Crazy idea... with the SSG

I have been debating this for a while and I wanted to get others input.

On this page...

Battery Reconditioning and Rebuilding Supplies for Automotive Lead/Acid Batteries

They have a method of testing each cell of the battery. My thought was, what if I put the ssg to each cell of the battery with a metal hanger as they do in the video ( Step 3 ). would this be a foolish thing to do? as would a spark ignite gas? in the battery....

I know when I charge a single battery as opposed to multiple batteries I can make a single battery recondition faster. I was thinking hmmm could I not break this down to the cell level using this method....

I watched the battery extensively and saw no gases effect at all. I would still be VERY VERY VERY careful if this is tried. I saw 1 or 2 bubbles rise to the top over a 1 week period. But i did not smell any hydrogen at all. And when i placed the battery back on the regular charger, the hydrogen smell filled the room. had to ventilate (and def no smoking..lol) with the fans, tho, i smelled no hydro and no gases.

Might suggest wearing space suit tho and maybe a blast shield

all kidding aside i did notice specific gravity on 2 cells. On the quick charge video i was doing. focusing on the cells with lowest specific gravity would speed the process and would be a good idea. As far as the video you were referencing, with the additive powder i have not tried bought a book and it said to only add distilled water. I guess you can empty the battery out in proper containers and refill with only distilled water. the crystals then will dissolve will give the proper amount of specific gravity. but focusing on the bad cells is a excellent idea altho i havent tried it, and some sparking does occur when you hook these up, but if there is no gasses i dont see a boom. hth

you know what you need to do Mart is get some 2 volt cells...

I was considering getting a glass container and cutting up a battery and putting the plates in with acid so I could see them charge. I would like to see the forming of the crystals on the plates. I was considering getting a USB microscope camera and taking time laspe photos of the plates...

Hmm what if I took a motorcycle battery and cut a section of plasitic out then replaced it with glass... I wonder what I could use to bond the glass in ... maybe resin..

One of my many adventures....

ive seen people on the internet talk about making fishtanks, i believe they used epoxy. But it should be on the internet. and it held lots of water. With no leaks. And bonding to the plastic of the batteries, im not sure what plastic composition they use. But im sure they make something that would bond the 2 together. As far as watching the crystals. I took my lighted magnifier, and opened up the sealed lead acid battery. It had a flat cover that was easily pried up. It had little screw vent caps that i was able to tap unscrewed. So i could look inside, and i was able to watch the crystals dissolve. I did not put a camera on them. However everyday you could see more and more of the plate separations coming back. I think it would be really cool, if we could see it in time lapse, under a microscope. And if it works for you it might be something i try in the future

Heres another crazy idea,

Im wondering when one of the inventive geniuses on this board is gonna marry the little ssg with a bubbler to produce some hydrogen. Im sure someone will shortly would love to see that.

That would be really cool mart!

though I would suggest using perspex or acrylic just in case the hydrogen goes bang don't know how it would react to the acid though...

I have tried producing hydrogen with an ssg. We only used basic model of the ssg to see how well it would break the water down. We output the current on to 2 316L stianless steel plates about 2mm apart in a clear pvc container. We just used distilled water nothing else. The coil was 800 turns of 18, thats was the only difference in the SSG part.
It took about 2 hours to develop 4 pounds, but it worked and it ignited. I think overall a little more current would help develop the gas faster.

We are also using the same ssg to grow a battery. Except we added 2.7k ohms of resistance to the trigger circiut and had the machine running in resonance. No Wheel required. Just sweep the coil one time with a magnet and it starts running. We use a 12v solar panel power supply. The battery is just 2 lead sheets in a jar of acid. Wrapped up with some thin HDPE plastice. In a glass 1 gallon pickle jar. I really haven't done precise measurements on the battery but it puts out 2 volts at about 5 amp hour now and still growing.

I wanna try a 55 gallon drum (HDPE). Seperate 6 chambers and have 6, 2 volt areas going. About 36 pounds of lead in any cell. But thats costs so I gotta save my pennies, and tire weights.

Cheers
Matt

If you look at the other boards it has been done. It is how some are conditioning there cells for better production.
