You say the device only passes in one direction----so it is probably a thyristor.
Triacs,SCRs,Thyristors(there in even one called an alternistor!) are all used
in similar circuits for similar purposes and all tend to get called triacs.
In the same way all vacuum cleaners tend to get called Hoovers !!
Is the part No something like BT 138? If so could you let me have it so I can
look up its data sheet.

To be quite honest I do not know as the circuit was done by my ee where we work and he is on hols untill the end of this month. The idea was mine but the electronics he designed so as it would do what I wanted. The triacs are unmarked apart from a part number which is for our normal work that we do for toshiba. They are used for switching screw compressors and handle a min of 20amps.
One thing though, he said that we do not need diodes as the triacs will block when not switched on and will only pass in one direction either AC or DC, if that helps you, let me know what you think.
