The Benefits of Magnesium

Many people today do not have a sufficient level of minerals in their body, particularly magnesium. In fact, it is cited that up to 65% of Americans are magnesium deficient (Life Extension Magazine)

If you are having health challenges and can't afford or can't get the Asea redox yet from Aaron or Pamela you may find the site below helpful. (Not saying that it will produce the same results as drinking Asea) but as you will see it does have potentially many benefits.

It apparently is important to get the right type of magnesium though. This site bases its information from the use of "Natural Calm" magnesium powder.

A few benefits mentioned :

Aggressive Behavior
Magnesium deprivation induced interspecific aggressive behaviour in rats undoubtedly attributable to magnesium deficiency since magnesium chloride, by correcting magnesium deficiency, suppressed it.(Bac, P., et al.)

Angina
Angina (chest pains) is caused by a spasm in coronary arteries (the arteries that supply blood to the heart). This spasm is caused by magnesium deficiency and water-soluble magnesium is highly beneficial for this condition.

Anxiety
Sherry Rogers, M.D., in International Medicine World Report in 1992, estimated that 80 percent of the population is deficient in magnesium. Rogers went on to say that magnesium deficiency is prevalent in psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, agitation and panic attacks.

Asthma
Asthma is a condition where the bronchial passages go into spasm and interfere with normal breathing. Magnesium comes to the rescue by relaxing the bronchial muscles. Studies have shown that intravenous magnesium administered to asthmatics resulted in rapid improvement in shortness of breath and wheezing. Often it stopped an attack cold. Magnesium seems to make a major difference for asthmatics. The drinkable form is the next best thing and will assimilate very quickly, especially if drunk hot. Magnesium's ability to stop asthma attacks proves its vital role as an essential nutrient for asthmatics.

Backaches, Back Pain
Magnesium can relieve back pain in several different ways. (1) Magnesium helps kidney function. Kidney stress is one of the causes of back pain. (2) Magnesium helps relax the muscles. Muscle tension is another reason for back problems. Magnesium also helps the assimilation of calcium, which could allow bones to heal themselves.

Bone Alignment, Bones going out of Alignment
When magnesium is too low, this will cause the nervous system to be out of balance. This, in turn, will keep muscles tight and prevent them from staying in a relaxed condition. Magnesium restores balance to the nerves as well as the muscles, and thus makes it possible for chiropractic adjustments to last longer and be more effective.

Constipation
Magnesium is very helpful in providing relief from constipation. High amounts of magnesium have always been found to bring relief. In fact, the only time when water-soluble magnesium didn't relieve this condition was when not enough of it was taken. Constipation, of course, beyond its emergency address, should eventually be traced back to its underlying causes and handled accordingly. Yet magnesium is the one quick solution that never fails to work when immediate relief is needed.

See The Magnesium Website for the complete A-Z list & much more info

During my research I have come across 2 other low cost solutions which are also very beneficial to health, which I will post in separate threads.

Love & Blessings,
Sharyn

Sharyn thank you so much i know some one who suffers from anxiety, agitation and panic attacks. I will test her for magnesium and report.Thank you please keep them coming

Here are my suggestions for it in your diet

MESQUITE MEAL used as a staple food for centuries by desert
dwellers. High protein, with good quantities of calcium, magnesium,
potassium, iron and zinc, lots of amino acid lysine with a sweet rich
molasses-like flavor and a hint of caramel. Blends well into smoothies,
especially those made with raw cacao and maca.

Go easy on Raw Cacao, treat it like a drug! (its got good but BAD in it also)

MAGNESIUM. Calcium cannot be absorbed or utilized by the body without magnesium, and almost everyone today is dangerously low in magnesium. As a matter of fact, people are SO low in magnesium, that the first thing paramedics do when someone has a heart attack, is inject magnesium.
SO, you could take 1 teaspoon of magnesium three times a day.

check out a product called Natural Calm, which is Magnesium Citrate, a white
powder, you can just put it in some water.

CUCUMBER-One of the most healing fruits on Earth. Yes, it is a fruit. Really good for flushing kidneys, detoxifying the system, cleansing the bowels,
digestive health, contains an enzyme that dissolves tapeworms, and has
lots of calcium, magnesium, sulfur (beauty mineral) along with
Vitamins E and C. Cucumber juice does wonders for complexion. Buy
organic and eat the SKINS TOO, which are very high in silica, minerals
and enzymes good for skin and hair.

