Electronics Simulator

While researching various things I would like to accomplish with electronics it has become apparent that I should look into software to emulate my circuits before spending the money on components and hoping I got the design theory correct.

Anyone have recommendations? Or should I just trust my reading and keep a good selection of components on hand for testing?

Ideally for me it will be windows based, not terribly demanding for computer performance requirements.
