Interesting to see how many Americans still equal "socialism" to communism, Russian and Chinese style, while to me as a Dutchmen, the term socialism is much more nuanced, like explained on Wikipedia:

So, to me, the core of socialism as described here does make a lot of sense, even though it has been abused by one and the same elite that is abusing capitalism. This is not about capitalism vs. socialism, this really is about ordinary people vs. the ruling class.

I fully agree with your last sentence in the above quote, however it really shouldn't surprise you that Americans view socialism as something we do not want. We do have a Socialist political party here, and its popularity peaked in 1912 when party leader Eugene Debs ran for President and received 6% of the vote. But since that time the Socialist party has been unable to bring in even a mere 4%. So it is clear that Americans don't want socialism. And you are right, we do equate socialism with communism. After all, as Wikipedia also points out,

Vladimir Lenin, drawing on Karl Marx's ideas of "lower" and "upper" stages of socialism[10] defined socialism as a transitional stage between capitalism and communism.

The reason that so many immigrants left their homelands and came to America is because America offered them a chance to better their lives, and the lives of their children. A great many of those immigrants were able to accomplish their goals within one generation, because capitalism worked for them. Even today the trend continues. Just look around, and you can see countless success stories of energetic and entrepreneurial individuals who have set examples of what can be achieved when one pursues their dreams. Take Bill Gates, for example. Bill's father improved his own life by enrolling in law school under the G.I. Bill, after serving in World War II. This gave Bill junior an opportunity to attend the best schools, and that helped him to earn a SAT score of 1590 out of a possible 1600, equating to an IQ of 170. That helped him to enter Harvard University, but he later dropped out of Harvard to pursue his ambition of starting a computer software company. He saw a need, filled that need, and became fabulously wealthy doing so. Anyone in America could have done that [maximized their potential] if they had the same dream and had pursued it with the same enthusiasm and work ethic that Bill Gates demonstrated. We probably wouldn't be conversing in this forum if it had not been for Bill Gates and his vision for the future.

Take, for another example, our current President Barack Obama. He began life as a bastard child (his Kenyan father was already married when he illegally married Barack's mother), and yet he rose from obscurity to pursue and attain his ambition of becoming the most powerful leader in the free world. And that is fine, as it demonstrates that in America anyone can become President. What isn't fine, though, is the direction in which he is leading this country - towards socialism and fascism, with aggressive power grabs designed to erode our freedoms and enslave future generations.

What we need is less government involvement in our lives, not more. Neither of the two major political parties understand how deeply the public is disgusted with politics as usual. Republicans who think that the 2010 elections will be a bonanza for them may be shocked when large numbers of incumbents in both parties are voted out of office. Our job will be to see to it that as many incumbents as possible are kicked out, and that those we elect to fill their seats favor smaller government, lower taxes, less spending, and the restoration of freedoms as originally guaranteed in our founding documents.

You name it, The postal system, to health care, all our stupid wars, bailouts, the list goes on and on and on again. By now it should be clear that these failures could only be planed. No one could f--- up our world this badly unless someone (the ruling class), the elite, were doing this with a purpose in mind. This purpose does not include our well being. The two party system serves one master. Revolution will be hard on us and our families and all of mankind. It may be an old cartoon, and the names are now different, but the plan is still in use and hasn't changed one bit.

It's no coincidence. Bill is a creative genius with tremendous insight and foresight. He saw a need and filled that need, then continued to create products that people would want and/or need. It's as simple as that. IBM sought out Bill Gates because of his expertise. They needed an operating system, and he provided it in the form of PC-DOS, which he offered to them for a one-time licensing fee of $50,000. He did not transfer the copyright to them though, and was wise not to. He changed the name to MS-DOS and made millions more dollars providing the system to several other computer companies.

Bill has sometimes been criticized for investing his charitable foundation funds heavily in other companies that are sometimes seen as having operational or environmental impacts that are adverse to the poor people that his foundation is supposed to be helping. Bill's reply to that idea is that by investing heavily in those companies, he is able to reap large profits that are then given to the needy people (as of 2007, more than $28 Billion), and that his large investment in these companies also gives him voting rights that can influence company policy to improve environmental and working conditions. In other words, he's using his financial clout to buy a say in how those companies will operate, and that's a good thing.

Along the way, Bill may get hoodwinked into helping support some charitable programs that may have devious underpinnings, such as some vaccination objectives. I do think, though, that his intent is good. Unlike other charitable trusts, Bill and Melinda Gates formed theirs as a truly transparent trust, where benefactors have full access to determine exactly how their donations are being invested and dispersed. Theirs is the world's largest transparent charitable trust.

At a town hall meeting in Nashua, New Hampshire, Obama gave the American people a lecture on weathering the financial storm: "When times are tough, you tighten your belts. You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college."

Excuse us? Does Obama really believe families suffering hardship and misfortune are buying boats and taking extravagant vacations? How dare the president lecture the American people, who are struggling just to make ends meet, when Obama himself fails to practice what he preaches? And as he chastises with one hand, he proposes even more economic hardship and misery with the othertax, borrow and spendthat's approximately 5,300 additional dollars of debt for every man, woman and child in the United States... and that's just for this year(R-WI), Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee put it:

Wasn't it a way to get Americans who own a vehicle outright and which gets them from A to B, to trade it in for a shiny new one along with the accompanied loan?

Obama is a lawyer. He is all talk and no action. He is very, very good at talking I'll give him that but eventually the public will wake from his rhetoric.

I am reading in many places that he will be a 1 term president. Time will tell.
