Cap and Trade Cap and Trade is a risky venture. From what is provided for information on the process it looks like a huge trading company could corner the market on the credits. It is nothing but a "get out of jail" card for the carbon based power producers. Our refineries will be hit the hardest out of this process. There is relief for the natural gas and coal fired generation producers but nothing on refineries, does this mean we will be buying or gas from China in the future? 0 Comments 07-17-2009
Nuclear is where we are headed. Nuclear is the power of choice for the future. Within 50 years are choice of fuel for generation will not be coal but nuclear. In the meantime we need to change regulations and laws to be able to produce uranium grade fuel for power plants in the United States instead of buying old warheads from Russia. We also need to use new technologies for clean coal production such as coal gasification. Take advantage of the low cost fuel while we can and it will help us bridge or dependence of coal and wind and solar power. 0 Comments 07-17-2009
Transmission restrictions Transmission restrictions is a variable to overall electric pricing. When ever you have restrictions such as limited capacity or access to the grid, your price goes up. Restrictions also limit generation development, not enough capacity no more power to go across the lines. Transmission is the foundation of any power project or satisfying demand when it gets hot or cold. Therefore when we start blaming for high costs look at the root of the problem, transmission. 0 Comments 07-17-2009
Coal gasification Coal gasification is one way to still use an abundant re-source such as coal without the emissions of burning coal. Coal gasification removes the harmful attributes of coal such as mercury and sulfur and produces a clean burning gas more safe than natural gas. The cost of producing the clean gas is higher than burning coal but the overall cost of producing steam or electricity with the gas is competitive. This is one way we can bridge the cost of moving from coal to renewable energy. 0 Comments 07-17-2009
Today's energy prices are down due to light demand. This is why we have big stock piles of coal, electricity prices are low, and natural gas is at $3.50 per mm/btu. As long as we live on the life of cycle energy prices we will never fulfil our commitment to renewable energy it is just to expensive. Instead we wait until prices go up and then we want to do something about it and then it is to late as we are committed to long term contracts on energy. We need to do something right now to transition into renewable energy by making the commitment now. More transmission, incentives and tax credits. 0 Comments Links |
