  • What grade of ferrite is the best to use?

    Hi all,
Really stuck, I really need to find out what grade of ferrite core to use to get the best results, when used to transform magentic energy into eletric energy.

Different mixtures of ferrites have different specs like operating temperatures, amount of magnetic field needed, direction of field, frequencies, shapes etc. So it depends on how you build your device. A description would be needed for someone to help.

      Hi Ray,
Iotayodi is right about the fact that you will need to say more.

I will make a blanket statement for anyone making a joule thief, however.
The highest permeability will give you the best results.

        Ferrite core

        Hi All,
Thanks for the replies, the core dimentions are, 2 inch by 3 inch circles, the magnet strength is 5233 Gauss.

Your question cant have any answer , you need to know at which frequency your transformer will be used, the permeability needed , the max Remanance , core leakage %, etc etc. If its just to experiment, use any core you have, after your experiment you will know what you need anyway with the data collected from your experiment.

          Best Regards,

What application and what desired result? This is not just a simple question because it depends on what the application is.

If you are looking for HIGH permeabilty toroid cores where your circuit would be something like a blocking oscillator of a few winds generating high efficiency then I would suggest 'W' class material which is 10,000 Mu or higher. 'H' class which is now becoming rare because of the materials that are required to make it, deliver 15,000 Mu performance from a single toroid.

            All the best.

            Regards

            TP
