangling there with tape to keep it in place)



    And these toilet cistern floats will transform nicely into a termination



    Although Eric Dollard or Peter mentions that a neon bulb is better than a sphere in low power systems, so I'll be making the end of the coil winding in the middle connectible rather than fixed to anything.

    Sorry for taking up loads of screen space btw

    This is the pile of junk I'm currently working with



    The circuit and mid-building spark gap, which will be contained in a box with a protruding pine dowel for screwing to adjust the gap distance



    And these are the coils I was talking about earlier, still with no primary on the 2nd coil, and a bit of tape to keep the secondary of the 1st coil in place because I haven't got round to finalising it, which is also why one looks taller than the other

    Ah ha! Success!! Literally a few seconds ago I've replaced the 500mA power supply with a 4A supply, and it's now able to do more with the flyback. I still can't get it to do anything with the 240 to 2kV transformer with a capacitor on its output, but then I haven't tried the other suggestions yet. I've been playing with a spark gap going into the Tesla coil primary and seeing what happens on its output, which brings me to here... The 2kV transformer did nothing. The test was a neon bulb and also putting the scope probe on the topload. No neon glowing, and 30V 50Hz oscillations which have nothing to do with what I'm doing. So on to the flyback.

    The flyback finally produced some sparks with the 4A supply at 6v and 550-600mA input. Still nothing on the TC output. I connected the capacitor I had previously been using, and suddenly the spark gap got a little louder and brighter The neon is now glowing near the TC output.

    The capacitor I'm using here is a 20kV 680nF version of these [edit] Or 680pF according to the spec sheet. It says 680n on the case though. Or "20kB680n" to be precise.

    Thanks for the advice. I'll see about uploading some pics of the construction of the TC I was talking about earlier in this thread, and also the flat spiral coils. Speaking of which I'll now have to finish them off and put them to the test Anyway I'll look in to signing up on image shack or whatever now to save attachment space on here

    Remember to be careful with the cap size, bigger will mean more current. Once the amount of power that can be delivered from the secondary is enough and the voltage high enough it can give you a nasty shock or burn.

    If the frequency is high enough you won't feel a shock so much as be burned from the heat of the plasma arc, I think.

    Thanks, I'll give that a try tomorrow. I've just spent the last couple of hours taking a broken old PC monitor apart and found within it the hugest flyback transformer I've ever seen. It's also got some tuneable looking screw things on it which say Focus and Screen, so that could be interesting. Either way, a sticker on the tube says 26,000V Hoping the thing still works.

    PS I finished the flat spiral coils. Just need to solder the end of the wires to a point which I can connect things to in the middle, and devise a suitable method for powering it. I'll upload some pics tomorrow

    Try putting a small capacitor across the primary coil, of a few nF to 1 uf make the negative of the capacitor go to the battery negative, capacitor positve to the primary coil positive.

    Making arcs uses a lot of energy, input increases just before the arc breaks out then drops again while the arc is supported.

    Depending on the frequency will depend on the cap size. The primary cap is important to get more current through the primary.

    I'm having limited success anyway. We're back in the land of crazy happenings again that's for sure. Putting the neon bulb next to all kinds of objects such as wood and cardboard causes it to glow It likes being connected to the bottom of a Tesla coil secondary with nothing else connected to the coil, it just happens to be on the desk. Then it glows nicely.

    But I'm getting nowhere near the kind of sparks I've seen in youtube videos etc that people get from flyback transformers. In fact the flyback transformer doesn't produce any sparks at all. I've increased input voltage to about 8v but had to stop there because it's only a 500mA power supply and the circuit was already drawing slightly more than that. So I'll have to step up to a 4A supply next. But I'm thinking something more than I'm seeing should be happening at least

    I think the skydrive is limited traffic I sometimes have trouble seeing the drawings too.

    Basically I switch the negative side of the coil the coil power can be from the same source as the circuit but I went with 24 volts for the drawing.

    So from positive of the battery it goes charging inductor, primary capacitor positive, primary coil switch then battery negative. It's very simple really.

    Acheiving resonance at the same frequency with both primary and secondary is the difficult part. It can only be tuned by the operator for the coils used, there is no other way.

    Hi Farmhand. Could you please explain how you've connected this circuit to your coils? I've managed to view the image once a couple of weeks ago, but that SkyDrive thing seems to be completely unreliable so once again I can't view it.

    Anyway, the reason I'm asking is, apart from the fact I can't see your circuit diagram, I made the 555 driver circuit last night and hooked it up directly to the Tesla coil primary, but nothing at all is happening because it's mostly a short. So I'm going to play around with some transformers and flyback transformers etc with the intention of using that as a HV input source to the Tesla coil. We'll see how that goes though

    I haven't tried any "big" transformers yet, only a 6kV trigger transformer and directly to the TC primary, but the same effect happens in both: Nothing, less than 1v in the secondary

    I'm also going to have to fiddle with that circuit a bit as well though because it's drawing 200mA at 3v so that's no good. He also says on the page if you change the resistances you can get different frequencies which I probably need to be doing and might be why I'm not seeing anything yet, but he hasn't bothered to mention in what way things will change

    An alternative I'm thinking of is if I can get the 555 circuit to work, I'll make a tiny Tesla coil just to get high voltage, then use that as my power source for the bigger coils. I dunno, it always seems easier in my head

    [edit] Update: I'm getting some sparks from a 240 to 2kV transformer at approx 5v input. With this transformer, as I increase the input voltage from 3v to about 5v, the current rises sharply to 200mA, then it reaches a voltage threshold of some sort and it drops back down to about 120mA. A neon bulb glows with one end connected to the positive HV output, and lights up properly when both wires are connected. So from here I'll try to play around and get an idea of what's going on with this circuit and also keep an eye on the input current because I'm a bit afraid of popping things, as the current goes up to 350mA when I short it (make sparks) or put a capacitor across it. So lots to figure out

    Very nice, that fluro is lit up good. And it looks as though it is lit up without a receiver coil, just a plate and virtual ground, Awesome ! I like it. That looks usefull.

    I ended up getting my earth stake stuck in a rock about three feet into the ground. hahaha so I'll have to get some more, I think I found a spot I can get it down.

    Feel free to carry on guys, but I won't make town for a while yet so I'm kinda stalled on this again now till I do get into town.
