I guess it is said to reduce like heating and cooling bills and save money that way.

I think it would only work if everyone did it.

Like in South Carolina I think it is still the case that kids have only had school 4 days a week for a while now.

I don't know if parents in that community have enough time for that to work out, but I don't think it would work out in most US cities because most parents are already hurting for time for their kids and straining to pay for child care.

4 day work week

If people need hours because they're on an hourly wage, they'd
be missing 20% of their money. Unless, it turned into 4 X 10 hour
days. I used to work 4 tens 12 years ago and loved it. Same hours
but 1 less day of using gas to get to work, etc... and a 3 day
weekend.

9am-7pm if that was the normal hours would cut into family time
for dinner as that is late to stop working for many people, etc...

There are a lot of pros and cons to it. Lot to think about.

4 days at school, seeing the complete failure of American public
schools on average to bring American kids up to the level of the
rest of the world, I think going in the opposite direction of having
1/2 day on Saturday like in Japan so 5.5 days per week is probably
more beneficial. Sacrificing necessary education to save a bit of power
when we have solutions to energy I think is completely unworkable.
If in Virginia or whereever, if they can show those 4 day a week kids
are at least equal to or higher in their comprehension then go for it.

I guess it's true I would expect an exception here or there.

There are industries now which don't do normal business hours and those may chose to do something different.

But I guess I mean at least the people who work "regular" 5 day jobs now, maybe schools too.

Hopefully with more time parents would have a lot of good influence on their children.

I don’t think a 4 day work week would work for everyone; we have too many different lifestyles. For example I have been self employed for many years and even though technically retired I’m just as busy now as in the past. As a result I work whatever hours are needed to complete a job. Thus I might be working late at night or on the weekends on the other hand if I get tired during the day I will just lie down and take a nap or maybe take the dogs for a walk, etc. Try doing that on a 9 to 5 job.

But society has changed over the years it used to be the man worked and the woman stayed home and took care of the home chores. Of course back then a man could earn enough to support himself and a wife, plus being a housewife was a full time job in itself.

But as modern appliances became available an entire day was no longer need just to wash clothes, etc. Naturally to purchase all the latest labor saving appliances, along with ever increasing taxes, this now requires the income of two people. Thus most people will work whatever hours are needed to get and maintain their labor saving appliances.

The company where I work has more than 300 employees. During the summer of 2008, when gas was consistantly over $4 a gallon, several departments had the opportunity of working 4 days a week, 10 hours per day.

Because we are on the east coast and many of our clients are on the west coast, it actually benefitted our west coast clients. Previously, they could only speak with a live person from 9am until 5 pm eastern. With the 10 hour days, they could have an extra 2 hours a day to speak with someone in that department. The way it was set up was that half the employees would work Mon - Th and the other half would work Tues - Fri. After gas prices came down, they discontinued the program.

I am in one of the sales departments and even though I travel one week a month, the rest of the time I am required to be in the office. There are at least 20 of us in my department and we all have company laptops. I can understand us having to work 5 days a week, but there is no reason why we have to work in the company office daily.

We have repeatedly asked for the option of working at least a few days a week at home, but are always denied.

Maybe once gas starts inching up to $5 a gallon, the powers that be will reconsider.