PUMPKIN SEEDS
High protein, zinc, magnesium, B Vitamins, tryptophan. Good for
treating heart disease, prostate issues, male virility and helps remove
intestinal worms (roundworms, pinworms). Especially good for
tapeworms. Eat a handful of raw pumpkin seeds 2 x day on an empty
stomach. Even more effective (and great tasting) when mixed with
garlic.

Other for Mag =CHIA SEEDS

Ash & Mad nate

Ash,

Those foods look like good sources. The magnesium that you mention is the same one - "Natural Calm Magnesium Powder" that is recommended on the Magnesium website.

Spinach is also a good source of magnesium. I guess the limiting factor is the soil. A lot of our soil nowadays, as you are aware, is mineral deficient . So it doesn't necessarily follow that by eating these foods we will be getting enough magnesium in our diet.

The statisitcs certainly seem to confirm that.

Madnate there is a difference between magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate.

The typical western diet provides so little magnesium that nutrition expert and author Dr. Carolyn Dean recommends supplementing with this important mineral. Currently, magnesium oxide and magnesium citrate are the most widely available forms of magnesium.
  1. Mineral Form
    • Magnesium oxide is an inorganic salt, whereas magnesium citrate is an organic salt chelate.
    Multiple Formulas
    • Many multiple vitamin plus mineral formulas contain magnesium oxide. At Swanson Health Products, the top ten products in this category all provide magnesium oxide. Multiple formulas rarely provide magnesium citrate.
    Absorption
    • In her book "The Magnesium Miracle," Dean estimates that the body digests and absorbs about 4% of magnesium oxide, which means the body will only use 12 mg from 300 mg of elemental magnesium oxide. Magnesium citrate boasts a much higher bioavailability rate, perhaps as much as 50% of the elemental magnesium.
    Laxative Effect
    • Since the body absorbs so little of magnesium oxide, the other 96% stays in the intestines and acts as a laxative. On the other hand, cells take up more of the mineral from magnesium citrate, leaving behind less of it in the intestines to stimulate the bowels.
    Cost
    • Supplement developers frequently choose magnesium oxide for multiple formulas because of the low cost of procuring it. Binding magnesium to citric acid drives up the cost of magnesium citrate.

I'll post some more info soon, I've got to run now.

The Magnesium Miracle - Carolyn Dean MD

The Magnesium Miracle http://drcarolyndean.com/magnesium_miracle/
Carolyn Dean MD ND

Dr. Carolyn Dean, ďThe Magnesium QueenĒ working at her home office in Maui.

Every day I hear another magnesium success storyÖ
My editor for the UK edition of The Miracle of Magnesium told me that as soon as she read my manuscript she gave magnesium to a friend who had severe muscle cramps. Her friend had visited several doctors and nobody could diagnosis her condition or offer her relief. Magnesium helped her immediately.

My book agentís brother canít believe how much his energy has improved on magnesium and his wifeís menopausal symptoms are lifting since she began taking supplements.

And every day I also hear distressing stories about magnesium deficiency. Just today walking along the beach near my home I met an 80-year old gentleman who asked me to sit and talk. Julius said he used to walk up and down the beach like me but now his arthritis prevented him. But he said he only began having symptoms of arthritis after taking medication for slightly elevated cholesterol.

Instead of a diet and magnesium, his doctor immediately put him on a cholesterol-lowering drug. When he began developing pain, which was obviously from the drug, instead of stopping the drug and giving magnesium to lower cholesterol, to help detoxify the drug, and also lessen muscle cramps, his doctor gave him a strong pain medication. And then his ankles began to swell and Julius said his doctor gave him a diuretic!
And so the story goes, one drug causing symptoms that demand another drug. Thatís what doctors learn about in medical school: drugs. They donít learn about diet and nutrients, so it seems that all they know how to do is prescribe drugs. Julius said he was going to tell his doctor to change his cholesterol medication, which, by the way, in several years had only dropped his cholesterol of 205 to 185. I told him to go on a cholesterol-lowering diet and take magnesium. Even though Julius said he was mad about having to take the drugs and he wished he had been given a diet in the first place, Julius said he would have to ask his doctor before taking the magnesium. And my heart sank, because his doctor probably didnít learn about magnesium supplementation in medical school and would probably say itís unnecessary.

