  • New member with tyre/plastic to oil project

Hi iam a new member from northern ireland needing educated on pyrolysis. I have built a reactor and condensing system. I am willing to give my limited knowledge on turning waste tyres or plastic into oil. I have a 200L compressor tank set up as my reactor with a removable lid.. I place this inside steel barrels with a house boiler and burner at the bottom all wrapped in heat insulation.. Then i have a 3 inch pipe running out the top slopped down for about 10 foot into the bottom of another steel barrel then a 1 inch pipe out the top into a bubbler and burn any left gases. I heat it between 300-500 degree..I have tried tyres and tubes so far with not great results- about 4 litres of really smelly fuel from about 7 car tyres. I would like to used the oil i produce to run the system but iam using more to heat it than i produce. Do i need a catalyst? If so how do i go about that? I know nothing about catalysts i just seen people on youtube use them. Also would i be better using plastic than tyres? I would appreciate advice and information and ideas. I will post photos of my project soon. Thankyou everyone in advance for you time an effort. Daniel

    Plastic-to-oil

Plastic to oil (diesel) conversion is the best way to go. Tires are a nasty lot to try and do anything with. There are all kinds of sophisticated technologies that will do the former.

North Korea has the technology in this area because the oil conglomerates have more or less suppressed this very efficient technology everywhere else that I know of. An entire port in NK is devoted almost entirely to receiving waste plastic (China is the #1 importer of waste plastic, mostly bottles). The technology is quite sophisticated and efficient. The developer of the process is an American (Dr. John Hay) who ended up working for China. The North Koreans produce large quantities of diesel this way, since this relieves China from having to gift them the oil which they need, and which China needs even more. China uses the plastic bottles mostly for textile manufacture. Most of the West's waste bottles -- at least the ones collected near the coasts (interior bottles are too expensive to truck to a port) -- are exported to China in 40' containers.

Then there's algae-to-oil technology, which was developed in Hawaii, but this too has been suppressed, bought out, or whatever by the petroleum interests. Even waste oils can be converted to diesel -- like from commercial kitchens and so forth. But the plastic-to-oil refineries are wonderfully productive, and they rid our landscapes and landfills of the billions of discarded plastic bottles.

I've forgotten more about all this than I ever knew, as I was in this technology business some years ago. Of course it's all very hush-hush now. Artificial (oil) scarcity is the name of that game -- to keep the price of oil and gas way up. The same thing is being done to the coal industry here in the U.S. The big oil interests don't like competition from anybody, nor do they tolerate it.

John D. Rockefeller used to say "competition is a sin." I'm paying $3.69 a gallon for petrol; I bet you're paying twice that. What a crock! (The pipes are calling...)

Thank you tomh for the info i will try plastic next. can anyone advise on what plastics is best or what plastic not to use if any? i have trouble sealing the lid on my retort i am using fire rope for stoves and it leaks when the temperature gets high.. has anyone any idea on how to seal the retort lid better that can be removed easy.. the fire rope breaks up after every use.

can i add my own photos to this forum?

      thanks

        PET bottles

hi all, this make more tipe or plastic inside of reaktor
        my question is:
1-what happen if make in reaktor PET bottles?
        2-what is esactly PVC?
        some esample of PVC?
i see this video in you tube this mix all plastic, and i see other video, to make inside PET bottles and say to make diesel.
        thanks

As you know plastic is made from oil. PET (poly-ethylene terepthalate), used to make plastic drinking bottles, can certainly be used for oil conversion, as can PVC (poly-vinyl choride), and most other plastics, simply because they are made from oil. PVC is great for certain things, like for use in bottles containing certain chemicals. Hair products are often made with PVC. HDPE (high density) is likewise used in different ways for containment of other chemicals. ABS is used in cars for bumpers, PVC is also good for plastic fencing. PET is used almost exclusively for drinking bottles and in textiles because of its properties. When melted it stretches wonderfully like chewing gums.

But each type of plastic has a different melting point and other properties, so you need to segregate each to plastic and then adjust your plant process calibrations for each plastic accordingly. Now the process used in North Korean plastic-to-oil refineries probably costs a few million dollars to construct, but once its up and running, it's pretty sweet. Cheaper countertop machines have been developed, which is probably the direction you want to go -- unless you have lots of money for a high-capacity pyrolysis plant. One such machine was developed by a guy in Japan. Watch the video at:

Larger plants are also on the market, like this one:
