The best place to start with watercolors would be to start to master the basics of the medium. You can buy her a book on watercolors. One of the important things to remember about Watercolors is what is referred to as the white space... In watercolors you don't paint with white paint, but the white or the negative space is actually space on the pater that is left blank white paper. There are masks you use to do that (rubber substance that rub off and keep the paint from sticking). The Transparent watercolors as Pamela uses need to stay transparent, so you don't build them up like other mediums, but let each shine... Although my father use to stick his paintings into the shower... LOL and then add a new layer... traditional watercolors are just a single layer! The best way to learn a new medium is to play with it!

Once you get the basics down, then you just move forward till you find your style. Mine has always been whimsical, but the goal is to get to the point where you discover that place where creativity reigns King! That is just being in the presence of your work, and the rest of the world disapears, and that is where your best work is done. She needs to find her favorite subject or make up one if she wants, but whatever she is painting she needs to love painting. I can and recently did paint and old 1940's crawler (a car built from all different parts and pieces from a junk yard... not even all the same makes or models), and it is well done and quite nice, but to be honest painting that was not like painting or illustrating my faeries! Whatever she is doing just make it her own and work on developing her style and she will love doing it!
