  • Guatemalan Sinkhole

On May 31, a massive "sinkhole" opened up at a street intersection in Guatemala City, swallowing an entire building and at least two pedestrians. The hole is said to be about 60 feet in diameter, and at least 300 feet deep. I have seen sinkhole photos before, but never anything like this. Sinkholes normally occur in paved over areas where water cannot penetrate to the ground below, such as parking lots and roads, but usually causes far less damage than this one. Is this really a "sinkhole," or could it be something else? Just seems too massive, and too concentric, and you can't even see the bottom. Any guesses?

It is believed that there is a river below and with the added rain that they had, the river eroded from below in a vortex type action.

This looks like a bore hole to me. These are usually much smaller in diameter but go down indefinitely. Some people believe these bore holes are caused by long term resident aliens who live unseen in caverns deep underground. Russia has expressed some concern over bore holes discovered in unexplored regions of Siberia.

...while a more scientific explanation might be that the land right below the "solid" ground (where it used to be) was composed of volcanic ash, which gave way / got washed off by the underground water, and poof, big hole in the ground.

I wonder if you have to have insurance for that, like flood insurance or something.

              LOL

I just hope nobody got hurt...

Lots of land in various parts of the earth has really nothing under it. like living on a bread crust so to speak, there are large caves, underground waterways, etc.
Maybe they should do some RF soundings in these places to find other weak spots before they cause issues.

Yeah, but that would expose all the remains of the ancient civilizations, the tunnel systems connecting continents and what not, and you know we can't have none of that.

Not quite sure how the insurance companies will handle these incidents, but all insurance policies give the companies a way out by stating that the insurance does not cover damage caused by "Act of war, insurrection, or act of God." That pretty well has them covered for any eventuality.
