  • Why "Love your neighbour as you love yourself" is misleading....

I heard someone quote this phrase from the bible, on the radio yesterday, and I was struck by what is wrong with it...

Most of us show less love, consideration, compassion and courtesy to ourselves than we show anyone else! If we were to love our neighbour as we love ouselves, we would show them no love at all!

I like to switch the phrase around: "Love yourself as you love your neighbour"

    In NYC?

What person does not love themself?

"The Golden Rule" Is to treat others as yourself. It and the Love of God are the major tenets of Christianity.
    "But ye shall receive power..."
    Acts 1:8

I think it's actually treat others as you would like them to treat you. Probably not a lot of that going around in NYC.

        Hi Wpage and ImBill

In my experience, if a person treats someone else badly, they are even harder on themselves - in one way or another... And they are most likely Completely unaware of that fact.

A person who is unkind to someone else, on closer inspection, will probably be self destructive either physically (they are unlikely to eat healthily and treat their body with respect and compassion); emotionally, mentally or financially. There will be at least one area (usually more) where they are hurting themselves without realising that's what they're doing.

But most of us, who are not deliberately mean to others, treat our loved ones (as well as strangers) with far more respect and compassion than we treat ourselves. When we go through a difficult time, many of us will critisize ourselves, or force ourselves to "get on with it", we will mentally, physically and emotionally tend to be hard on ourselves (as we've been conditioned to).... Whereas, when a loved one goes through the same difficult issue/s, we tend to treat them with love and compassion. Telling them to "take it easy", "get some rest", "is there anything I can do to help?" and so on. We comfort them. I believe that most of us very seldom show this concern for ourselves.

          Interesting post.

There does seem to be a presupposition in the scriptures that one does love oneself.

Here is the context of the statement "Love our neighbor as we love ourselves".

          Romans 13:9-10 (New International Version)

9 The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet," and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

As Odille pointed out, some parenting and social programming has been so destructive that many of us end up adults with subconscious programming of self-hate (or a lack of love/respect for oneself).

AND then there is the big ugly monster of Fear!

While I do not believe the scripture to be wrong, we certainly should love our neighbor and do them no harm, we may also need to reprogram our subconscious to love ourselves and to live in the Light that banishes fear from our lives.

Do you guys know much about the lifecycle of hard coral? One night a year, on a full moon in November, every single coral polyp on the Great Barrier Reef of the East coast of Australia takes part a massive spawning event that's been described as "the world's biggest underwater orgy." That description is just marketing trash to sell dive trips of course, but it's a concise and accurate description of what takes place. All of the corals execute this massive, synchronised ejection of reproductive material, eggs from the females and sperm from the males, into the water around them, where they mingle and fertilize. It looks like snow, falling upwards but underwater.

Fish gorge themselves but there's simply to much of this gloop for the fish to eat all of it. Fertilised eggs fall back to the reef, and begin a static life, anchored to the calcified remains of their ancestors, building massive, elaborate and diverse structures over very long periods of time. Staghorn corals build antler shaped colonies like the antlers of a buck. Brain corals form structures that look like a human brain. Now take the staghorn coral. There's two varieties around where I live, yellow and blue. The difference? The algea that the polyps cultivate on themselves for food. One type of algea is blue, the other type is yellow. The coral itself is the same thing. They're farmers, who live their entire lives out in the one place, growing, nurturing and harvesting a sustinance crop. Then they die, and their remains form a crust of calicium, a bed for a new farm for a new farmer.

I wonder if each single one of the trillions of coral polyps on the Great Barrier Reef sees itself, in it's own miniscule proto-consciousness, to be a seperate entity, an individual. I wonder if the corals give thought to their place in the grand scheme, if they wonder why they're here, what that huge, bipedal thing with the big googley eyes is, if it's an alien or a god, or if all they worry about is cultivating more algea than the polyp beside them. I wonder if it thinks I, as the monolithic bipedal divinity at the center of it's spiritual life, expect that it to be good or else, to be kind to others or else. I wish I could tell every single polyp of coral I see every time I visit the reef, "you're a part of something much more grand and beautiful than you know. I don't judge you, I think you're beautiful, not just as an individual, but as a part of a unified whole." But being simple farmers, worried more about having an abundence of algea than anything else, they probably wouldn't understand. Besides, I don't speak staghorn.

Since I can't tell the coral polyps that, I'll just settle for telling you guys this. Love your neighbor because loving your neighbor means loving the same thing that you, in the grand scheme of things, are a part of. Did you know the Great Barrier Reef is described by some people as the only living entity you can see from space? And that it is even considered to be a single entity, from our perspective, is something that deserves a pondering. Each polyp, each single coral farmer, who's works give the corals it's colour, who's deaths give the polyps that come after it a home, and the coral itself a structure, is as each man and woman on the face of the earth. With something as simple and elegent as a change in perspective, it becomes obvious that we to are simply the polyps in the amorphorous and incredibly beautiful reef of humanity. Love thy neighbor as thyself isn't an instruction to be at least as nice to the other guy as you are to yourself, it's a subtle hint from someone who had a higher understanding that thy neighbor is thyself. When you show them love, kindness, humility, courtesy, generosity or charity, you're expressing that intent to the entire entity of collective consciousness and the great seething biomass of which we are all an integral, impermenant part. At a higher level again, you're expressing that intent and those feelings to the entire universe of which you are also an integral part, a universe which some of us know full well is connected at a quantum level into a single unified entity anyway. And that's just a mechanistic view of it, don't get me started on the spiritual importance of this message or we'll all be here writing and reading for months.