Doctors know potassium deficiency is a danger for people on diuretics but they donít acknowledge that magnesium is also flushed out in equal measure. Magnesium deficiency goes undiagnosed and unrecognized because until recently there was no accurate blood test for magnesium. Patients are warned to take potassium supplements or eat oranges and bananas, but no advice is given about magnesium. Magnesium is not as readily available as potassium; itís deficient in the soil and most fertilizers donít contain magnesium, so most foods are lacking. Also cooking and processing foods depletes magnesium. Itís found in whole grains, greens, nuts and seeds, but most people donít eat much, if any, of those foods.
And yet, for some reason doctors think that we get all our nutrients in our very SAD, Standard American Diet and they donít recognize the need for nutrient supplementation. It all stems back to a medical education that is funded by drug companies that have no vested interest in promoting nutrients. Vitamins and minerals canít be patented and are relatively inexpensive. My research for The Miracle of Magnesium reminded me that all the metabolic processes in the body, ALL OF THEM, depend on vitamins and minerals, which act as necessary co-factors. Magnesium itself is a co-factor and responsible for the function of 325 enzymes; is an absolute requirement for calcium to be incorporated into bone; keeps toxic chemicals out of the brain; dances with calcium to create nerve impulses and muscle impulses; keeps muscles relaxed, including the heart and blood vessels, and triggers dozens of health conditions if it is deficient.

The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for magnesium is between 350 and 400 milligrams per day, which is just enough to ward off outright deficiency. But for optimal health and for the twenty-two conditions that are triggered by magnesium deficiency, perhaps twice as much magnesium is needed. One of the highest sources of magnesium is kelp, but one tsp. only has about 30 milligrams. One tablespoon of almonds has 33 milligrams. Because we probably donít get nearly enough magnesium from out diet we have to investigate magnesium supplements.

I use several types of magnesium. However, I stopped using magnesium oxide in 2005 when I read a study that showed only 4 percent of the oxide form of magnesium is absorbed. Thatís why magnesium oxide is a great laxative but if you want to stock up on magnesium you need to use other forms. I use magnesium citrate and magnesium taurate and also spray on magnesium oil after a shower. Magnesium oil is supersaturated magnesium chloride and because itís used topically it doesnít cause a laxative effect. And I find it really does work. I seem to have a very high requirement for magnesium and to get enough by mouth I can have a laxative reactionóbut if I use magnesium oil, I only need to take half the amount of magnesium by mouth and therefore avoid loose stools.

You also have read labels when you buy magnesium products. For example a label may say magnesium taurate, or magnesium citrate, or magnesium glycinate, 500 milligrams, but when you look at the fine print on the back of the bottle you will notice the actual amount of magnesium is much less. The actual amount of magnesium in 500 mg of magnesium glycinate is 50 mg. Companies that make chelated minerals like magnesium glycinate and magnesium taurate claim that chelates are more readily absorbed. That may be the case, but how you tell is if they have less of a laxative effect.
The best way to tell if you are getting enough magnesium is the ďbowel testĒ. You know when you have too much magnesium when your stools become loose. This, in fact, may be a blessing for people with constipation and is one of the many ways magnesium deficiency manifests. But, if you are like me and still get a Charlie horse or a heart palpitation when you donít have enough magnesium, then reach for the magnesium oil.
The only contraindications to magnesium are caused in people with outright kidney failure, bowel obstruction, Myasthenia gravis, or heart block. Also, if you have a heart condition you may find that taking magnesium can lessen the need for heart medication and you should be under doctorís supervision to guide this process.

The following 22 medical areas that magnesium deficiency triggers or causes have all been scientifically proven. However, since the publication of The Miracle of Magnesium people have sent me magnesium success stories that go beyond the following list. Iíve been told that magnesium has caused skin to become smooth, gums to heal, and improvements in sexual response. In the next edition of my book Iíll present updated research on the ability of magnesium to lower cholesterol in the same way as statin drugs but without the side effects. There is also evidence that magnesium is important for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy. As I say in the book, if there you are able to only take one supplementómake sure itís magnesium!

The Magnesium Miracle - Part 2

Magnesium Deficiency Triggers or Causes
The Following Conditions:

