It has a high gain but only with very low collector current... anything over 10ma and it drops like a rock...

I underestimated the MPSA06... it's actually a pretty good transistor but its low voltage rating is a problem...

you mean use the MPSA06 to trigger the 2N5551? Wouldn't make any difference... it might use less energy from the trigger coil, but it would just be taking it straight from the source instead...
