some interesting stuff! I'm a beginner in the field of electronics, but a quick learner. Just wanna let you all know that black iron oxide is also very commonly used as a concrete dye, so you may be able to get it locally from your concrete plant for uber cheap. it's mostly used to make concrete look like slate when making stamped concrete patios and such. I'm definitely going to be trying it, and various other materials for cores. Oh, has anyone tried 'Orgonite' for a core?? If you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up. I've made some of it, and when I wrapped a copper wire around it and stuck it in distilled water, it actually generated a small charge on its own....

Expansion of the topic
I've recently switched gears on my methods and I was looking for a core for my specific needs when It hit me as I walked through Harbor Freight, steel tape measure! being made of spring steel and coated with a thin plastic you could make custom laminated toroidal cores Also, you could easily weave them together to create bi-toroidal cores.
While spring steel isn't the "softest" of materials, in the case of a tape measure it can be readily available and cheap.
