What if it was flat track and had 2 wheels on the front turning with the propeller on the back pushing it. We have touched on this before in a number of different threads, but ordinary compressed air IS COP>1 if the HEAT of compression AND the compressed air are both captured and used efficiently. In commercial compressed air systems, usually the heat of compression (compressor gets very hot) is dissipated into the environment and only the compressed air is stored for use. This is why the efficiency of compressed air systems is usually considered to be about 50%. What is interesting in these systems is when you place a second compressor INSIDE the tank of compressed air and insulate the tank. Then, when you further compress the compressed air, all of the heat of compression STAYS IN the tank and the energy is not lost. So now, let's look at an automobile driving down the road, running on a tank of compressed air driving little wheel motors. At 60 mph (96kph) you have quite a bit of air coming at you. A carefully designed scoop funnel could "pre-compress" the air, say to 3 atmospheres, which is then compressed by an on-board compressor into the on-board tank. Since we are starting with air that is 3 times denser than normal, compressing it up to the tank pressure will only take one third as much energy. The HEAT of compression from this process can then be used to further expand the compressed air as it enters the drive motors to produce even more mechanical energy to push the car along the road. Some variation on this process will most likely extend the drive time of the compressed air system considerably, and possible lead to an understanding of how to extend it indefinitely. You would probably want the car to have a very low "co-efficient of drag" so the air it is moving through does not slow it down. Also, in keeping with the ideas of this thread, one of the wheels could be used to drive a blower to "pre-compress" the air even further from the scoop funnel before the on-board compressor. If you could get the air in the pre-compressor in-take zone to 5 atmospheres, the probability of continuous operation becomes quite high. I talked with Spork33 today, after posting the above. He's the person featured in several of the DDFTTW videos. He is convinced that existing laws of aerodynamics can explain this phenomena, and he is in process of composing a scientific paper for publication in a refereed journal that will detail the mechanics involved. Bear in mind that you will not be able to just plop this on a flat surface such as a gym floor, give it a good push, and it take off accelerating. The device on the treadmill is analogous to a cart going along with a tail wind of the same speed, and the mechanism makes it go faster than the tail wind. He said he has been assembling about 20 of these to ship out to a few people (primarily skeptics) from various forums who have asked to replicate the effect. He said that in doing several at once, the parts run around $40.00 USD. He asks another $5.00 for shipping. So at this juncture he's only doing it on a limited basis for scientific advancement. At that price, he's not willing to make very many. Until the thing is mass produced, it will be fairly expensive. We (PES Network, Inc.) are in discussion with him about entering into an agreement to build and ship kits with adequate mark-up to make it worth our while, e.g. $80 retail. Because the gadget won't accelerate across a flat surface but will only move forward on a treadmill, the number of people wanting one will probably be fairly low, and the practical aspects perhaps lower yet. It certainly is a scientific curiosity. Perhaps the principles underlying it may eventually spur some significant aerodynamic advancements in efficiency. |