Don't worry too much about having an abundence of love. Worry about giving love in abundence, because then you'll be resonating in harmonic ratio with abundence of love, and so that's exactly what you'll attract back to yourself... in most cases. And it will also be rather nice for all of the people around you in your life, too. You know, thy neighbors.

              Nathan,

              I liked your post.

It inspired me to find this particular quote.

                Wow!

                Nathan,
(that is my son's name too, but he is only nine right now) I just loved what you wrote... It is sooo true, how we separate ourselves from our neighbors, who are in fact just a part of us.

Unfortunately, in society dualism is taught and believed, and when you take a dualistic approach to life then you can look in the mirror and say I am ugly, and he is ugly too!

When you know you are connected to God then you look in the mirror and see a part of God/Universe whatever you prefer to call it, and so therefore you have to be beautiful cause God is within you... He is the stuff in between the matter, and that connects us with our neighbors and everyone in the world.

It is a different perspective completely, but it starts with falling in love with oneself, and to do so you have to reopen the sacred heart and allow all the love within oneself to flow out. No not everyone loves themselves, as a matter of fact they are so separated from LOVE that they love nothing, and no one. Love is God and until you reconnect with LOVE then you can not love anyone or anything. It all has to do with separation and dualism. The belief that God is somewhere out there not right here within me! Reconnect with LOVE and you will fall in love with yourself and naturally love everyone around you.

                Blessings Sallyjane

Hi folks, have to comment here.It is all well and good to find ones center and what some call our natural connection to our source, however most people are still living within the systems that have been created for the very purpose of turning people away from sharing, loving, compassion and instead these systems cultivate competition, lack, jealousy, ignorance, etc..
So while certainly these systems offer a challenge and learning experience to show what works for the good of all and what does not, at some point one realizes that inner peace is one thing, but matters of finances or any other material creation are not the same thing. Let me give an example, some say that a soul can have a lack mentality where by just having thoughts that one doesnt have enough is the cause of their lack. The truth is we have been living in a casino world with a continual engineered cycle of winners and losers and of course the engineers are the ones who never lose. Now you tell me folks, are the systems of this world as they are ever going to represent the good of all and nurture all souls spiritual growth. Some may already be aware of the plans that the dark ones have been carrying out against humanity and earth and let me say that if they were allowed to bring those plans forward fully most of us would not be here today and if we were very little spiritual growth can be had in a complete prison state, and that was and still is the goal of there hopeless plans, to stifle spiritual advancement which means the end of there control over us.
                  peace love light

Let me add one thing. All i'm trying to do is point out that spirituality should be balanced and grounded with respect to the physical plane. If for whatever reason, engineered or not, that in a room there is only one apple and 10 people, well with the state of most peoples consciousness I doubt it would be a harmonious experience for those 10 people and until these systems that provide for basic necessities are reformed to represent the good of all, little will change unless an awaking of the people forces the issue.

                      Another point of veiw

This is something that I am learning, and finding to be true. There are two different types of economies (for a lack of a better way to put it). We have a choice of which one we want to participate in.

The first economy is what I refer to as the Structural Economy and is part of the dualistic world. If you choose to participate in this one, then you will experience lack and limits to what you can do.

The second economy is what I call the spiritual economy and it is built on the POWER of LOVE. In order to choose this economy you have to first learn to live by LOVE and follow your heart and not the egoic mind. When you deal with this economy and there are ten people in a room and only one apple you won't be concerned by the way it looks. You will let the other nine fight for the apple and you will look around and notice the open door and walk through it to a room with a bushel of apples, or even better bushels of all the foods you need to eat. For some reason though the other nine will not be able to see that door even if you walk back through it and invite in for a feast.

The secret to seeing these doors in our life is to first quiet ourselves, and then to choose to look at what we love or where our passions lie. Then we need to focus on Love and Gratitude for long periods of time (like all day long, everyday). See ourselves for who we are and stop trying to fit into the worlds boxes they try to put around us. Then we just need to trust in the Universe/God and let him guide us down that road towards our true purpose in life.

As long as you only see the one apple in the room you will never see the doors. The truth is that we walk past so many of these doors every day, and never see them. People ask me how I manifest everything in my life clear down to my X-husband buying me a house... I meditate and focus on Love and Gratitude, and let the Universe guide my feet and I wait quietly basking in the Love and Gratitude. Blessings abound me because I do this.

When I get caught up in the "REAL WORLD" and I step back on to that treadmill and start running with all the other mice, is when I see lack in my life and I stop seeing all the open doors. This has been a hard one for me up until yesterday. I had to stop take some time to just meditate and bask in the LOVE of the Universe/God, and when I did that I started to see the next open door. I started to see my Free Spirit living in abundance. Then I called up and was talking to my X who told me that my house would probably be available sooner.

Inhale through the nose Exhale through the mouth... Inhale Love, exhale limitation and fear. Quiet the heart and just listen and it will tell you where to go next.

                      Blessings Sallyjane

Hi zartgirl, thanks for the reply. I am familiar with what you speak, however this construct or other world as far as I am aware is not fully online yet but as you say there is support to some degree now and when fully online there will be no lack or harm to those operating in the new dimension. Thanks