  1. Anxiety and Panic attacks- Magnesium (Mg) normally keeps adrenal stress hormones under control.
  2. Asthma- Both histamine production and bronchial spasms increase with Mg deficiency.
  3. Blood clots- Mg has an important role to play in preventing blood clots and keeping the blood thin-much like aspirin but without the side effects.
  4. Bowel disease- Mg deficiency slows down the bowel causing constipation, which could lead to toxicity and malabsorption of nutrients, as well as colitis.
  5. Cystitis- Bladder spasms are worsened by Mg deficiency.
  6. Depression-Serotonin, which elevates moods, is dependent on Mg. A Mg-deficient brain is also more susceptible to allergens, foreign substances that can cause symptoms similar to mental illness.
  7. Detoxification- Mg is crucial for the removal of toxic substances and heavy metals such as aluminum and lead.
  8. Diabetes- Mg enhances insulin secretion, facilitating sugar metabolism. Without Mg insulin is not able to transfer glucose into cells. Glucose and insulin build up in the blood causing various types of tissue damage.
  9. Fatigue- Mg-deficient patients commonly experience fatigue because dozens of enzyme systems are under-functioning. An early symptom of Mg deficiency is frequently fatigue.
  10. Heart disease- Mg deficiency is common in people with heart disease. Mg is administered in hospitals for acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrhythmia. Like any other muscle, the heart muscle requires Mg. Mg is also used to treat angina, or chest pain.
  11. Hypertension- With insufficient Mg, spasm of blood vessels and high cholesterol occur, both of which lead to blood pressure problems.
  12. Hypoglycemia- Mg keeps insulin under control; without Mg episodes of low blood sugar can result.
  13. Insomnia- Sleep-regulating melatonin production is disturbed without sufficient Mg.
  14. Kidney Disease- Mg deficiency contributes to atherosclerotic kidney failure. Mg deficiency creates abnormal lipid levels and worsening blood sugar control in kidney transplant patients.
  15. Liver Disease leading to liver failure- Mg deficiency commonly occurs during liver transplantation.
  16. Migraine- Serotonin balance is Mg-dependent. Deficiency of serotonin can result in migraine headaches and depression.
  17. Musculoskeletal conditions- Fibrositis, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, eye twitches, cramps and chronic neck and back pain may be caused by Mg deficiency and can be relieved with Mg supplements.
  18. Nerve problems- Mg alleviates peripheral nerve disturbances throughout the whole body, such as migraines, muscle contractions, gastrointestinal spasms, and calf, foot and toe cramps. It is also used in treating central nervous symptoms of vertigo and confusion.
  19. Obstetrics and Gynecology- Mg prevents Premenstrual Syndrome; prevents dysmenorrhea (cramping pain during menses); is important in the treatment of infertility; and alleviates premature contractions, preeclampsia, and eclampsia in pregnancy. Intravenous Mg is given in obstetrical wards for pregnancy-induced hypertension and to lessen the risk of cerebral palsy and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Mg should be a required supplement for pregnant mothers.
  20. Osteoporosis- Use of calcium with Vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption without a balancing amount of Mg causes further Mg deficiency, which triggers a cascade of events leading to bone loss.
  21. Raynaudís Syndrome- Mg helps relax the spastic blood vessels that cause pain and numbness of the fingers.
  22. Tooth decay- Mg deficiency causes an unhealthy balance of phosphorus and calcium in saliva, which damages teeth. Material excerpted from Dean, Carolyn. The Miracle of Magnesium (2003 Ballantine Books: New York, NY), 2003. pp. 5-7.
A test for cellular magnesium called EXATEST is available at Magnesium Test: Intracellular Analysis for Heart Disease, A Fib, Arrhythmia, Stroke: EXA Test

Sharyn,
Thank you for this wonderful information. I was taking magnesium oxide with zinc and didn't really see the improvements I was looking for.

I live with a chain smoker that does not care about anyones health. The smoke had been beating me up and it got to the point where I was waking up with asthma attacks every night at 2-3am as the smoke made its way into the HVAC.

I picked up the natural calm powder and some magnesium citrate tablets about a week ago. There has been a noticeable improvement in my health over these past few days. I'm no longer waking up in the middle of the night with asthma attacks(I also installed activated carbon filters). It used to feel like there was a death grip on my lungs when I got within ten feet of the chain smoker. It's only been a few days with the magnesium citrate and my lungs aren't hurting as much when I'm close to the smoker. I have many of the symptoms listed and they seem to be improving.

Thank you soo much for creating this thread, it has improved my quality of life and will continue to do so in the future! I'm going to share this information with everyone I know!

Well, I don't remember where I read for the first time about magnesium's properties, but it's excellent supplement!!!

I suffered from a little bit of depression, after taking only the first dose of magnesium, I felt really energized!! After a few days, I felt that my hearth rythm improved, I feel more happy and I felt myself with more energy.

Actually I take magnesium carbonate 70%, magnesium chloride 15% and magnesium sulfate 15%. With aquarius. The results are still very good!!

Madnate, Ashweth & AetherScientist

I'm so pleased that this information has assisted you Madnate - great to hear of the health improvements you've noticed so far.

Thanks also for posting about your results Aether Scientist - it's good to know that when you discovered it, it helped with your mood & energy levels.

