Hey greg, Good job, I haven't put my tape on yet because i've been waiting to ask you about the leads.

Is it important that the leads exit from the top and the bottom like you have them?

I made my negative lead come up the side of the core and it exits with the other one but they have extra insulation on them. I did it like that so there was no gap on the last bit of core. But I waited, i've been meaning to ask. I don't see how it could make a difference really, I just hope there is no problem with mine exiting so close to each other. I can still change it easy enough.

Should I ? Is there a reason ?

Oh ... those leads. Yes ... they must exit like that, but Bob says that if you are going to put it in the Faraday cage, that ALL of the leads must exit straight off the upper and lower surfaces of the toroid. This is because they are supposed to go to posts on the outside of the cage.

For our purposes I don't think it matters, but it's probably good to keep them apart so they don't cross-couple in any way ... I can see that. To be safe, do what I have done ... that's also the way W's come off in his videos.

Hey Farmhand,

I had a brief twang of extreme paranoia. I began to wonder if I had wound my toroid the wrong way or not. So I 'Googled' every way I could think to verify what is 'Clockkwise' and what is 'Counter-Clockwise' when winding a toroid.

Well I found many examples and they all agreed. I referred to the 'guide' and I did the wind according to that, and then double checked YOUR pictures to verify that our windings are opposite.

WHEW! I am much better now. You know that sinking feeling when you've worked long and hard on something and then you realize you may have made a BIG fundamental error ? I had about 3 minutes of THAT! Glad it's over ... I can die happy now.

I'm relieved that your relieved. I even improved my tape job by unwrapping the tape onto some small bits of hose then cutting them in half. Wicked idea if I must say so myself.

Yes I had that sinking feeling too for a second. Usually I get that feeling when the smoke rises from a circuit I just spent two nights soldering up and checked 5 times already.

So i'm happy now with this tape job and happy to proceed. Hows it look to you, leads are exiting correctly now aswell.

Looks GREAT!. Now there are left and right hand twin toroids. As I said, why would anyone tape a toroid this size with 2" stuff?

Oh and "yes" ... a very WICKED solution indeed. The coverage is more than adequate with the 1" tape, and I think you use much less because the wrap is more efficient.

Glad you brought the terminations (leads) straight out ... and nothing lost anyway if it ends up not mattering.

Today I will add the logic gate circuit to my protoboard and test ... report findings + or -.

Am anxious for the MODFET driver chips to arrive. I'll test that device on my present 90KHz PWM circuit. That will tell me allot about them.

What to do on the equator !

You know greg I just worked out what to do if you live on the equator.
It's simple, you just use two toroids wound opposite like ours and connect
them in parallel then turn them on their side and face the holes north south.

Obviously.

Just kidding, but seriously maybe whichever way it's wound just turn it on it's
side. Nah just kidding again. It should just work either way if you were right
on the equator or not at all. I would guess.

Hi Greg, I'm having a lot of trouble finding some yellow winding/transformer tape to buy.

Could you tell me the actual name of the type of tape it is. Like "PFTE Tape"
or whatever.

Or could you tell me the brand name or industry name for it. So I can search.

Or link me to some tape for sale where it reveals the actual material of the tape or a common descriptive name for it.

It seems to be almost impossible to find some to buy in australia. I don't accept that. There should be some of this stuff in Australia to buy.

Lodestone Pacific and this is their description of the 1P802 they sampled me:

They are nice people too, but they have a $50 minimum per line item ... which sucks, but they seem to sample allot to people. It must be available there ... it's no mystery material.

Ok They are asking for a part number and quantity. How much is a roll ? I will ask for $40.00 dollars worth, I might as well make it worth my while. You know it doesn't make any sense they will send one roll for free but will only sell you more than $50.00 dollars worth. Thats moronic !

OK so I want the small rolls, it says availability - Standard 50M roll, 3" core, width 960mm or 30M roll, 32mm core, width 960mm.

It says they are 960mm width. Thats almost a meter or three feet. Which one did you get and how did you fill out the sample request ? I want 1 inch wide tape on a small diameter spool. I'm starting to think when I find some I should buy a big box of the stuff and go into buisiness selling to experimenters.

It's not a very intuitive process. I will eventually need more than one roll. I might as well get a couple of rolls now. But I want to get the stuff I want.

On a side note. My computer seems to behaving strangely too I will need to reinstall the operating system soon, so I may go offline to a degree for 24 hours or so. While i try to find out what is going on with it. Maybe it needs a clean. ( Dust ) Been a while since I cleaned it. Though it does seem to be a missuse of processor/memory resources problem. A reinstall should speed me back up again. I hate it when you click the mouse and it takes time for things to happen. Waiting for the computer to compute is not good.
