Scientific Study of Consciousness-Related Physical Phenomena

    From: Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research

The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) program was established at Princeton University in 1979 by Robert G. Jahn, then Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, to pursue rigorous scientific study of the interaction of human consciousness with sensitive physical devices, systems, and processes common to contemporary engineering practice. Over the next 28 years, an interdisciplinary staff of engineers, physicists, psychologists, and humanists has conducted a comprehensive agenda of experiments and developing complementary theoretical models to enable better understanding of the role of consciousness in the establishment of physical reality.

On the accompanying menu of pages we have attempted to sketch the substance, spirit, and findings of this scholarly endeavor. In addition, a few conceptual interpretations are offered on their fundamental and practical implications for basic science, engineering applications, and individual and collective human culture. For more detailed description of the research agenda addressing human/machine interactions, remote perception phenomena, and the proposition of theoretical models that appropriately engage the subjective correlates of these empirical effects, see the Publications page, from which some fifty articles may be downloaded. Also available are a number of more philosophical essays that speculate about the broader cultural and spiritual ramifications.
In addition, a comprehensive overview of the PEAR program, including five lectures, a virtual tour of the laboratory, and many other features that capture the unique spirit and substance of the PEAR enterprise, is now available on a DVD/CD set entitled "The PEAR Proposition," produced by Strip Mind Media, and sponsored and distributed by the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL). Order on-line from the ICRL website.

    Princeton’s Pear Laboratory To Close

    For Immediate Release
    February 10, 2007

    PRINCETON’S PEAR LABORATORY TO CLOSE

The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) program at Princeton University, internationally renowned for its extensive study of the influence of the mind on physical reality, will be completing its agenda of basic research and closing its physical facilities at the end of February.

The purpose of the program, established in 1979 by Robert G. Jahn, an aerospace scientist who was then Dean of the university’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, was "to study the potential vulnerability of engineering devices and information processing systems to the anomalous influence of the consciousness of their human operators." The research has been funded by gifts from the late James S. McDonnell, patriarch of the McDonnell Douglas Aeorspace empire, the late Laurance Rockefeller, both Princeton alumni, and by numerous other philanthropic benefactors.

Jahn and his colleague, Brenda Dunne, a developmental psychologist from the University of Chicago who has served throughout as PEAR's laboratory manager, together with other members of their interdiciplinary research staff, have focused on two major areas of study: anomalous human/machine interactions, which addresses the effects of consciousness on random physical systems and processes; and remote perception, wherein people attempt to acquire information about distant locations and events. The emornous databases produced by PEAR provide clear evidence that human thought and emotion can produce measureable influences on physical reality. The researchers have also developed several theoretical models that attempt to accommodate the empirical results, which cannot be explained by any currently recognized scientific model.

"We have accomplished what we originally set out to do 28 years ago, namely to determine whether these effects are real and to identify their major correlates. There are still many important questions to be addressed that will require a coordinated interdisciplinary approach to the topic, but it is time for the next generation of scholars to take over." Jahn and Dunne said.

Their future plans involve oversight of the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL), a non-profit organization established in 1996 to promote quality research, educational initiatives, and practical applications of consciousness-related anomalies Redirect page. The members of ICRL represent some 20 countries and a broad range of professional backgrounds, and most have had some association with the PEAR program in the past. Jahn and Dunne currently serve as advisors to Psyleron, an emerging company in Bethlehem, PA,www.Psyleron.com, which produces a new line of state-of-the-art technology for human/machine studies, and to Ecognosis in Nashville, TN www.EcoGnosis.org, which investigates the effects of sound, color, and geometry on the functioning of human consciousness. They will both also continue to serve as Officers of the Society for Scientific Exploration: www.ScientificExploration.org.

More than 50 publications are available on the PEAR website , and Jahn and Dunne's textbook, Margins of Reality: The Role of Consciousness in the Physical World (Harcourt, 1987) has been in print for nearly 20 years. As part of their extensive archiving efforts, Jahn and Dunne have recently prepared a 150-page anthology of those PEAR publications pertinent to the burgeoning fields of complementary and alternative medicine, for a special issue of Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing , edited by Dr. Larry Dossey, which is currently in press. An educational DVD/CD set entitled The PEAR Proposition, produced by Strip Mind Media , offers a comprehensive overview history and accomplishments of the laboratory is also available, and can be obtained on-line from the ICRL website at International Consciousness Research Laboratories: Contributions.

Sounds interesting - I want it all and I want it now, but god man, I need to manifest an extra 8 hours in every day to catch up with all the info just on this site, never mind the crazy load of other things I have on the go!

                  International Consciousness Research Laboratories

I was doing a bit of research & discovered that after PEAR closed at Princeton University they shifted their base of operations to ICRL (International Consciousness Research Laboratories) . Looks like lots of interesting info there.

ICRL is an international, interdisciplinary, and inter-generational consortium of some 75 members, most of whom have been associated with the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) laboratory as interns or research collaborators over its thirty-year history. Our goal is to extend the work of PEAR into a broader range of inquiry; to encourage a new generation of deeply creative investigators to expand the boundaries of scientific understanding; and to strengthen the foundations of science by reclaiming its spiritual heritage. Ultimately, we seek to integrate the subjective and objective dimensions of human experience into a self-reflexive Science of the Subjective.

I was on ICRL's site just recently & used the above link & it was working ok. It looks like their domain name is now unregistered.I just followed the link from the Pear site to their site & just land on a page for domains now. Maybe they forgot to renew it.

Thanks for the link to the archives Aaron.

And ICRL's site works quite fine here
