Hi Bizzy,

I am not an expert on loading pictures. Most of mine have been small that I have uploaded to this forum. I think for large pictures most of the people on here use one of the web based storage sites and then just add the link to their post. That way you don't run out of storage space on this forum. Maybe someone else can tell you the best way to do that.

I have a program that came on my computer called Microsoft Digital Image starter edition that lets me save my drawings into different formats and that usually changes the size to something will work on this forum. Of course you lose some resolution doing that so you may not want to do that with some pictures where close detail is needed.

It is always good to remind everyone that the pulse to the motor MUST be
out of step with the pulse from the energiser to the battery. This is crucially
stated in John B's FEG document.

That is correct. With a simple 1 phase coil circuit as a trigger compared to the three phase circuit that will be used to charge the battery both should be out of step with each other.

With my little knowledge of flywheels I would agree.That is why every says that a flywheel stores power. The differance in phases I refered to should hopefully prevent the unit from falling into equilibrium.


Previously to check my flywheel trigger mounts I was using a PM motor to run the flywheel. the fly wheel was triggering a seperate circuit to run a seperat wound field motor. I did this to check the pulse I was getting on the flywheel and to see how my mosfet circuit reacted.
Everything ran smoothly and I got a great pulse into the motor. This weekend I hope to install the wound field motor. Initially I will run it directly from the battery so I can see how well it runs without a pulse. Then afterwards I will run it with the mosfet circuit so that it will pulse.

I know I need to get it up to a certain speed first to create momentum in the flywheel but also to get the magnets passing at a rate over the trigger coils that will produce a usable volatge to trigger the mosfet.
Up until now I have simply pushed it as hard as I can with my hands and with the non pulsing PM motor that was fine. However If it is not enough for the wound field motor with the mosfet circuit I may have to add a pull cord similar to a chain saw. I already have a long enough cord and sheve with a divot in it which would be perfect. However It would have to be at the end of my shaft, which means I would have to re-enforce the bearings on that end, which could delay construction.
I'll keep everyone updated.

here are the magnets after they are mounted

There is one thing I wish to caution about for anyone building this type of trigger device. The magnets will NOT stay on the metal Like this. Even with the turned up outer ridge the magnets will still fly off.( I know becuase I have had to repair several holes in the walls from previous experiments.) I found the best way to keep them in place is the "handy man's secret weapon" duct tape.
Once I position the magnets on the steel I duct tape it in place by wrapping around it several times. Then continue to the next one. Once all are taped in place I bolt the metal with the taped magnets to the wooden mount.
IN addition to holding them in place, the duct tape can also be removed later if the magnets need to be adjusted . I had to move the magnets several times to find the correct distance between each magnet.
FYI I found that 1 inch apart works best.

Wound field motors

Good evening everyone
I got my wound field motor hooked up and running. However in doing my first tests I noticed the motor was getting very hot. So that is telling me the motor is too small fo rthe job. Like I had mentioned before the motorsw available in Grainger are either too big or too small.
can anyone recommend a company that has a good variety of wound field motors for sale?

Are you using an automobile starter motor?

If so, they can have rubbish bearings because they are only used
for a second or two at a time. I have thrown out the bearings on
mine and am looking for a bearing seat for a pair of quality bearings.

No I am using a wound field motor from a blower. It has speed and low voltage and amp requirements but also low torque. Which is why I need to go to a larger wound field motor.
I don't have the resources to alter a starter motor as needed so i am looking more for some stock motor that can be used. that way anyone who wants to will have an easier time of replicating it.
Another option which I may also use is to simply make a smaller version of my flywheels and trigger mounts.
I can use the smaller version to proove my theory and design (if it in fact it works) then graduate to a larger version once I find a larger motor.

Are DC motors from power tools suitable? I think so. You should be able
to get a cheap powerful DC drill cheaply, especially if it has a worn out
final gear or chuck problem.

I am not sure if they would be suitable or not. They would have to be wound feild motors. And I guess the only way to find out if they ar eis to tear them down...unless someone else knows for certain???
