UFO discussion - what about flying saucers or other craft from extra terrestrial origins? I'm sure some governments of the world have the capability for anti-gravity flight and other transportation methods but I wouldn't be surprised if we are visited by outsiders from our place and/or time.

I have witnessed about a dozen flying objects that violate the so-called laws of physics. I have seen a large something fly over my house when I was in 5th or 6th grade. It was up about 10 stories high and was moving from North to South. It was about the size of several 747 airplanes and was moving very, very slow like 10-15 miles per hour. I was mesmerized by this as I looked out my window. I was awakened by a low vibration hum. The next night at the local airport, there were many sightings of smaller "ufo's" and even made it to the paper.

Almost all the others have been metallic looking spheres. Perfectlly round and just floating in the sky not even moving. Then suddenly, just blinked out and disappeared.

I've seen other but I have never forgot about seeing these.

I think there were a lot of TRV-ing done on this topic and ofcourse the crop circles. Crop cirlces are a way to comunicate between different alien races and some kind of guiding system. I havent seen any UFOs, I guess Slovenia is just not interesting to them.

Neural Network FAQ, part 1 of 7: Introduction
Subject: What is a neural network (NN)?

First of all, when we are talking about a neural network, we should more properly say "artificial neural network" (ANN), because that is what we mean most of the time in comp.ai.neural-nets. Biological neural networks are much more complicated than the mathematical models we use for ANNs. But it is customary to be lazy and drop the "A" or the "artificial".

There is no universally accepted definition of an NN. But perhaps most people in the field would agree that an NN is a network of many simple processors ("units"), each possibly having a small amount of local memory. The units are connected by communication channels ("connections") which usually carry numeric (as opposed to symbolic) data, encoded by any of various means. The units operate only on their local data and on the inputs they receive via the connections. The restriction to local operations is often relaxed during training.


Some NNs are models of biological neural networks and some are not, but historically, much of the inspiration for the field of NNs came from the desire to produce artificial systems capable of sophisticated, perhaps "intelligent", computations similar to those that the human brain routinely performs, and thereby possibly to enhance our understanding of the human brain.


Most NNs have some sort of "training" rule whereby the weights of connections are adjusted on the basis of data. In other words, NNs "learn" from examples (as children learn to recognize dogs from examples of dogs) and exhibit some capability for generalization beyond the training data.


NNs normally have great potential for parallelism, since the computations of the components are largely independent of each other. Some people regard massive parallelism and high connectivity to be defining characteristics of NNs, but such requirements rule out various simple models, such as simple linear regression (a minimal feedforward net with only two units plus bias), which are usefully regarded as special cases of NNs.


Here is a sampling of definitions from the books on the FAQ maintainer's shelf. None will please everyone. Perhaps for that reason many NN textbooks do not explicitly define neural networks.


According to the DARPA Neural Network Study (1988, AFCEA International Press, p. 60):

... a neural network is a system composed of many simple processing elements operating in parallel whose function is determined by network structure, connection strengths, and the processing performed at computing elements or nodes.

According to Haykin, S. (1994), Neural Networks: A Comprehensive Foundation, NY: Macmillan, p. 2:

1. Knowledge is acquired by the network through a learning process.

Thanks for posting the link to that movie. It was very fascinating. At times I felt it was a bit conspiracy theory-esque. Especially when the interviewees kept referring to "them" - as in the people controlling things, without any reference to who "them" is. I wonder if the interviewees believe "them" are the people controlling oil and gas and our current energy supply?

I did find the geographical shapes found on Mars REALLY cool! I have wondered if that sort of thing was present, especially since they released data of dna being found on Mars.

And another thing I'd never thought about - they are right! We haven't been back to the moon!!!! Why on earth not go back????? Hmmmmm....

I was having a chat to my father tonight about UFO's & he told me this story.

Several years ago my father was taking lessons to get his private pilot's license & his flight instructor told him about a UFO experience that he had had when he was a flight trainer for the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force).

His role was to train new pilots at the RAAF base at Sale (in country Victoria). Apparently there was a known corridor where UFO activity occurred between Melbourne & Sale, although this fact & the following incident was kept under wraps.

All the trainee pilots were instructed not "to interfere" with anything in this area.On one occasion however, a RAAF plane did venture into this area & either went too close to or tried to attack a sighted UFO (my father can't remember the exact scenario). This plane did not return intact but wreckage was located & identified which was viewed by the instructor. The instructor told my father that what was really amazing was that all the debris collected from the plane was formed into round circular shapes like dinner plates.

Edo-period UFO


The Iwase Bunko Library has in its possession a document entitled Hyouryuukishuu (”Tales of Castaways”), which was printed during the late Edo period (1603-1868).




The document recounts the stories of Japanese sailors who find themselves in foreign lands after becoming lost at sea, as well as castaway foreigners washed ashore on the beaches of Japan. To the Japanese people, who at the time had been living in a prolonged period of national isolation, these exotic tales must have seemed very fantastic.


Among these stories is the account of a wrecked ship with a very mysterious appearance.



According to the document, this vessel washed ashore at Harashagahama in Hitachi-no-kuni (present-day Ibaraki prefecture). The body of the ship, described as 3.3 meters tall and 5.4 meters wide, had been built from red sandalwood and iron and was fitted with windows of glass or crystal. The mysterious characters of an unknown alphabet were found inscribed inside the vessel.



Aboard the drifting vessel was a finely dressed young woman with a pale face and red eyebrows and hair. She was estimated to be between 18 and 20 years old. Because she spoke an unfamiliar tongue, those that encountered her were unable to determine from whence she came. In her arms she clutched a plain wooden box that appeared to be of great value to her, as she would allow nobody to approach it.