Ash, I don't know if you saw the other 2 threads I made but I also recommend you check them out if you haven't already seen them. They also have some excellent information with low cost for maximum health benefits.:

Himalayan Salt & Sole thread - "Sole is a powerfully charged combination of water and the 84 minerals ....... When water and Original Himalayan Crystal Saltô (OHCS) combine, the negative poles of the water molecules surround the positive ions in the salt and the negative ions in the salt are surrounded by the positive polarized particles of the water molecules.

This changes the geometric structure of the water and the salt, and creates something entirely new, a third dimension. The water no longer is water and the salt no longer salt. The elements have liberated themselves from their restrictions, given up their polarities by the resonant effects, and reached a higher form of energy."

Love & Blessings,

problems in the teeth

I have also some problems that conventional dentist haven't explained me in a convincent manner.

From the chilhood I suffer from teeth breaks, I mean that my teeth usually breaks in pieces. I have no pain, no infections, nothing. The only thing is sometimes, when I eat, I feel a piece of teeth and I have a little collection of them. I have 4 teeth completely broke, I only have the root and the other part doesn't exist.

When I was a children I took calcium in a lot of different forms: milk, supplements, seeds.... but it seems that the calcium doesn't works.
Could it be due to a lack of magnesium?

I believe it is highly likely, Aetherscientist, although you will still find a lot of literature saying that calcium is what is required.

Magnesium Oil

Thanks again for this info, Sharyn.

I was able to find magnesium oil at a good price from AllStarHealth.com - Discount Vitamins | Nutritional Supplements | Bodybuilding Supplements. I don't know if they ship outside of the US though. I get my spirulina from here at a great price also.

Allstar sells the 8oz bottles of magnesium oil for only $5.79 a bottle. From what I read on the site you provided, spraying the oil on your arms and legs is the most effective method of getting the magnesium to your cells.

Wow, that is an amazing price that you got the magnesium chloride oil for Pamela.

I bought some over here a while ago & a 100ml bottle (3.38ozs) cost me $20.00. It was for a brand made here in Australia. Mind you, it was the only brand available so I didn't have a whole lot of choice. Unfortunately, it seems that the US, thanks to the FDA, is unable to export a lot of vitamins / minerals overseas.

I think you can apply the oil wherever you like but one thing people need to be aware of is that magnesium apparently is quite effective in reducing high blood pressure naturally. So if anyone has low blood pressure they would need to take that into consideration & not apply it as liberally or as frequently.

Hope you find it beneficial.

Love & Blessings,
Sharyn

HI guys ... The health benefits of magnesium are very important and often go undiscussed. Magnesium is an extremely vital mineral and enzyme catalyst in the body. It is necessary for the utilization of carbohydrates, fats, protein, calcium, phosphorus and potassium... Thanks

The normal range for magnesium is set too low...both the bottom of the "normal" range and the top. The vast majority of the US population is truly magnesium deficient.

Ideally, getting a test called RBC or erthryocyte magnesium, will give you an idea of what is really getting to your cells (same goes for potassium). However, serum measurements are fairly good numbers to go on but you need to look at optimal, not normal. For those of you outside the US, I apologize in advance as I have no idea how to convert to your units of measurement.

First of all, the key is getting a doc to test magnesium. When a comprehensive metabolic profile is ordered, magnesium has to be added to it separately and almost never is. Everything I say from here on is aimed at someone with normal kidney function. It is almost impossible to overdose on oral magnesium because you will have massive diarrhea before you absorb enough to become toxic. If there are kidney problems or Addison's disease, that may no longer hold true.

The typical "normal" range for Mg++ is about 1.7 to 2.2mg/dL. A level of 1.7 is woefully inadequate. Optimal Mg levels are probably about 2.2 to 2.8. Symptoms of toxicity don't appear until at least 3.5. So, magnesium is extremely safe to supplement for most people. You simply titrate to bowel tolerance. Keep adding one tablet/capsule/day until you have diarrhea, then back off to the level that doesn't cause diarrhea. As your body becomes less deficient in Mg, the amount that causes diarrhea will decrease.

It is important to avoid Magnesium oxide or magnesium carbonate. These are highly irritating to the GI tract and will cause diarrhea before much actual Mg is absorbed. Mag citrate and glycinate are just a couple of examples or organic salts that are much more readily absorbed. Soaking in Epsom salts is also a good way to supplement Mg. Then there is Magnesium oil, which isn't really oil but super saturated magnesium chloride...this is intended to be applied topically. Epsom salts and magnesium oil will not irritate the GI tract and are good options if you have problems with loose bowels.

I look at Magnesium as almost a miracle supplement and one I wouldn't be without.
