How can we harness our unconscious?

People need to be on top of their game when mastering skills like playing a musical instrument or detecting a bomb.

But research suggests that our unconscious can be harnessed to help us excel.

Repeatedly playing a tricky piece of music obviously helps develop a familiarity with the bits that are most difficult.

But cellist Tania Lisboa, who’s also a researcher in the Centre for Performance Science at London’s Royal College of Music, says it also helps to send the trickier parts of a piece from her conscious to the unconscious part of her brain.

After hours of practice, a fluent musician’s brain stores how to play the piece in an area at the back of the brain called the cerebellum – literally “the little brain”.

Neuroscientist Prof Anil Seth, of Sussex University, says: “It has more brain cells than the rest of the brain put together.

“It helps to promote fluid movements.. So the conscious effort of learning how to bow a cello is moved from the cortical areas which are involved when it’s new or difficult over to the cerebellum, which is very good at producing unconscious fluent behaviour on demand.”

Music and defence may not appear to have much in common, but the unconscious can also help detect potential threats, whether it’s a suspicious person in a crowd or the presence of an improvised explosive device.

The unconscious brain is really good at spotting patterns – a skill which Paul Sajda at Colombia University in New York exploits – right at the boundary of the conscious/sub-conscious.

“I can flash 10 images a second and if one of those images has something out of the ordinary..that will essentially cause me to re-orient my brain to that image – but I’m not exactly aware of what that is.”

Brain activity is monitored whilst the analyst looks at images so that researchers can later see which images triggered reactions.

Earlier today I listened to a lecture related to this phenomena, stating that the unconcious mind concieves, the brain recieves and the concious mind percieves. The idea is that the 'higher self' is that of the (to us, physically) unconcious mind, the brain is the antenna and I guess that the brain in this respect must be divided into different functions, cerebellum the antenna part(?) and 'the rest' are mainly the working memory, the storage space for percieving bits of information. According to this lecture, the concious mind can't tell why something happens, it can only tell what happened. Much of this is conform with different odds and ends from metaphysics as well as other disciplines. Some trance mediums state that the contact enters from a point in the back of their head, which could point towards contact with the cerebellum (or not, this is hard to prove so just consider it as a thesis).

What's interesting is that the cerebellum are told to be 'in charge' of motoric coordination and balance. It seems like a rather simple task but learning a 'tricky piece of music' would also be one of motoric coordination. Keeping in touch with the 'higher self' would also be a task needing some coordination.

Why would we dispose more than half of our neurons to such a simple task as just motoric coordination and still do so badly compared to many animals with much greater gifts regarding their motoric senses but whom we doubt if they even are aware of where they are or who they are. We should have physical superpowers as a gift from such a motoric control unit, that is, if we understand it's capability correctly.

What if the animals we regard so low actually are liberated from the obstacle of an over-developed big brain, thus in much better contact with their unconcious? If not, how then explain some of their strong instincts with their less volymous brains, we should beat any animal at any time just with our right brainhalf? Are we suffering from a filter or information blocker they don't have in the same amount?

What if that mankind's so called progress only is an effect of the capability to store and handle percieved information? (Would such a statement even be contradictive to accepted science?)

What if that concious storage has done what most government and authority do sooner or later, forgot who it is supposed to serve, and how?

What if the term 'un-conciuos' are very unjust and should be changed to 'blocked concious' instead?
