I am going to buy an oscilloscope, and I need advice.

I have US$ 160 to spend on the oscilloscope.

what you recomend? a PC based oscilloscope?

or a DSO NANO scope?

or something else?

Nice toy. 200 kHz only, yes. But it comes in a nice plush flannel sack!
Only one probe, plus a patch cord. Good for audio frequencies, automobile diagnostics maybe.

Hantek is a reputable company and their bottom-end USB DSO is not a bad deal, I think. I believe its specs are a little better than the MDSO one.

However... you can get a much better all-around _analog_ scope and still stay within the budget, I think. You can get two of the same probes that come with the Hantek for around 25 dollars the pair, and then you can get, for example, a Tektronix 2225:

Which is a quality instrument, and still have enough left over to buy a pizza.

So the 200khz is to slow isn't? The use would be for a rotored ssg, running at 3000 rpm with 10 magnets, so is 500 events per second 500hz (3000/60*10=500), maybe the 200khz little scope can be usefull.

I have found there are some people that will go out of there way to help experimenters be more effective with their time, equipment and Money .

TinselKoala is one of those people.

Mr. Nunnerley is another fellow that does likewise.

Ultimately this attitude helps the whole community do a much better Job.

A device which is very limited, but nonetheless worth noting, is the Windows scope which runs through the sound card and is limited to the sound card's response:

But the price is right - and it could be running within the hour.

You will need cables terminating in the stereo 3.5mm minijack that your sound card is likely to have.

Also, be VERY CAREFUL about the signal you put in to either of the two inputs or you will blow the card.

I bought it to have a handy tool to check signals in the field, where no external power supply is available and it has been kind of helpful there. You can use it as a signal detector in your lab or as a third channel if the two channels of your real oscilloscope are busy.

Try to get a low end scope from Hantek or Rigol, they are at least usable for easy tasks on the bench. Technically, a PC scope is OK, but a complete unit is more intuitive to handle, I think.

I have a DSO203 which is a nice toy, but you'll need some time to get used to it, find all the functions and learn how to use them etc.
But it looks wonderful!

I also have a PC scope which is much easier to use and get used to.

The DSO is easy to carry around. The PC scope... well, you can use a laptop but it is still a BIG difference with the DSO.

In short: the PC scope gives you more scope for your money but also more weight.

The description here is not correct for some reason, the speck is higher, so look on the Velleman web site.

It has all the maths functions as well as a perminent readout on a separate screen for both channels.

It is a little more than you want to pay, but you get a spectrum an: also built in which is very useful

Max input with a 10X probe is 300v peak to peak or with 100X probe 3000v

It has a built in safe guard for your computer incase you try to fry it

I like the idea that this scope is somewhat homegrown from Germany. Has full support with a forum. Also comes in kit form for less money. Maybe about $100 with probes assembled? Price is in Euros at 59 plus 7 shipping plus probes.

I am in same situation and the orig poster of this thread. I don't know anything about scopes, and have little money. I heard the Hantek 6022 software sucks compared to their more expensive models? I would assume this dscope comes with better software?

Perhaps someone here could give an opinion on this scope compared to the others in the $100 range.
