  • OMG, Escher is alive!

Probably a trick, but a beautiful one...

A Real Perpetual Motion Machine, Or An Elaborate Hoax? [VIDEO]

  • #2
Actually if you look carefully at the construction of it you'll see an impossible scene. It's an optical illusion and well done. I caught it right away. Can you see it? Follow the vertical posts.

      animation

That's a really cool one. If you watch the water closely moving over the
"wood" it is animated. The whole thing is graphic animation. Someone has
      some talent.

Yes I'm sure it's an optical illusion based on M.C. Escher's drawings or paintings. In fact it is based on this M.C. Escher drawing http://filipspagnoli.files.wordpress...-waterfall.jpg

It is just slightly easier to see the impossibility of the construction in Escher's picture. The guy doing the video is indeed talented in setting this all up. It's possible part of it is done with animation as I can't see how the water would come back to the wheel but I think it could also be done totally with hidden effects and the right camera angle (you notice unlike most videos the camera is set in one spot and never is moved from start to finish - no different angles let alone any walk around shots of it ). The very construction of the device itself is a paradox and in itself is an illusion.

If you look at the water flowing over the wooden channel, when it
gets to the top at 0:45~0:47 you can see the water get jerky and then
suddenly speed up while the guy pouring the water is very smooth in
his motion - you can see that it is computer animated water moving
              over the wood.

I'm guessing he is pouring the water directly into a bowl on the floor
and the entire setup is overlayed on top of that. But anyone can
see at that time line 0:45~0:47 what I'm talking about.

                It's Real!

The water is blue, and this is a sign of copper sulfate. The ramp has a magnetic field applied to it and an electrical current flowing from its one side to the other (magnets underneath the ramp). Here's a video showing the exact same technique to get water to flow uphill. The water being jerking around the 45 second mark is probably due to a combination of the surface tension of the water, pixelation, and video compression. The wheel itself looks like it could be a computer animation, but watching it in full screen doesn't look as fake (there's a miter saw in the video, so he more than likely built the appartus, instead of animating it). This video shows the same basic principal using a conducting rod instead of the copper sulfated water (homopolar motor). Here's a much better demonstration of the Laplace Rail. IMO, the video is 100% real. If I ever have a jury trial, I pray none of you guys are the prosecuting attorney, the judge, or someone sitting on the jury. You guys just convicted an innocence man due to a lack of understanding and proper investigation.

And your investigation is a "proper investigation"?

Get real, you are looking at a VIDEO and have about as much evidence
to determine it is a real demo as anyone else has in determining it is fake.

Even if it is real, your self-claimed "proper investigation" never proved it.

The only thing your investigation proves is that you are simply speculating
like everyone else in this thread. So don't try to tell us we have a lack
of understanding on something that you have no way of knowing yourself
unless you are standing in that room with him while he reveals everything
                  to you.

And the rude comment about hoping we aren't an attorney, judge or jury
makes absolutely NO sense. Maybe you didn't see the title of the video,

The bottom line is, water can flow up hill without it being an illusion. This is already a proven fact in physics. No magic involved. Sorry you are dissappointed. I'm also sorry you are so easily offended. Why would you take the jury comment personally? Because you have a different opinion than I do? You're just pissed off because I explained how it could be real, after you were so sure it was a fake. I said, "IMO, the video is 100% real". IMO = In my opinion. You conviently overlooked "IMO". The jury comment was an analogy that obviously went over your head, thus it made no sense to you. You're offended by something that makes no sense to you? I'm at a loss for words on that, but it pretty much speaks for itself though. Aaron, Don't let your Joy be so easily stolen, especially when there was no intent to do so. With whatever measure you judge with, you'll be judged according to that same measure. If you judge harshly, then you'll be judged harshly. IMO, I think you were too quick to judge my words.

No, I did not conveniently overlook your little "IMO". Your logic is grossly
flawed and your insults are unwelcome. Your original post was insulting
and in this post, you multiply your insults 4-5 times.

Disappointing to find water can run uphill? You're really high on yourself.
Your ability to understand fine distinctions in what someone is saying
is lacking - seeing that you're putting words into my mouth of what
I am disappointed in or not. If you deduced that from what I posted,
then I'd have to say you are seriously unable to connect with what
                      you are reading.

I think it is actually a pretty cool demo, the video you posted, but my
disappointment is not in learning about that - it is in the fact that you seem
to be unable to post your own opinion without degrading someone else.

142857 posted that it wasn't animated to counter my initial statement
but he/she didn't seem to have the need to insult me. I guess some
people just have a different level of integrity and ethics.

But I do have to say that if you haven't noticed that the concept
of the structure is based on a famous Escher drawing and is physically
impossible to create in three dimensions, then I might suggest you wipe
off your monitor because I think it might need some cleaning. Did
                      someone say "proper investigation"?

It is common for some people to accuse others of just being mad because
of such and such but that is usually misdirection to take the attention
                      away from one's self.

And your jury comment - I haven't seen any comments
here that could possibly go over anyone's head so don't flatter yourself.
I mention that comment to make a point.

If there is anything you should be at a loss of words for, it should be
for your lack of ability to read into someone by what they write because
you have literally failed logically and in principle on this matter with
what I wrote almost half a dozen times.

Here - I'll post one possibility of how the video is filming something real
but has nothing to do with water rolling up hill - but maybe you're just
going to be mad because you think I'm mad by seeing how you think
it is possible and here I am showing another way it is possible - don't
                      get a short circuit now.

That water could be real if the path the water is taking is actually
all flat on the ground and the point he is pouring it into is just slightly
raised compared to the end. And all the vertical wood is overlaid computer
graphics to give the impression that the water is going up hill.

142857 already said it: forced perspective. This is ONE of my
                      interpretations of that.

If the water isn't animated, the wheel most likely is and the difference
in height between the part he is pouring the water into and the end where
the water appears to be at it's highest point is probably only a few
milimeters difference. In reality, the part that looks the highest is actually
probably a few milimeters lower than the part that looks the lowest.

Anyway, don't get your panties in a bunch as they say. Just post your
opinion but leave me out of it. I generally enjoy reading some of your
posts and I hope to continue you to.

                      IMO
                      Sincerely,

                          Aaron,

I hope you feel better after all of that. I'll respect your opinions even though I think your taking things out-of-context or making things bigger than should be. No hard feelings here.

                          @All,

One can see the illusion in the image easily, but I see no illusion in the video. I truly think the video is real and isn't a graphic animation or illusion of any kind. I considered all of the responses saying the video is a fake, but I wasn't even slightly convinced by any of those arguments. Below are my arguments for it being real. If this doesn't convince anyone of it possibly being real, then no big deal.

                          1) Why is the water blue? Copper sulfate, or just for better visibility?
                          2) Why does he mix the water solution prior to pouring it into the contraption? Just for show, or for another purpose?
                          3) Why the miter saw in the video? Just for show, or was it used in building the contraption?
                          4) Would it be easier to build a working model, than to animate or fake the whole thing? I think it would be easier to build a working model.
                          5) I posted several videos and references explaining how it can be done without any illusions (I tried to back my opinion up to give it more weight).

Now, to answer the question from the title of the video, IMO (which means nothing). Is it a real perpetual motion machine? No. Is it an elaborate hoax? No.