The document shows a portion of the text found inside the ship (see left).


Other Edo-period documents describe variations of this mysterious encounter. Toen Shousetsu (1825), a book by Kyokutei Bakin (who is most famous for his 106-volume samurai epic Nansou Satomi Hakkenden) tells the story of the same encounter, referring to the strange vessel as the utsuro-fune (”hollow ship”). Another variation of this tale appears in Ume no Chiri (1844), penned by a relatively unknown author named Nagahashi Matajirou. A thorough analysis of these two variations of the story can be found in a translated article by Kazuo Tanaka titled “Did a Close Encounter of the Third Kind Occur on a Japanese Beach in 1803?”

for a "special effects expert", most of these videos are immediately recognizable as glaring fakes.

every old trick in the book is used: from UFOS swung on thin wires to UFOS glued to large glass plates. Even the old trick of the hanging foreground miniature is sometimes used. And if the old Soviet film was SHOT on film why does it look so conspicuosly like it was shot on video? with all the blooming effects when the camera shoots into sunlight...? Of course with today's computer graphics ANY image can be made that is not distinguishable from the real mac coy. I think only a direct eyewitness would be credible. A Lufthansa airline pilot told me once in a straightforward way that UFO sightings happened regularly in the 60s to 70s. The pilots talked about it but more often than not did not report anything because it would be damaging to their reputation. Only when the aircraft was affected or damaged they would make a report.I have no reason to disbelieve him.
To believe in all this faked nonsense is really quite naive. On the other hand this does not mean the phenomenon itself does not exist.
Personally I believe that a totally alien creature that comes from a different evolution, a different biosphere outside this world could not even be properly SEEN by our brain. Seeing something is comparing it to something that elready exists as a pattern in the brain. A newborn baby does not see anything although the eyes and the brain are working. Two people facing a real alien would see two different things.
And to believe that aliens will automatically look like us is a cliché from STAR TREK.

But its fun to watch nevertheless!

That is a very interesting point about how we would percieve an alien. In looking into this matter recently (meaning I was on the web a lot) it seemed suspecious to me that there was SO MUCH info about gray and reptilian aliens and not much about any other types. It seems hard to believe that aliens exist but only in such a limited array of forms.

I kind of like to think of "spiritual beings" rather than "aliens." At least there's more wiggle room there

the thing you mentioned comes up over and over again in related literature.
Ancient people reported "fiery chariots", 19th century observers saw "zeppelins" or "balloons".
We see Flying saucers because some of the first (fake) pictures used saucer-shaped discs. I always laugh at the Adamski Saucer because it's so obviously a coleman lantern lampshade.
Ray Harryhausen has told me about his research into the matter when he wanted to do "Earth vs the Flying saucers". He contacted several UFO "contactees" among them Adamski. he found him somewhat delusional to say the least. He was building a brick wall in his garden, Ray said. "for me that was a rather mundane occupation for somebody in touch with extraterrestrials".

I see this as a mass phenomenon showing the great spiritual void we live in. The so called "American Way of Life" is extremely narrow minded and ultimately empty. We may fill our stomachs but the brain department lacks something. Religion has gone out of our lives and so we cling to something else for our beliefs.

I think the real question is whether they are peaceful or not, and i think we will find out soon the answer to that question. It has never been confirmed but a big comet like object was heading towards our planet some time ago and as it came close it broke into five smaller objects that are still orbiting the earth. Observation maybe ?

I think most of them are. If they had any intention of wiping us out or hurting us they would have done it by now or in the past. I would imagine they would be just like humans. Some factions friendly some factions not. I hate sharks but would never hurt one. Even though they kill people, as a society we ensure they're survival. Maybe its something like that.

I wonder if people who believe UFOs are actually spaceships have ever wondered why there are no unambiguous photos or any material evidence available?

There are supposedly hundreds of thousands of tales of people coming into contact with aliens but all the stories just sound like fairy tales. No hard evidence for any of them.

When someone produces a picture of a fuzzy light bouncing around in the sky the skeptics say it is just a picture of a fuzzy light, it could be anything, and as such doesn’t prove anything. And of course they are correct.

But when someone produces a nice clear picture of a UFO the skeptics say the picture is too clear and sharp therefore it must be a fake. And of course there is no way to convince the die-hard skeptic that they might be wrong.

The sightings, abductions and encounters are so numerous that we can't ignore them and say that the whole thing is just imagination. That would be stupid. The phenomenon does exist, but the questions are: what is it and what is the agenda? Are they really aliens, or are they just "demonic forces" as Christians say? Or maybe secret government aircraft which we are not supposed to know too much about? Inter-dimensional beings? Perhaps a mix of it all? The cover up on this subject is enormous. It is definitely not meant that the truth should be known..

Nicely said , but even if skeptics always try to demolish this idea we cannot ignore the fact that many sightings around the world were very similar. People that don't have anything in common described very similar UFO's. Even the abductions (some of them of course) were described in detail an very similar, there must be something true to all of this. I cannot believe that so many people just do it for the publicity.

Yeah, there are many other facts as well that skeptics need to consider, such as the sheer magnitude of the universe. Unlike digital pictures and clips, statiastical probability of an outcome or event with a known quantity cant be faked or made up.

Not only does other intelligent life exist, but so do dinosaurs, cavemen and entire earth-like worlds that are completely empty. Any other intelligent life would realize that and as expected would build technology to leave their home planet and explore the countless number of other earth-like worlds. It explains why they dont stay here very long.
