I couldn't see too clearly, watch these movies on my phone, but did you put direct short before the lights or only after them? Tesla's are on the base but yours were on the top.

Why weren't you electrocuted? I've had nasty shocks from even c2000v from imhotep ignition coil oscillator using quenched spark gap...
