  • Home made batteries

    Hi guys,

Been out of the experimenting for ages, but I now have some free time, and would love to get back into chemistry cos it used to be my favourite subject when I was a youth. My goal is to create a great home made battery, and to try lots of different electrodes/electrolytes (which are fairly easy to get hold of), in all sorts of configurations. In addition to ordinary batteries, I'd like to have a go with home made rechargeables, and with Earth batteries...and perhaps some other ones if there are some good suggestions. Here is my first attempt, with what I had handy. Magnesium, Graphite, and drain cleaner. I manage to get LEDs, neons, and even a 4W CFL tube (just), but this is with the help of my flyback oscillator (like an exciter circuit, but no resistor, and uses a darlington pair arrangement of TIP 31C). 1.86V and 15-20mA with no load. I thought this was great with no thought of design - just chuck the metals in the drain cleaner. With a lot of improvements, could be much better.

I have found a couple of people on youtube who do great videos on this topic. Here is a guy who helps you make your own graphene, if you are feeling like trying some a bit exotic. I fancy making the Nickel Hydroxide, as I gather that its essential for the old Ni Fe batteries that Edison developed. I'll try and make some soon. Anyway, here are some great links if anyone is also into battery stuff.

    Who loves batteries too?

    Seth,

You may be just the guy we have been hoping for.....
(I was tempted to say "Help us Obiwan, you are our only hope"....but nahhh and it sounded more like "These are not the droids you are looking for"
Forgive the Star Wars references...I'm old.)

If you look over on the 3BGS thread:
    http://www.energeticforum.com/renewa...ng-system.html

We have a system that uses a "bad" battery in our very SIMPLE circuit. This setup puts out continuous, almost unlimited power, right up to the point where the "bad" battery charges beyond a certain point, and then it quits working. Sometimes this effect lasts for minutes, for hours, a few days, or even a couple weeks, depending on the "bad" battery. We need someone who can put together this simple setup (two good batteries and a brushed DC motor) and come up with batteries to test in the third position. Someone like YOU, who is interested in developing different types of batteries, and who would't mind trying them in the 3BGS setup. I would love to do this, but I am NOT a chemist and have no idea where to begin. If you would be willing to give this a shot, let me know.

      unlimited power

But it is limited and it's not continuous. The battery keeps changing.
I have some old homemade cells I'm gonna try.

Sounds great guys! Thanks for the replies. I'll be trying some other electrodes today, and as long as I improve on my first volts and amps, I will make a video, and put it up.

I'm waiting for some chemicals which I've ordered to arrive. Most of my first tries will be with Magnesium cos I have loads of it left over from a previous project. But Nickel and Iron will be tested in future too.

        Good Luck!!
