@slider, i hope it works for you. I meant to point out as nueview has, that variable resistors for the 1150 ohm resistors would be good for tuning your particular coil setup, as it will be different from mine.

@Xee2 - I tried out the 20K resistor and LED to find the HV pin of a flyback and while not having 80V of DC in my shirt pocket, instead hooked it up to the output from a transformer inverter.
Every pin except 1 lit the LED
Or, indeed, is that the one, somehow ?

Flyback transformers are not all the same, but there is normally only one pin that connects to the HV terminal. I assume that the inverter is putting out AC (the instructions were for a DC voltage). If so the AC is probably coupling to the other coils in the transformer (since they all share the same core) and thus the voltage is showing up on all of the pins. Not sure, but that would be my guess.

I use a 1N4007 diode and a capacitor to rectify the output from a Joule thief for my testing. Any DC voltage between 40 volts and 1000 volts should work as long as the LED can handle the current. If you use a Joule thief you probably do not need the 20K resistor.

4 flybacks later, i'm getting a feel for this, but not much joy. I can get HV now...except there are issues of safety on 2 flybacks. 1 arcs across the bottom of itself in one spot and the other wavers up and down in tone constantly. The most solid sounding one in fact doesn't seem to want to produce HV, but it's a very solid tone. The 4th is an old Electrohome G07 flyback from an arcade monitor.
I originally had a 180ohm and a 100ohm together as the 280ohm of Seth's, but, yeah as each flyback is different, I thought to put a pot in series with just the 100ohm resistor. Result is a way of testing these flybacks with pitch/frequency.

Got a couple more at least in the shed and 1 of those CRT monitors still works fine.

Hi folks, Hi minoly, my line of thought is experimenting.
It does seem these circuits have different characteristics, though if the same type of radiant spike can be had with the flip flop, then it is worth looking into, since this circuit seems to drive the transistors, in my case mosfets, with a lot of kick.
Right now, I'm trying to rejuvenate my old car battery and this flip flop really kicks out the radiant spikes, while using less coils and transistors.
Here is the proper schematic for what I am testing, it is bifilar coil.

that makes sense, I have not used this ckt directly on the battery, however, if you can get hold of JB and Tom B's FEG book, take a look at page 19 - there you will see how JB uses the "flip-flop/multivibrator" ckt
I'll give it a try at some point, still having fun with this super simple and elegant cap/resistor,diode on the base :-)

This is probably the most interesting. Voltage across bulb is almost a 50 volt square wave when using a 1.5 volt battery. Caution - over 1000 volts without bulb.

I have worked for several days on your circuit trying out different configurations that have been posted here. All of them work. Today I went towards the backspike charger approach that Skywatcher is doing with the French Flip Flop. For some reason the pairing of this Radio Shack transformer and the MJE13007 makes a great 12 volt backspike charger. A 1N4007 diode off the collector makes it happen. I am simply using a 10K pot with a 1K resistor on the base. The diode leads to a second 12v battery (+) and that battery (-) leads back to the (+) rail just like on a Bedini SSG. This is an open ended system and is probably something that John has already done long ago. The exact parts arrangements with the Radio Shack 12v transformer and the use of a 110v LED bulb are probably unique. I still consider this a blocking oscillator at it's core as Wikipedia defines it.

I tried different LED bulbs with this charger and the best one was a smaller 110v LED spot light bulb. At 50mA the light is on bright and the unloaded voltage coming off the diode is about 20 volts---enough to charge with. If you crank up the amps with the base pot it makes the light brighter and the charge voltage goes up to over 40v---but it is a diminishing return for the power used.

This is a pretty amazing little device considering what you can do with it. I highly recommend getting that particular transistor that you chose. I tried others and they did work but not as well. Heat is an issue if you push this thing too hard (use a heat sink) and a protection neon across the base and the emmiter is a good idea just like on an SSG.

How did the output vs. input work with the XEE2, if compared to your french flip flop? I've built the XEE2, and my final version uses an MJL21194, only because I do not have the higher voltage NPN... but it does OK. I would imagine the french flip flop is more of a true inverter, in terms of loading it down, and being able to load it down, i.e. "make current available", no?

Also, thanks for responding to my question rescopes over on youtube.com. I watched your video where you used a coil to look at The Slayer output, that's great! When you say you fealt one should not put the oscope directly to the collector / ground on HV circuits, does this include these 110 VAC inverters? I imagine the spikes, go fairly highly... 2-300? Or, were you referring to CFL circuits where we are spiking into the 4-600 VAC range? I just don't want to wreck my scope, I just got it !
